Mike and Brian McMenamin opened their first pub together in 1983. Now McMenamins hotels, restaurants, pubs, and even
a ballroom are spread throughout Oregon and Washington. McMenamins is known for its commitment to giving new life to
old buildings, and nine of its establishments are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Among those are Edgefield
SAIF Safety Management Consultant Dan Petrillo describes grip strength and wrist alignment at Misty Meadows in Bandon.
Developing a safety culture within your company is one of
Oregon has always been known for the quality of
the food it produces. The state’s berries, seafood,
beef, hops, and hazelnuts—to name a few—have
earned national acclaim. Now many businesses
throughout the state are using these ingredients
to create microbrews, candies, wines, cheeses,
and other distinctive foods and beverages, giving
Oregon a well-deserved reputation for good taste.
This year we are featuring a dozen of these SAIF
policyholders in our calendar, along with the dates
and locations of free employer trainings we have
scheduled for 2011.
It has been an honor for SAIF to be your workers’
compensation insurer during 2010. By working
together, we help keep all Oregon workers safe.
Wishing you continued success,
Sisters Coffee | SISTERS | www.sisterscoffee.com
Sisters Coffee started a little north of Oregon, in Sitka, Alaska, where Joy and Winfield Durham purchased their first two-pound
coffee roaster. In 1986, they sold their Alaska business, Coffee Express, and moved to Central Oregon, where Sisters Coffee was
born three years later. They roasted, packaged, and sold their coffee in a renovated, 600-square-foot cabin on Hood Street, which
they soon outgrew. Needing a larger place for the company—and for their customers—they constructed a new café and roasting
facility in 2005.
Lillie Belle Farms | CENTRAL POINT | www.lilliebellefarms.com
Jeff Shepherd was growing organic raspberries, marionberries, and strawberries on his two-acre farm near the entrance to
the Applegate Valley in southern Oregon when he decided to start making chocolates. Using the berries grown at Lillie Belle
Farms, Shepherd (husband of Belle, father of Lillie) began making truffles on his kitchen counter and selling them at local
farmers markets. They were a hit. Now, Lillie Belle’s handmade ganaches, bon bons, and truffles come in more than 80 flavors:
passion fruit caramel, marzipan fig, lavender caramel, boysenberry buttercup, coffee bean ganache, and smoky blue cheese,
just to name a few.
Willamette Valley Cheese Company | SALEM | www.wvcheeseco.com
The handmade, artisan cheeses of Willamette Valley Cheese Company all start with the milk from owner Rod Volbeda’s herd
of Jerseys. A second-generation dairy farmer, Volbeda believes that treating his herd well ensures the best milk for his gouda,
havarti, cheddar, brie, fontina, and other handmade, farmstead cheeses. After serving as an apprentice with Dutch cheese
masters, Volbeda returned to Salem where he worked at perfecting those classic European recipes and adding a few Oregon
twists of his own.
Country Natural Beef | VALE | www.countrynaturalbeef.com
In 1986, 14 ranch families came together with a vision of preserving their rural culture and connecting with their urban customers. These
families became the foundation for Country Natural Beef. Today, more than 100 ranching families in several western states raise beef under
that brand, all sharing a philosophy of sustainability that will ensure their way of life is available to future generations. Ranches that belong
to Country Natural Beef are certified for humane animal practices and environmentally sensitive land management by Food Alliance, a
Portland-based nonprofit organization that offers a comprehensive certification program for sustainably produced food. To help with the
urban-ranch connection, Country Natural Beef sponsored a Country Food Fair last year in Portland. Held downtown, the fair gave people a
chance to learn roping, try Country Natural Beef, and hear stories about ranch life.
Misty Meadows is a family-owned and operated business that started more than 30 years ago, when the Keller family began
selling jams and jellies from a roadside stand on Highway 101 south of Bandon. Although they have moved from the small
stand to a bigger store, Misty Meadows continues to sell its homemade jams and jellies, all made from the family’s original
recipes, along with fruit butters, syrups, and honeys. Except for citrus fruit, they use only Oregon-grown fruit, and they use
wild berries whenever possible.
Abacela | ROSEBURG | www.abacela.com
In the 1960s, Earl Jones developed a love for Tempranillo wines from Spain. He also began dreaming that he would someday
produce those wines himself. He discovered that southern Oregon had a climate similar to the region in Spain where those grapes
are grown. So, in the 1990s he quit his job as a physician-scientist-educator, and his wife, Hilda, quit hers as a medical technologist.
They purchased a 19th-century homestead in the Umpqua Valley and began to learn all they could about growing Tempranillo
grapes and making wine. Today, Abacela also grows Albarino, Syrah, Merlot, Dolcetto, Malbec, Grenache, and other grape varieties
that are carefully matched to the region’s unique microclimate.
GloryBee Foods | EUGENE | www.glorybeefoods.com
In 1975, working out of their garage, Dick and Pat Turanski planned to keep about 100 colonies of bees, sell the honey, and build
bee-keeping equipment. They named their new business Dick’s Bee Supplies and put a “Honey for sale” sign on the road in front
of their house. Within a few months, the growing company was renamed GloryBee Foods. Today it processes thousands of pounds
of honey every week and has expanded its product line to include royal jelly and bee pollen, other natural sweeteners, dried fruits
and nuts, as well as ingredients for making natural soaps and cosmetics.
Umpqua Aquaculture | WINCHESTER BAY | www.umpquaoysters.com
In the triangle formed by the two southern jetties at Winchester Bay, where the Umpqua River flows into the ocean, Umpqua
Aquaculture found the ideal fresh-water-to-salt-water ratio and cool climate for growing Umpqua Triangle Oysters. Hanging from
15-foot lengths of rope that form nearly two miles of oyster “curtains,” the oysters bob up and down with the tide over the course
of their two- to four-year growing cycle. This innovative long-line technique keeps the oysters from coming in contact with the
sediment at the bottom of the bay and produces a clean, firm meat.
Barhyte Specialty Foods | PENDLETON | www.barhyte.com
The foundation for Barhyte’s mustards, marinades, and dressings is the company’s original Sweet ’n Sour Mustard Sauce developed
by Jacobus Barhyte, a German immigrant who settled in New York in the 1700s. In the 1970s, a century after following the
Oregon Trail to Oregon, the family began sharing Jacobus’ original mustard recipe with the public at their Swift and Martin
Station Deli in Pendleton. In 2009, the company rebranded many of their products with the Saucy Mama ® label in honor of Suzie
Barhyte, who is the face of the company.
