Johann Heinrich Metzendorf (1807-1874)
First Generation
1. Johann Heinrich1 METZENDORF was born in Schlitz, Hessen, Germany on 21 July 1807.
Heinrich died on 25 March 1874 in Heppenheim, Starkenburg, Hessen, Germany, at 66 years of age.1
He married Sophie SCHADE circa 1832 in Schönberg, Hessen, Germany.2 Sophie was born on 22
December 1809 in Schönberg, Hessen, Germany. Sophie died on 18 April 1881 in Heppenheim, Starkenburg,
Hessen, Germany, at 71 years of age.3 According to his "Wanderbuch", Heinrich Metzendorf began his travels
from Schlitz on 16 March 1829. He went by way of Friedberg to Frankfurt and worked there until 12 April
1829. On the 13th of April he reported that he was in Darmstadt where he worked until 16 December 1830.
He apparantly went back to Schlitz, perhaps because it was winter and there was no work. On 19 February
1831 he began his travels again. It is assumed that he went directly back to Darmstadt. From there he must
have gone to Schoenberg; perhaps the Darmstadt registration was good for the entire province of Starkenberg.
In any event, by this time, he must already have met Sophie Schade in Schoenberg. On 8 May 1832 is an
entry for Darmstadt: "Worked here and conducted himself well". This was perhaps his notice of departure.
On 9 May 1832 his first son, Anton, was born in Schoenberg. The official marriage was on 30 June 1833.
Evidently he stayed after May in Schoenberg and worked in Heppenheim because of the sandstone to be found
there. An extract from the Citizens Register for Schoenberg notes that he was a citizen since April 1833. The
last entry in his "Wanderbuch", without location noted, but perhaps from Heppenheim, says "Heinrich
Metzendorf, as a stranger to the town, paid the legal entry fee with one 'Gulden'". In the Schoenberg Citizens
Register his entry is stricken with the remark: "Removed to Heppenheim in the year 1834". The date is not
definitely readable. The latest year would be 1836 when his son, Johann Heinrich, was born in Heppenheim.
Johann Heinrich METZENDORF and Sophie SCHADE had the following children:

4 iii. Johann ("John") Heinrich METZENDORF was born in Heppenheim, Starkenburg, Hessen,
Germany on 8 June 1836.4 Johann died after 1890 in USA. He was inducted into the military on
16 May 1861 in Washigton, D.C.. Johann worked as machinist. It was reported that nothing
further was heard of Johann Heinrich Metzendorf after he emigrated to the United States.
However, so reasonable evidence has been found for his presence in THE united States. A John
(i.e., "Johann") Metzendorf enlisted in Company C, 5th Inf. Regiment of New York on 16 May

1861 at Washington, D.C. at the age of 25. Since Johann Heinrich Metzendorf was born on 8
June 1836 this would seem to be the same person. A review of the roster of the 5th Regiment
indicates that practically all members were of German extraction. John Metzendorf was
mustered out in New York City on 7 August 1861. His Civil War pension file indicates that his
wive was Katherine and guardian was Frank Nuss. John Metzendorf is listed in the New York
City Directory of 1869 as a Machinist at 80 Elm Street with his home at 394 Second Avenue. A
William Metzendorf is also listed as "trimming" with home at 172 Delancey. This is perhaps his
brother Wilhelm who is said to have gone to America and then returned to Heppenheim, as there
is no later evidence of a William Metzendorf. Wilhelm Metzendorf was a glazier, so this could
explain the "trimming" description. Also, his first child was born in Germany in 1879, so he was
most likely in America in 1869. John is also listed in the 1890 Directory as a Machinist with
his home at 746 E. 170th Street. Interestingly, in the same directory, a Sophia Metzendorf is
listed with her home at 394 Second Avenue, John Metzendorf's former address in 1869. No
further information has thus far been found on John ("Johann") Metzendorf, but a review of his
Civil War pension file should produce further details.

2. Anton2 METZENDORF (Johann Heinrich1) was born in Schönberg, Hessen, Germany on 9 May
1832.6 Anton died circa 1900 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.
He married Catherine EMMERICH about 1858 in Germany. Catherine was born about 1832 in
Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany.7 Catherine died after 1880. She was listed on 8 June 1880 in the Federal
census in Town of New Lots, Kings County, New York, as Anton's wife, age 48.8
On 8 June 1880 the Federal census listed Anton as head of household in Town of New Lots, Kings
County, New York, age 48, living on Centre St.9 Anton worked as a Gas Inspector.10
Anton METZENDORF and Catherine EMMERICH had the following children:

deceased. He was listed on 8 June 1880 in the Federal census in Town of New Lots, Kings
County, New York, as Anton's son, age 21.12
11 ii. Catherine (Kate) METZENDORF < was born in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York about
1861.13 Catherine died after January 1920. She was listed on 8 June 1880 in the Federal census
in Town of New Lots, Kings County, New York, as Anton's daughter, age 19.14 On 30 January
1920 the Federal census listed Catherine as head of household in Woodhaven, Queens County
(New York City), New York, 8717 75th St(Eads Ave), age 58.15
12 iii. Frank METZENDORF < was born in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York about 1863.16 Frank
is deceased. He was listed on 8 June 1880 in the Federal census in Town of New Lots, Kings
County, New York, as Anton's son, age 17.17

14 v. Charles METZENDORF < was born in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York about 1874.18
Charles died after January 1920. He was listed on 8 June 1880 in the Federal census in Town of
New Lots, Kings County, New York, as Anton's son, age 6.19 In January 1920 Charles was a
Clerk of the County Court in Queens County, (New York City), New York.20 He was listed on
30 January 1920 in the Federal Census census in Woodhaven, Queens County (New York City),
New York, age 45, living with his sister.21
3. Maria2 METZENDORF (Johann Heinrich1) was born in Schönberg, Hessen, Germany on 5 March
1834. Maria died on 5 May 1901 in Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany, at 67 years of age.

was born circa 1830 in Lautern, Hessen, Germany. Friedrich died on 29 October 1886 in Darmstadt, Hessen,
Germany, at 56 years of age. Friedrich was employed at a"Schirmfabrik", as a owner/operator in Darmstadt,
Hessen, Germany circa 1870. He used 'Wilhelm' as his name.

William's wife, age 23.32
He was listed on 8 June 1880 in the Federal census in Town of New Lots, Kings County, New York, as
Anton's son, age 12.33 On 8 June 1900 the Federal census listed William as head of household in Brooklyn,
Kings County, New York, age 31, at 122 Norwood Ave.34 In June 1900 William was a Lithographer in
Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.35

He was christened on 11 June 1867 Evangelical City Parrish, Darmstadt in Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany.
Wilhelm was an Accountant with the Fletcher Trust Company in Indianapolis, Marion County, IN. Wilhelm
Keller came to the United States at the age of 19 to avoid being drafted into the German Army. He initially
went to Brooklyn, New York where his uncle, Anton Metzendorf, lived with his family. He is reported to have
taken a trip to Phoenix, Arizona in the late 1880's. This may have been to visit his uncle Johann Heinrich
Metzendorf who had also emigrated to the USA. In any event, he returned east and settled in Indianapolis,
Indiana where he remained until his death. He returned only one time to Germany for a vacation with his
family during the summer of 1909. He initially worked in Indianapolis as a bookkeeper at the Indianapolis
Brewing Company. He later was an accountant at the Fletcher Trust Company where he remained for many
years until his retirement. Although he and his first wife, Ida Davis, were Protestant, he became Catholic
when he married Josephine Szlepeski. His first son, William, was Protestant while the others - Francis, John,
and Edward - were raised as Catholics. He used the name 'William' after emigrating to the United States.

the Army and served in France as a Corporal with the 151st Field Artillery of the Rainbow Division. After the
war he became a salesman with the Republic Creosote Company, but lost this position during the Depression.
He subsequently proposed and was assigned a position to establish the first vehicle maintenance garage for the
Indiana State Police. He was Superintendent of Maintenance for the State Police at their facility near Fountain
Square on the south side of Indianapolis until 1940.
In the 1920's he had joined the Indiana National Guard and received a commission (O-276579) and, in
1940, was called to active duty as a Captain in the Quartermaster Corps of the Indiana 39th Division. After
the outbreak of the Second World War he remained in the Quartermaster Corps, but was assigned with the
Army Air Corps. He was assigned to Brookley Field, Mobile, Alabama until mid-1942 when he was
reassigned as Post Quartermaster at Patterson Field, Ohio. He subsequently was promoted to Major and
Lieutenant Colonel and assigned to the Air Service Command (now the Air Force Materiel Command). In
1944 he was transferred to the Pacific Theatre with the Far East Air Service Command where he served in
Hollandia, New Guinea; Biak; the Philippines; and Okinawa. He returned to the United States in late 1945
after the conclusion of the war. He left the Army at that time and returned to Indianapolis. However, in 1946
he returned to active duty as a Lieutenant Colonel and was briefly assigned to the Brooklyn Army Base in New
York. In 1947 he was transferred to Fort Mason, San Fransisco where he was Chief of Graves Registrations
Division which was responsible for the return of American war dead from the Pacific. In 1949 he was
transferred to Marburg, Germany as Commander of the Quartermaster Reclamation Depot where he remained
until 1952. He was transferred to the Oakland Army Depot in 1952 and purchased a house in San Mateo,
California. He was assigned at Oakland Army Base until being transferred to Korea in 1955. Although a
Lieutenant Colonel on active duty, he was a Colonel in the Army Reserve. Having served 20 years active duty
and 10 years in the reserve, he retired as a Colonel in 1957. He remained in San Mateo, California until two
years befor his death when he and his wife, Lucile, moved to Southern California where their son and daughter
lived.
