in<strong>to</strong> a *' wedge " without disarranging the first order, with other particulars.<br />

Bk. V. On drawing correctly with the compass places, districts,<br />

<strong>and</strong> also the plans <strong>of</strong> cities, with the manner <strong>of</strong> making the said compass in<br />

two ways ; which science by P<strong>to</strong>lemy is called Choregraphy. Bk. VI. On<br />

the manner <strong>of</strong> fortifying cities in these days, so as <strong>to</strong> withst<strong>and</strong> the heavy<br />

blows <strong>of</strong> artillery by the strength <strong>of</strong> the outline, with other ingenious particulars,<br />

never till now heard <strong>of</strong> or even thought <strong>of</strong>. Tartaglia's first work, the<br />

"Nuova Scientia," <strong>of</strong> which the "Quesiti" is an enlargement, is in three Bks.<br />

[V. 658] ; the headings <strong>of</strong> two more appear in the Table <strong>of</strong> Contents, but<br />

these were never published : Bk, I. On falling bodies <strong>and</strong> projectiles. Bk. II.<br />

On the flight <strong>of</strong> projectiles. Bk. III. On the measurements <strong>of</strong> heights <strong>and</strong><br />

distances.<br />

Bk. IV. was <strong>to</strong> be on the laying <strong>of</strong> guns, <strong>and</strong> Bk. V. on Fireworks.<br />
