<strong>to</strong> a battle. Leo VI. may be said <strong>to</strong> have built <strong>up</strong> his work on this ; he has<br />

borrowed the whole <strong>of</strong> Bk. II. First printed by Scheffer, with Arrian's<br />

*'Tadics", Upsalias, 1664, 8**, Greek <strong>and</strong> Latin.<br />

Leo VI., Emperor <strong>of</strong> the East (a.d. 866-912), wrote a famous book on<br />

tadics. He has been accused by Guischardt <strong>of</strong> borrowing from Onos<strong>and</strong>er<br />

without acknowledgment,* <strong>and</strong>, by a transla<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Vegetius, <strong>of</strong> copying from<br />

Julius Africanus ; <strong>and</strong> there is no denying that he <strong>to</strong>ok extensively from the<br />

" Strategica " <strong>of</strong> Maurice.^ Leo's work is, however, <strong>of</strong> the greatest value<br />

his explanations, especially concerning battle formations, are well given, <strong>and</strong><br />

on this point he has s<strong>up</strong>plied us with information <strong>to</strong> be met with in no other<br />

CoNSTANTiNE VII. (a.d. 9i5-959)> son <strong>of</strong> Leo VI., is s<strong>up</strong>posed about<br />

A.D. 951 <strong>to</strong> have re-edited one <strong>of</strong> his father's treatises. His own treatise,<br />

entitled "Iltpt Qt[Axruv*\ was printed Leyden, 1588, 8**; Paris, 1609, 8";<br />

<strong>and</strong> by B<strong>and</strong>uri, Paris, 171 1, <strong>and</strong> Venice, 1729, fols. All have Latin<br />

translations.<br />

Hero the Younger (circa a.d. 950), also called Mechanicus, or <strong>of</strong><br />

Byzantium, made a compilation on machines <strong>of</strong> war from the writings <strong>of</strong><br />

Athenaeus, Bi<strong>to</strong>, Hero the Elder, <strong>and</strong> ApoUodorus. It is in two parts, (i)<br />

On preparations for a defence,<br />

<strong>and</strong> (2) Examples from his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>to</strong> illustrate<br />

the first part, taken from Polybius, Arrian, Josephus, <strong>and</strong> others.<br />

The first<br />

part is <strong>of</strong> particular value, being derived from the lost writings <strong>of</strong> ^neas<br />

<strong>and</strong> Philo. First printed in a Latin translation by Barozzi, Venice, 1572,<br />

4**; afterwards by Thevenot <strong>and</strong> by Wescher, <strong>and</strong> in Harles' edition <strong>of</strong><br />

Nicephorus Phocas, afterwards Emperor <strong>of</strong> the East (reigning a.d.<br />

963-969), wrote a treatise, " Tltpi napa^po/x») IIoXejuov" (De VelitationeBellica),<br />

on Outposts <strong>and</strong> Frontier operations mainly in Asia Minor. Printed for the<br />
