ViTRuvius, PoLLio (b. ctrca b.c. 80), was personally known <strong>to</strong> Julius<br />

Csesar, after whose death he was befriended by Augustus, on account <strong>of</strong> the<br />

services he had rendered the state as a <strong>military</strong> engineer. Vitruvius commences<br />

his account <strong>of</strong> machines <strong>of</strong> war in<br />

Bk. X., chap, xv., <strong>of</strong> the " Architedura<br />

" with a description <strong>of</strong> scorpions <strong>and</strong> catapults ;<br />

the contents <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Onos<strong>and</strong>er, the Pla<strong>to</strong>nic (circa ist cent, after Christ), wrote on the<br />

Apollodorus <strong>of</strong> Damascus (b. circa a.d. 60), a celebrated archited<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>military</strong> engineer, dedicated his treatise on " Machines <strong>of</strong> War " <strong>to</strong> the<br />

Emperor Trajan. Published by Thevenot <strong>and</strong> by Wescher.<br />

Frontinus, Sextus Julius (circa a.d. 40-103), besides the "Stratagems<br />

" (see No. 3), wrote another work on the <strong>military</strong> art, mentioned by<br />

himself <strong>and</strong> also by ^lian (chap, i.), which is now lost.<br />

iELiANus Tacticus (circa a.d. 100). See No. 88, <strong>and</strong> for editions<br />

with Vegetius, Frontinus, <strong>and</strong> Modestus, see No. 3.<br />

Hadrian (a.d. 76-138). Vegetius speaks <strong>of</strong> the " Constitutiones ", or<br />

laws relating <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>military</strong> affairs, <strong>of</strong> Hadrian, placing them side by side with<br />

those <strong>of</strong> Augustus <strong>and</strong> Trajan, but it is now generally admitted that these<br />

" Constitutiones " are not the work <strong>of</strong> Hadrian.^ Tillemont* remarks that<br />
