he phrases it, which are in reality merely trivial ;<br />

a third adorns his<br />

ill-arranged compilation with the title <strong>of</strong> ' discoveries,* ' new<br />

methods,' etc.;" such claims having far less justification than<br />

Aconzio's ^ <strong>and</strong> Zanchi's, when they claim <strong>to</strong> be the first <strong>to</strong> write<br />

on fortification. Other titles, again, give not the slightest clue <strong>to</strong><br />

the text, a remark which applies with special force <strong>to</strong> Barnaby<br />

Rich's "Farewell <strong>to</strong> Militarie Pr<strong>of</strong>ession",^ a colledlion <strong>of</strong> short<br />

s<strong>to</strong>ries translated from the Italian ;<br />

<strong>to</strong> the " Specchio di Guerra "^ <strong>of</strong><br />

Francesco Panigarola, Bishop <strong>of</strong> Asti, a religious treatise ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />

the " Bibliotheca Militum",* a satire against the Puritan army.<br />

However, they are, as a rule, sufficiently accurate <strong>to</strong> make an<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> the contents unnecessary.<br />

Copies was <strong>of</strong> the greatest service. Both the compiler <strong>and</strong> the<br />

edi<strong>to</strong>r join in acknowledging the unfailing attention <strong>and</strong> courtesy<br />
