Excellence," probably Maurice <strong>of</strong> Nassau. The writer had sent with it<br />

another from Essex <strong>to</strong> himself.<br />

The original, written by the author's own h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> two copies transcribed<br />

from it, reposed in the libraries <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Clare, the Earl <strong>of</strong> Westmorel<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> Lord Fairfax, his sons-in-law, while another copy was in Major-<br />

General Skippon's possession ; all had been examined by Dillingham, the<br />

edi<strong>to</strong>r. The author, who was one <strong>of</strong> the most successful <strong>of</strong> Elizabeth's<br />

generals, relates his own experiences <strong>of</strong> the wars in the Low Countries from<br />

1589 <strong>to</strong> the middle <strong>of</strong> 1601, breaking <strong>of</strong>f very suddenly during the account<br />

<strong>of</strong> the siege <strong>of</strong> Ostend. Dillingham has continued the s<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> the siege,<br />

adding two narratives <strong>of</strong> the battle <strong>of</strong> Newport—one written some time<br />

before, in Latin, " by an elegant <strong>and</strong> learned pen," the other by Sir John<br />

Ogle, Vere's *' lieutenant "—<strong>and</strong> introducing a quotation from Edmonds*<br />

" Caesar," where one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
