service. The later editions were called for by the troubles in the author's<br />

native l<strong>and</strong>. Hexham had translated the First Part in<strong>to</strong> Dutch, <strong>and</strong> intended<br />

<strong>to</strong> do the same by the other parts. His long experience <strong>of</strong> warfare, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

careful seledlion <strong>of</strong> extracts from the best <strong>military</strong> writers <strong>of</strong> his time have<br />

contributed <strong>to</strong> render this series [Nos. 136, 137, 163, 164] extremely valuable.<br />

His literary labours ceased in 1643, with the preparation for the press<br />

<strong>of</strong> an edition <strong>of</strong> " The Appendix <strong>of</strong> the Lawes, etc." He records as a somewhat<br />

remarkable circumstance that, though he had served as a soldier for<br />

forty-two years, <strong>and</strong> had been present in many hot engagements, yet the<br />

enemy had never drawn one drop <strong>of</strong> blood from him.<br />
