Contents. This work enjoyed a great reputation during the seventeenth<br />

century} <strong>and</strong> the "Observations" have been added <strong>to</strong> the beautiful 1695<br />

edition <strong>of</strong> Clement Edmonds' "Caesar." In the section entitled "The<br />

an extremely brief <strong>and</strong> vague chapter<br />

Militarie Discipline <strong>of</strong> the Romans " is<br />

on the pay <strong>of</strong> Roman soldiers. Sir Henry Savile, writing forty years before,<br />

in a letter <strong>to</strong> Burleigh, dated 1595 (printed in the Somers Tradts, Vol. I.),<br />

has entered fully in<strong>to</strong> the subjedt, reducing the Roman coins <strong>to</strong> the <strong>English</strong><br />

equivalent <strong>of</strong> his time. [V. Orig. 645.]<br />

According <strong>to</strong> Karcher, de Rohan wrote a " Traite sur la guerre des<br />

montagnes", wherein he maintains the principle, afterwards adopted by<br />

Napoleon "<br />

Contents. A copy was given <strong>to</strong> every Colonel <strong>and</strong> Captain joining the<br />

army under Northumberl<strong>and</strong>. After the assembly <strong>of</strong> the whole force the<br />

regulations were read out distindlly by the Marshals <strong>of</strong> the Regiments, in the<br />

presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>and</strong> men. Every week, on pay-day, they were again<br />

read over <strong>to</strong> each company by the Captain, who also read them at every<br />

main-guard. The oath exafted <strong>of</strong> each man on taking service, is given on<br />
