Contents. Babing<strong>to</strong>n describes a fire-work that ** may serve as well for<br />

service in war as for pleasure or triumph ", which in its efFedl may be regarded<br />

as a pro<strong>to</strong>type <strong>of</strong> our shrapnel shell. It consisted <strong>of</strong> a ball, twelve inches in<br />

diameter, hollowed <strong>to</strong> receive the charge, <strong>and</strong> having holes radiating from<br />

the concavity <strong>to</strong> the surface for the insertion <strong>of</strong> cylindrical chambers, each<br />

<strong>to</strong> contain a bullet. It was fired from a mortar.<br />
