Contents. So late in the seventeenth century it is somewhat surprising <strong>to</strong><br />

find a writer <strong>of</strong> Markham's reputation advocating that the trained b<strong>and</strong>s<br />

should be s<strong>up</strong>plemented by corps <strong>of</strong> bowmen, " who would doubtless cause<br />

fear <strong>and</strong> amazement <strong>to</strong> all those that durst attempt an invasion." Not that<br />

he would underrate<br />

other weapons, but that such auxiliaries could be armed<br />

at little cost, <strong>and</strong> trained without inconvenience.<br />
