This revised <strong>and</strong> enlarged ed. is <strong>to</strong> be found in the volume <strong>of</strong> Woodall's<br />

colle6led works, entitled " The Surgeons Mate or Military <strong>and</strong> Domestique<br />

Surgery." It contains additional chapters on " Cataplasms" <strong>and</strong> "Trepanning,"<br />

with a plate showing the various instruments used in the latter<br />

operation.<br />

On the breaking out <strong>of</strong> the Civil Wars Charles I. comm<strong>and</strong>ed<br />

the Company <strong>of</strong> Barber-Surgeons <strong>to</strong> send, for his special service, the sixteen<br />

<strong>of</strong> their number who were most expert in the healing <strong>of</strong> gunshot wounds.<br />

Each was paid at the rate <strong>of</strong> 2s. yd. a day, <strong>and</strong> was s<strong>up</strong>plied with a " Surgeons<br />
