Contents. The initials are those <strong>of</strong> the transla<strong>to</strong>r. The author was an<br />

Italian <strong>and</strong> a Roman Catholic, from whom the denial <strong>of</strong> absolution by their<br />

confessors <strong>to</strong> certain Italian gentlemen who had served the States in the wars<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Low Countries called forth this remonstrance. " His name," says the<br />

transla<strong>to</strong>r, " (as his owne silence bids me) shall not by any Curiosities or<br />

Conie£lures <strong>of</strong> mine be raked in<strong>to</strong>. It appears that he was desirous <strong>to</strong> do<br />

good, not ambitious <strong>to</strong> receive honour." A natural regard for his own safety<br />

was, however, probably at the root <strong>of</strong> this desire for secrecy <strong>of</strong> the author,<br />

who has not hesitated <strong>to</strong> criticise freely the instru(9.ions from Rome that<br />

authorized the a6lion <strong>of</strong> the confessors.<br />
