Contents. The author, who had served in the Netherl<strong>and</strong>s under Alva,<br />
gives a clear <strong>and</strong> succinft account <strong>of</strong> that general's system.<br />
In an interesting<br />
passage on cavalry, he pronounces for the lance against the pis<strong>to</strong>l, <strong>and</strong><br />
describes the manner <strong>of</strong> h<strong>and</strong>ling the former arm. Mendoza was the inven<strong>to</strong>r<br />
<strong>of</strong> a piece <strong>of</strong> artillery made <strong>of</strong> metal, firing a shot <strong>of</strong> one pound weight,<br />
which, he says, would pierce a two-foot wall ; but neither the range nor<br />
charge is given. Pp. 82-147 ^^^ °" sieges; pp. 148-165 on naval matters.<br />
There is another trans, amongst the MS. Harl. (4138).<br />
Bernardino de Mendoza was the son <strong>of</strong> Don Alonso, third Count <strong>of</strong><br />
Coruna. The date <strong>of</strong> his birth is uncertain, but there is no doubt he was<br />
living all through the long reign <strong>of</strong> Philip II. In 1574 he became Ambassador<br />
<strong>to</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>, but in<br />
1584 was sent out <strong>of</strong> the country, "on account <strong>of</strong><br />
his pradlises."^ In 1 591, after thirty years <strong>of</strong> almost continuous service,<br />
having become <strong>to</strong>tally blind, he retired <strong>to</strong> the Monastery <strong>of</strong> San Bernardo in<br />
Madrid ; here "the loss <strong>of</strong> his sight preventing him being other than a<br />
mute Councillor," he wrote the " T6orica y Pratica de Guerra " for the use<br />
<strong>of</strong> Philip, Prince <strong>of</strong> the Asturias, afterwards Philip III. Sir Edward Hoby<br />
(1560-16 1 7) was the gr<strong>and</strong>son <strong>of</strong> the Sir Philip Hoby who had held many<br />
