Contents. Written in the Low Countries. Returning <strong>to</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>,<br />
Garrard, shortly before his death, sent the MS. <strong>to</strong> his near kinsman. Sir<br />
Thomas Garrard, the writer <strong>of</strong> the Dedication, by whom it was passed on<br />
<strong>to</strong> Hitchcock. The work consists almost entirely <strong>of</strong> extrafts from some <strong>of</strong><br />
the best known <strong>military</strong> writers <strong>of</strong> the day, <strong>and</strong> is not, as the title would<br />
lead one <strong>to</strong> s<strong>up</strong>pose, written mainly from practical experience. It is in six<br />
parts : Bk. I. On the private <strong>and</strong> corporal, <strong>to</strong>gether with the martial laws<br />
<strong>of</strong> the field <strong>and</strong> other necessary matters. Bk. II. On Sergeants, Ensign<br />
Bearers, Lieutenants <strong>and</strong> Gentlemen <strong>of</strong> the B<strong>and</strong>. How <strong>to</strong> train, skirmish<br />
<strong>and</strong> discover (pp. 56-138). Bk. III. Observations on the government <strong>of</strong><br />
b<strong>and</strong>s, squadrons, <strong>and</strong> battles j on Captains, Colonels <strong>and</strong> Sergeant-Majors<br />
General (pp. 1 39-224). Bk. IV. On the duties <strong>of</strong> the " General <strong>of</strong> Horsemen,"<br />
