Contents. These ordinances prove the almost incredible licence prevailing<br />

in foreign armies <strong>of</strong> the period. They w^ere issued by Henry IV. <strong>of</strong> France<br />

on account <strong>of</strong> the complaints made " <strong>of</strong> the infinite oppression " <strong>of</strong> the<br />

peasantry by "men <strong>of</strong> vs^ar," <strong>and</strong> are intended for the governance <strong>of</strong> troops<br />

in time <strong>of</strong> peace. Translated by Edward Aggas, the stationer.<br />
