Looking Back (& Forward!) as FY2013 ends...
In the past year at 58 Barre Street, we’ve completed a successful
Capital Campaign, moved into our renovated facility and begun furnishing
it, created a Resource Room, expanded and equipped the commercial kitchen,
and established a new audio-visual system. We’ve seen our membership
grow from 700 to well over 800 people --75% from Montpelier. We’ve
continued core programming such as Living Strong, Yoga, Painting,
Rughooking and foreign languages, and we’ve added new classes such as
Zumba, Facebook, and workshops with a Pool Pro.
We’ve continued community partnerships including First in Fitness,
Twin City Lanes, CVCOA, CVHHH, and AARP Tax Clinic, and we’ve developed
new partnerships including with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute,
Americorps Neighbor to Neighbor, and Just Basics, Inc. We’ve hosted
many special events, including the MSAC Thanksgiving/Volunteer Appreciation
Luncheon, Voices of Montpelier Oral History Project, Life Map Project
with MCO, Bridge Community Dinner, numerous community music
and dance events, Art Walk, Holiday Bazaar, Spring Rummage Sale, and a
MSAC “Successful Life Changes for Seniors” 5-panel series.
As we end this fiscal year, I thank all the members, volunteers, instructors,
staff, donors, community friends and partners who enrich MSAC
with your time, contributions and involvement. A special thank you to
Susie Gomez who retired after 15 years of dedicated service and to Johanna
Nichols for her attention to detail, perseverance, and patience. I’m honored
to work here and look forward to getting acquainted with more of you in the
coming year, to starting our new meals programming, and to promoting our
mission (see back cover).
A collection of Art work by Sylvia Walker will be on display at MSAC from the
middle of June through July. Sylvia paints in oils, pastels, water-colors and pen &
ink. Most are landscapes of local Vermont scenes. Sylvia has taught art at MSAC for 16
years and has volunteered countless additional hours of service to MSAC as well.
ART WALK featuring Jan Ghiringhelli’s work
Friday, June 7th, 4-7pm
"Recent Works", an exhibit of mostly plein air paintings of landscapes done
in oil and pastel by the award winning Central Vermont artist. Snacks.
From Jan Ghiringhelli: “My goals are simple. I just want to paint what I enjoy
while always looking to improve myself. I also use a reminder to myself—my
vision is unique and I don’t need to paint like anyone else. . . . To
paint plein air helps preserve what is in the now for the future. It is tremendous
joy to be outside in the fresh air enjoying the whole of the moment.”
Hillside Birches, oil
MSAC & DHARMA FILM SERIES
Sat. June 8th, 6:30 pm!
Of Gods And Men 2010, 120
minutes
A group of French Trappist
monks making their home in
the Algerian mountains have
ample reason to believe they're
in danger. But their assumption
that there can be common
ground between Islam and
Christianity leads them to remain
at the monastery. Based
on a true story.
Suggested donation $3. For comfort,
bring a cushion.
POETRY READING & BOOK
SIGNING, Tues. June 11, 1:00
Sherry Olson will read from her new
collection of poems, Four-Way Stop
(Fomite Press, 2013). Sherry teaches the
Write a Poem class at the Senior Center.
The poet, Linda McCarriston, said of Sherry’s
new collection: “Sherry Olson’s poems
have the authority of a life lived to its core,
yielding wisdom from even the most local
of events and relationships. Every one of
her poems is an encounter with someone or
something that is opened by her attention.
These are poems people will not just like,
but will love.” Come for lunch first
(reserve by June 6th) and stay for this event!
Funny moment. . . A member walked in to the front office and said, “I have
something to ask you” and paused, then said “wait, wait, don’t tell me!” Upon
which, we both burst out laughing.
Johanna

MSAC Financial Announcements: Increases in dues, fees, instructor pay
After careful financial analysis of the past year’s programming revenue and expenditures, and looking ahead to
the budget for FY14, we are implementing increases in some member dues, class fees, and instructor pay, effective
June 3rd for paying dues and fees for July start, and effective July 1 for pay increases. A complete spreadsheet
of changes may be found on the bulletin board and website. Summary:
Dues for “Other Towns” $10 increase (no increase for Montpelier and Supporting Towns dues)
Class fees for Montpelier: $2 increase for shorter classes; $3 increase for longer classes
Class fees for Other towns: $4 increase for shorter classes; $5 increase for longer classes
Lap swimming: Montpelier $10 increase; Other towns $10 decrease (based on recalculation of actual cost)
Water aerobics, Tennis, Gym monthly and bowling: $0 to $10 increase — see fees for details.
Paid instructor hourly rate increase of 10%.
Your Advisory Board members discussed and approved the increases at the May 22 nd meeting, and City Council
reviewed them as well. We considered the following goals during the process:
Continue to promote the MSAC mission for a growing number and diversity of members
Maintain variety and affordability of options for members.
Respond to feedback and trends, including suggestions for increases and increased use of financial aid.
Comply with city policy re: equitable payment for services provided to non-Montpelier residents.
Normalize gaps between in and out of town member fees for off-site activities.

6
Raise hourly pay for paid contract instructors for the first time in many years.
Reduce overall subsidization to save up to $10K annually, enabling payment of certain unbudgeted but now
anticipated expenses while maintaining breadth of class offerings.
FY2013 has been a challenging year for MSAC financially while adapting to the new facility and managing expenses
both budgeted and unbudgeted. The municipal budget process requires us to write the budget in November,
a full 8 months before the start of the fiscal year, and we operate with many unpredictable and inconsistent
variables. Many members are surprised to learn that we subsidize nearly all programming above what members
pay individually for activities, classes, and trips.
Changes that we made in FY2013 allowed us to significantly increase the number of overall registrations and revenues,
while still lowering expenses overall. If any member would like to see detailed figures about individual
classes, summaries of trends, or anticipated FY14 revenue/expenses, please see Janna in the office or send her an
email. And PLEASE PAY YOUR DUES AND CLASS FEES IN JUNE; IT WILL HELP OUR
FY2013 BOTTOM LINE! PLEASE FILL OUT YOUR DUES RENEWAL FORM Pgs 7&8.
Registering during June is also important because it increases our revenue this year AND allows us to know
which classes will reach critical mass and which, if any, may need to be cancelled before the first week of classes
in July.
Learn to Rug Hook or Improve Your Skills. Raffle to benefit MSAC. This
is your chance! Pam Finnigan is donating three 2-hour private lessons anytime in the next six months, a
pattern, hooking tool & hoop, 100% wool material. Only 200 tickets will be sold. Tickets are $5. Available
at MSAC. Great gift for yourself or to give to someone! Inquire to help sell tickets, too!
MSAC is hiring! Senior Center Outreach/Media Assistant, Part-time
Note: Membership is renewed annually in June/July (or later) upon receipt of your annual dues*.
Dues for July 2013-June 2014: Montpelier residents: $10; Supporting Towns: $30: Other towns: $50.
Supporting Towns for FY14: Berlin, Calais, E. Montpelier, Middlesex and Worcester. These towns collectively
appropriated $7800 to MSAC at Town Meeting in March 2013, to supplement the $157K appropriation from
City of Montpelier tax-payers. Members from these towns enjoy lower dues and may register one week before
members from Other towns during class registration time. Dues are a vital part of MSAC’s revenue. Renewing
SPRING RUMMAGE SALE EXCEEDS GOAL!
Thanks to the many members & friends who donated and bought items!
When Veronica Frostick agreed to coordinate the rummage sale, she turned to Irene Nettler
for advice and then set out to accomplish the tasks ahead. With her organization and dedication, we
exceeded the goal and raised almost $2,400! Veronica—whoo hoo!
As soon as donations started arriving, Veronica and many volunteers set to work sorting, organizing,
arranging, and pricing in preparation for the two-day sale, May 17 & 18th. All week, they
worked from the opening to the closing of the Center, as more donations arrived. Staff enjoyed the
company and laughter of volunteers who came every day: Elaine Sumner, Joan Barrett, Rebecca
Sheppard, Brenda Snetsinger. Staffing the boutique were Barbara Smith, Bev Gaboriault, and Barbara
Gutheil. Pricing expert Stan Sumner created sale signs. Bob Barrett and Tom Frostick set up
and broke down tables (10 borrowed from the Recreation Dept).
The days of the sale arrived with an amazing troop of volunteers: Sally DiCicco, Elaine
Cohen, Maria Withey, Donna Flauto, Marian Lane, Ella May Speer, Jill Macdonald, Janice Dunn,
Carol Sweeney, Linda Workman, Barbara Arley, Peter Harris, and Ruth Ann Stone. Linda Normandeau,
Bill Doelger & Tom Frostick did the hauling. Pam Finnigan and members of the class demonstrated
rug hooking. Pam, Sue Day, Susan Torchia, & Mary Alice Bisbee sold raffle tickets for private
rug hooking lessons. Dona & Ed Koenemann and Bev Garboriault were super cashiers (thanks
from Johanna who prepared the deposit)! Hope you found a treasure—a great bargain!
Capital Area Neighborhood (CAN) Leaders Wanted
The city's Capital Area Neighborhoods organization was formed as an emergency management strategy back in
2008 when fuel prices rose dramatically. The changing economy made it clear to the city that we needed to increase
our efforts to make sure residents had access to needed services. We didn't want people to feel like they were having
to choose between heating and eating.
Since that time, CAN has held gatherings in city neighborhoods to get people together for events and activities that
build community and connect neighbors. We have publicized things like the current Montpelier Energy Challenge -
to encourage people to get energy audits and increase the energy efficiency of their homes.
Next year, CAN will be involved in a statewide emergency preparedness drill, to test our ability to communicate
with residents during an emergency with the help of CAN leaders. All the neighborhoods in town need a volunteerto
help with their area. Several areas do not have leaders, and other places could use more help.
If you're interested in joining the CAN leadership team, please contact Gwendolyn Hallsmith at the city planning
office - ghallsmith@montpelier-vt.org or 802-262-6269. CAN meetings are the 3rd Monday of the month at 5:30 in
the Police Community Room. Join us there to meet other leaders and learning what is involved.
