children & FAMILIES The Quarries of Chapin Forest Ages 12 and older (younger than 18 with an adult), FREE Step back in time and explore the two stone quarries of Chapin Forest that spanned two centuries of Kirtland history. The three-mile hike will be partially off-trail and challenging. Instructor: Naturalist Staff, min 8, max 20 Sat., Sept. 28, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Chapin Forest Reservation—QUAR PADDLE THE PARKS Paddle through our various parks along the Grand River and shoreline of Lake Erie, section by section. The paddle starts below the Harpersfield Dam in April and ends at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park in September. Paddle 4 of 5 sections and receive a shirt. Paddle the Parks 301: Section 6 (Grand River Paddle) Ages 16 and older, Fee: $20 with boat rental, $10 without rental This is the last section in a series of guided paddles through our parks. This trip will guide paddlers along the Grand River. Location will be determined by the level of the river. Instructor: Recreation Staff, min 6, max 16 Sat., Sept. 7, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Location TBD BICYCLING PROGRAMS ANSI/Snell approved bicycle helmets required on all rides. If you need a helmet, please reserve one when you register. Le Tour De Parks Compete in as many stages (Lake Metroparks programs) as you can to earn a free t-shirt! Earn a free ride by acting as support driver on another ride or by providing a friend or spouse! Countryside Grape Bike Ride Ages 16 and older, Fee: $10 Spend an early fall morning riding your bicycle through Ohio’s wine country. At the end of the ride, we’ll meet for lunch at Chalet Debonné. Total mileage is 30 to 40 miles on flat to hilly terrain. Instructor: Leigh Garam, min 10, max 60 Sun., Sept. 8, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Chalet Debonné Thursday Evening Social Bike Rides Ages 12 and older, Fee: $5 This is social riding and fun for everyone. These rides will be approximately ten miles each. Helmets are required. Mainly road surface riding. Instructor: Leigh Garam, min 10, max 30 Thurs., Sept. 19, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park Thurs., Oct. 3, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Environmental Learning Center Shaker Lakes Fall Tour Ride Ages 16 and older, Fee: $10 with dish to share, $15 without dish Tour historic Shaker Lakes by bicycle. Visit the lakes and the square. See historic homes as you stretch your legs on the way to Pepper Pike. Ride is 20 to 30 miles on flat to rolling hills. Potluck lunch. Instructor: Leigh Garam, min 10, max 40 Sun., Sept. 22, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Horseshoe Lake Park Chili Poker Run Bike Ride Ages 16 and older, Fee: $10 with dish to share, $15 without dish Come out for the last bike ride of the season and enjoy the colors of autumn. Along the way collect cards and see who has the best poker hand. Chili will be provided; bring a dish to share. Discover cider making and investigate how apples are grown, sample apple cider and learn about different varieties of apples. Boy Scout Merit Badges Ages 11 to 18, Fee: $12 Earn your merit badges with the help of Lake Metroparks. Badges range from nature and environmental science to rowing and small boat sailing. We will cover most requirements.
