Education in the Parks
by Rich Benz, Education Consultant
Lake Metroparks Education programs are
engaging, exciting and fun! We offer hands-on learning
adventures that focus on science concepts, farming, nature,
wildlife and outdoor education/recreation experiences and
incorporate cooperative group learning for schools across
Northeast Ohio. Lake Metroparks connects with schools in
all areas of the school curriculum from preschool through
high school in subject areas that include science, social
studies, mathematics, physical education, language arts and
fine arts. All programs are aligned with the most up-to-date
academic content standards in all subject areas. We have
also made a commitment to aligning programs to meet The
Ohio Department of Education’s STEM standards (STEM:
Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics). Lake
Metroparks has more than 40 programs that fit the STEM
definition of hands-on, inquiry-based learning.
Programs are available at many Lake Metroparks locations
or at your school or facility. With more than 107 unique
classroom programs and assemblies, we have something
for everyone! We can also work with teachers to design a
custom or multi-session program to fit their needs. We also
offer programs for homeschool families as well as gifted and
after school clubs. We can also adapt programs to meet the
needs and interests of individuals with disabilities.
engaging, exciting & fun!
We all know that “Cleveland rocks,” but did you know that
your class can explore the rock ledges and discover the signs
of glaciations that occurred in Lake County in a program
called Cleveland Rocks Did you ever think about walking
into a ten-foot-tall cell When classes study Structures &
Functions in Nature that’s what they experience. Our outdoor
education programs have students exploring on snowshoes
and cross-country skis, paddling rivers and lakes on kayaks
and even exploring the Physics of Sports. In Crops & Critters,
students tour Farmpark’s gardens and taste vegetables,
learn about renewable energy and meet a variety of farm
animals up close. In Walk about Wildlife, students learn
about wildlife rehabilitation and meet some of Ohio’s
threatened and special interest species.
In addition to all of our school programs, we also offer
professional development opportunities for teachers, many in
cooperation with Lake Erie College or NEOEA. We also invite
teachers to participate in our Teacher Ambassador Program.
Teacher Ambassadors help Lake Metroparks by sharing
their feedback, opinions and best practices to help improve
our program offerings to meet the needs of their students.
