The “Best Team” award is presented to groups that demonstrate teamwork, initiative, clinical expertise, adaptability and the ability to recruit and retain the best nurses. The team of dedicated nurses, social worker, clerk, secretary, medical director and parent advocate work together to bring expertise, commitment, care and support to patients and families. Classes Diabetes Education Classes Nutrition and lifestyle management skills for people with diabetes mellitus. Open to anyone with diabetes, their families and significant others. Call (574) 647-7700. Lung Center Provides free, one-on-one education for those with asthma, COPD and other pulmonary problems. Classes available 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 251-0041 Tuesday through Friday for an appointment. Ortho Classes Hip, knee, shoulder and back classes available at no charge. Call 647-3666 for availability. Call it Quits A six-month telephone-based counseling program staffed by trained nurses to help you stop smoking. You will receive educational materials, follow-up calls and phone access to nurse counseling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Life Steps A comprehensive weight management program that stresses the importance of diet, physical activity and behavior modification techniques for weight loss and maintenance. Classes meet weekly for 16 weeks. Spirit of Women Ongoing programs are available on a variety of women’s health issues. Call 647-7800 for more information. Child/Infant CPR This one-evening class meets American Heart Association guidelines in child/infant CPR and safety. Meets the first Wednesday of the month from 6 to 10 p.m. Class materials must be obtained in advance. $10/person. Register at least two weeks in advance. Preparing for Childbirth Prepares couples for the childbirth experience. $60/couple. Class size is limited. Meets for six weeks. Tour included. Lunch & Learn Prenatal Class One-day intensive version of Preparing for Childbirth. Meets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays once or twice each month. $60/couple. Class size is limited. Tour included. Childbirth Refresher Course A one-evening review for those who have previously taken a childbirth preparation course. $20/couple. Class size is limited. Sibling Orientation Class Children between the ages of 3 and 7 learn about newborns and how to participate in baby care. Meets Saturdays. $5/child. Class size is limited. Tours Free tours of the Center for Mother and Child Care at Memorial Hospital are available throughout the year. Cesarean Birth Preparation Class/VBAC A one-time class for families expecting a Cesarean delivery or wanting a vaginal birth after a Cesarean. Includes a tour. $20. Prenatal Breastfeeding Class Information on breastfeeding taught by certified lactation consultants. Offered monthly. $10/couple. Preparing Young Families Designed for teens and young women who would prefer to work with a smaller group of young expectant mothers and their partners or family members as birth support. Instructions Not Included A fun, informational series that meets four times to cover all the parenting basics. Classes rotate so you can start any week. $15. Health Screenings The Memorial Health Discovery Center, located in 100 Navarre Place, Suite 6670, offers free blood pressure screenings on a walk-in basis from 9 a.m.to 7 p.m. weekdays. Other screenings for blood sugar, cholesterol, osteoporosis and colorectal health are also available for a small fee. An appointment is recommended, but not required.
