corporated as a city in 1886. The city
is the center of one of the most
prosperous dairying regions in the
United States. It is the market town
of Southern Chautauqua and a portion
of Cattaraugus County, N. Y., and
Warren County, Pa. It is connected
by two trolley lines and one railroad
line with the grape regions of northern
Chautauqua the annual product of
which is measured in the millions.
As a place of residence Jamestown
cannot be surpassed. The city is on
the Chadakoin River which is the outlet
of Chautauqua Lake, and only
three miles distant from the lake. Six
excursion steamers make hourly trips
over the lake during the summer
months, thus affording residents opportunity
for argeeable and healthful
outings. A beautiful park is maintained
at the southern end of the lake by
the Celoron Amusement Company.
During the summer months excursions
are brought long distances to this
park. It is only five minutes journey
from the heart of the city.
There is manufactured in and
around Jamestown, wood and metal
furniture, voting machines, washing
machines, pianos, paving brick, cotton
warps and batting, woolen dress
goods and suitings, towels, window
screens and blinds, tools, rubbing,
carving and sanding machines, mirrors,
automobile running gears complete,
veneer for furniture and panels,
beehives, etc., which products are
shipped to every state in the Union,
with a fair percentage exported.
Something over 200 factories and 10,-
000 wage earners are required to produce
these goods. This diversity of
industry enables Jajnestown to successfully
resist financial depression.
Failures are rare, indeed, and a bank
failure has never been experienced.
The leading industry is the manufacture
of wood furniture, 60 factories
being engaged in this line, employing
over 4,000 skilled mechanics. Jamestown
ranks second in the United
States in the manufacture of wood furniture.
The Jamestown Shale Paving
Brick Company has a capacity of 100,-
000 bricks per day. The superiority
of this brick enables the manufacturers
to successfully compete with other
brick products, within a radius of
450 miles, the Jamestown brick having
been selected for paving purposes
in Brooklyn and cities in New Jersey;
also for use in the tunnels of New
York. One of the leading industries
of Jamestown is the manufacture of
metal products, of which there are
six factories making office desks,
tables, railings, filing cases, steel
trimmings and mouldings, doors and
vaults for banks, public and office
buildings, interior and exterior trimmings
for cars, etc., 2,500 metal workers
are employed in the metal products
factories. Approximately 10,-
000,000 feet of lumber are carried in
sorting yards here, to supply the factories
and for supplying mixed carloads
for the eastern markets.
It is claimed and the claim has never
been disputed that a larger majority
of the residents of Jamestown own
their homes than is the case in any
city of a similar size in the State of
New York.
Another feature of the city worthy
of comment is the fact that there are
more churches and church going people
in proportion to the population
than in most cities of a similar size. In
round numbers Jamestown has 25
churches of various denominations.
One denomination has the largest
membership of any city of the size in
the United States. The church edifices
are commodious and costly and
add much to the appearance of the
city.
Law enforcement is strict in Jamestown.
There is comparatively little
crime and little of the criminal element.
The city has one of the best school
systems in the State. There is the
