CITY O F J A M E S T O W N THE_.city is situated on the main line of the Erie Railroad operating between Chicago and New York. Quick and frequent connections with the great New York Central system is maintained by two trolley lines, one on the east side of the lake, The Jamestown, Westfield & Northwestern R. R.; and one on the west side of the lake, The Chautauqua Traction Company. These lines extend from Jamestown to Westfield, a distance of 32 miles. Practically all the through trains of the Central system between Chicago and New York stop here. Connections are also made there with the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad (The Nickle Plate), and connections are made at Mayville with the great Pennsylvania system. In addition to this the city is the southern terminal of the Buffalo and Southwestern branch of the Erie and in close touch by trolley with the Dunkirk, Allegheny Valley & Pittsburgh Railroad at Falconer, a prosperous village, which in everything except name is a suburb of Jamestown. This road extends from Dunkirk, N. Y. and to Titusville, Pa., and taps the rich region of Western Pennsylvania. Pew cities of the size of Jamestown are as well served by trolley lines. The Jamestown Street Railway Company extends from Falconer on the east to Lakewood on the west and one can ride a distance of nearly nine miles for a nickle on these lines. There are four loops in the city—the north side, the south side, the Newland Avenue and the Willard Street lines. These cover practically every section of the city. In addition to the service furnished by the Jamestown Street Railway Company is the service of the Warren & Jamestown Street Railway Company which extends from Jamestown to Warren, Pa., and which touches territory on the south side that is not reached by the other trolley line, bringing residents of Jamestown in easy communication of the beautiful country south of the city, just as the Jamestown Street Railway Company and two traction lines bring them in quick and easy communication of all points on Chautauqua Lake. This issue of the directory shows that the population of Jamestown is steadily increasing. It corroborates the figures of the state census which gives Jamestown a population of 37,839. This is 6,542 more than in 1910, an increase of about 20 per cent. This population by wards is as follows: Citizens. Aliens. Total. Each census for the past 88 years has shown an increase in the population over the preceding census.
