In June 2012, I went to Harvard University for the
Management Course in Higher Education offered by its Graduate
School of Education. The course covered administration and
management training, and as I was serving as Acting Director of
the Academy of Visual Arts at the time, I felt the need to enhance
those skills.
The 15-day course was very intensive. Lectures started at 8:30 am every day, with
hundreds of people sitting together in a large auditorium. Some of the speakers were
former or current presidents of famous universities. They shared the ups and downs as well
as the administrative skills required in the higher education sector sincerely. In addition,
there were practical topics like financial management and interpersonal skills. We had
group discussions in between. Group members came from all over the world and various
disciplines. We exchanged ideas in an open-minded manner on designated topics. The
course ended at 5:30 pm but we had lots of articles to read at night. There were networking
and sightseeing activities on some evenings, including ice-cream tasting, a lobster dinner,
a gathering over beer or a sightseeing cruise. Although exhausting, it was also a fun
experience.
One of the most rewarding experiences during the course was I realised that we were
not alone. We are never the only people who encounter difficult problems at work or feel
stressed out; many people in our field share the same experience. I was also encouraged
that problems can be overcome through understanding and learning, and I got the
message that the most important thing when dealing with people is communication and
mutual respect.
2012 年 6 月 , 我 到 美 國 哈 佛 大 學 參 加 其 教 育 研 究 院 舉 辦 的 高 等 教 育 管 理 課 程 。 課 程 主 要 提 供 教 育
行 政 管 理 的 訓 練 。 當 時 我 正 擔 任 視 覺 藝 術 院 署 理 總 監 , 因 此 覺 得 有 需 要 去 學 習 和 觀 摩 。
為 期 十 五 天 的 課 程 非 常 緊 湊 , 每 天 從 早 上 八 時 半 開 始 , 幾 百 人 坐 在 大 講 堂 內 聽 課 。 當 中 一 些 講
者 是 著 名 大 學 的 退 休 或 現 任 校 長 , 他 們 真 誠 地 分 享 於 大 學 擔 任 行 政 工 作 的 苦 與 樂 和 箇 中 竅 門 。 課 程 更
有 人 事 及 財 政 管 理 等 實 用 內 容 , 亦 有 小 組 專 題 討 論 時 間 , 來 自 不 同 大 學 、 不 同 職 務 範 疇 的 人 分 配 成
組 , 就 一 些 特 定 題 目 坦 誠 交 流 。 每 天 課 程 五 時 半 才 完 結 , 晚 上 還 要 追 讀 很 多 篇 文 章 。 課 後 時 都 有 社 交
活 動 , 我 們 食 雪 糕 、 啖 龍 蝦 、 飲 啤 酒 、 遊 船 觀 光 等 , 雖 然 疲 倦 , 但 充 實 愉 快 。
哈 佛 一 行 , 其 中 一 個 得 著 是 令 我 明 白 「 吾 道 不 孤 」, 即 是 在 工 作 上 碰 到 困 難 , 或 覺 得 洩 氣 , 卻
原 來 很 多 人 都 有 同 樣 經 歷 。 這 儼 如 給 我 一 支 強 心 針 , 知 道 很 多 難 題 都 可 以 透 過 了 解 和 認 知 克 服 ; 課 程
也 帶 給 我 一 個 重 要 訊 息 , 即 人 與 人 之 間 最 重 要 的 還 是 溝 通 和 互 相 尊 重 。

Second life for glass
給 玻 璃 樽 賦 予 第 二 生 命
People who enjoy drinking wine at parties are used to
throwing the glass bottles away. Now it’s time to think about
giving them a second life.
Glass is made of three simple ingredients – silica sand,
limestone and soda ash – and is endlessly recyclable. Although
it won’t decompose into
harmful chemicals, it
consumes the dwindling
landfill space in Hong
Kong.
Most of the glass
bottles disposed of in
Hong Kong are used to
hold beverages. These
bottles can be reused
after they are washed
and sterilised. They can
also be turned into glass
sand, which can replace
natural river sand in the
production of paving
blocks. Indeed, these
eco-paving blocks have
been used in various
projects by the Highways
Department, Civil Engineering and Development Department,
Architectural Services Department, Hong Kong Housing
Authority and Environmental Protection Department.
Glass recycling bins are now also available at 15 locations
on campus. But before you put the bottles into the recycling
bins, please remove their caps, then empty and rinse them.
派 對 狂 歡 少 不 免 會 喝 酒 , 人 們 也 習 慣 把 空 酒 樽 隨 手 丟 棄 在 垃 圾
桶 中 。 可 有 想 過 給 玻 璃 樽 重 生 的 機 會
玻 璃 主 要 以 矽 砂 、 石 灰 石 和 梳 打 灰 製 造 , 可 無 限 次 循 環 再 用 。
雖 然 玻 璃 不 會 分 解 成 有 害 化 學 物 質 , 卻 會 佔 用 香 港 有 限 的 堆 填 區 空
間 。
香 港 大 部 分 玻 璃 樽 均 是 用 來 盛 載 飲 料 , 這 些 玻 璃 樽 經 清 洗 和 高
溫 消 毒 後 , 可 以 再 次 使 用 。 玻 璃 樽 也 可 轉 化 成 玻 璃 砂 , 以 代 替 天 然
河 沙 , 製 成 行 人 路 磚 。 事 實 上 , 這 些 環 保 行 人 路 磚 已 應 用 於 路 政
署 、 土 木 工 程 拓 展 署 、 建 築 署 、 房 屋 委 員 會 和 環
保 署 的 工 程 上 。
校 園 內 有 15 個 地 點 設 有 玻 璃 回 收 筒 ,
收 集 同 事 和 同 學 棄 置 的 玻 璃 樽 。 在 回 收
前 , 請 移 除 蓋 子 , 並 清 洗 玻 璃 樽 。

是 「 不 知 所 踪 」 還 是 「 不 知 所 終 」
常 見 到 「 不 知 所 踪 」 這 個 說 法 , 意 指 「 不 知 道 去 了 哪 裡 」。 我 對 此
感 好 奇 : 因 為 這 個 說 法 既 非 成 語 , 也 不 合 漢 語 的 規 則 。 有 一 個 與 此
較 接 近 的 成 語 叫 「 不 知 所 終 」, 意 思 是 「 不 知 道 結 局 或 下 落 」。 如
果 就 是 這 個 意 思 , 那 麼 寫 成 「 不 知 所 踪 」 就 有 問 題 了 。 漢 語 裡 的 「
所 」 字 是 一 個 助 詞 , 它 的 後 面 需 要 跟 一 個 動 詞 , 而 且 往 往 是 及 物 動
詞 , 合 在 一 起 構 成 一 個 相 當 於 名 詞 的 結 構 , 表 示 該 動 作 導 致 或 涉 及
的 人 、 事 、 物 等 等 。 例 如 「 所 想 」 是 想 到 的 事 情 ,「 所 說 」 是 說 出

的 話 語 ,「 所 殺 」 是 被 殺 的 生 命 。 而 「 不 知 所 踪 」 裡 的 「 踪 」 字 是
名 詞 , 意 為 「 足 跡 」。 名 詞 是 不 能 置 於 「 所 」 字 之 後 與 它 搭 配 使 用
的 。 如 用 「 不 知 其 踪 」, 還 勉 強 說 得 過 去 。
此 外 「 不 知 所 終 」 說 的 是 某 人 已 經 「 終 」 了 。 雖 說 死 活 不 能 絕
對 斷 言 , 但 大 都 情 況 不 妙 。 如 果 只 是 一 般 地 說 不 知 某 人 去 了 哪 裡 ,
用 此 成 語 就 大 為 不 妥 。 那 人 知 道 後 也 許 會 埋 怨 你 詛 咒 他 呢 。
