Commencement signals the start of a new chapter in the lives of our graduates, a time of hope and excitement for the future
tempered with a hint of sadness at the end of school life. On 16, 17 and 19 November, the campus was alive with happy
students, delighted parents and proud teachers as HKBU conferred undergraduate degrees and higher degrees on about 5,700
graduates. We wish all our new graduates the very best for the future!

The Employee Choice Arrangement, launched on 1 November, allows employees to transfer their portion of
mandatory contributions and investment returns (“accrued benefits”) in their contribution account to an MPF
trustee and scheme of their own choice. Should we change our schemes and how do we choose a new trustee
Dr Billy Mak, Associate Professor of the Department of Finance and Decision Sciences gives us some hints.

「 轉 會 」 如 何 選 擇 適 合 的 受 託 人 財 務 及 決 策 學 系 副 教 授 麥 萃 才 博 士 為 大 家 提 供 幾 個 提 示 。
Dr Mak says we don’t need to rush to make changes because we can switch once a year. He
suggests three steps before making any decision:
1. Risk tolerance level evaluation
Generally people who are going to retire shouldn’t choose high-risk investments. Younger
employees can invest in schemes with higher risk and hold their position for a longer
term to gain higher returns. First evaluate your risk tolerance level before choosing an
investment plan.
2. Choose the right products
You can browse the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) website to
find schemes which align with your risk tolerance level. MPFA has a complete list of MPF
schemes in Hong Kong so you just need to pick what suits you. Compare the performance
of the schemes. Did the fund evenly earn a profit over a decade or did it record dramatic
growth just over the last two years It’s better to choose schemes with steady growth.
3. Compare fees and charges
After listing your targets, compare their fees and charges. From funds with similar
performance, choose the ones with the lower fee. The MPFA website lists the Fund
Expense Ratio on all schemes for comparison. The Consumer Council has found that the
fees vary from a high of 4.62% to the lowest 0.17%, a 26 times difference.
Dr Mak points out that the transfer normally takes about six to eight weeks to process.
During this period, fund prices may change due to market fluctuations, and there is a chance of a
“sell low, buy high” scenario occurring. Therefore, we should be mindful of this risk before making
a transfer. “Whether to transfer your MPF is completely your own choice. Don’t just follow the
crowd or switch for the sake of switching,” says Dr Mak.

The fourth floor of the Academic and Administration
Building is popular among students as it houses the
University’s largest Learning Commons, a 1,300 sq m
space for students to study and learn, individually or in
groups. It is divided two zones: Our Zone is free, dynamic
and interactive and is suitable for group discussions, while
My Zone is relatively quiet and suitable for private study.
There are also a number of group study rooms and large
seminar rooms of different sizes.
The Learning Commons was the venue for the Grand
Opening of the Academic and Administration Building
and the Naming Ceremony of the Madam Kwok Chung Bo
Fun Sports and Cultural Centre held on 12 November.

一 、 評 估 承 受 風 險 能 力
他 舉 例 說 , 快 將 退 休 的 僱 員 不 應 把 計 劃 轉 換 為 高 風 險 類 別 , 以
免 賠 本 ; 相 反 較 年 輕 的 僱 員 則 可 以 放 眼 長 遠 回 報 , 轉 移 至 高 風
險 、 高 回 報 的 投 資 。 我 們 應 首 先 認 清 自 己 的 承 受 風 險 能 力 , 才
進 一 步 揀 選 市 場 上 適 合 的 投 資 計 劃 。
二 、 選 擇 合 適 的 投 資 產 品
一 旦 確 認 了 自 己 的 承 受 風 險 能 力 , 便 可 以 到 積 金 局 的 網 頁 尋 找
相 關 的 投 資 項 目 。 積 金 局 齊 集 全 港 強 積 金 產 品 的 資 料 , 大 家 只
需 搜 尋 相 關 風 險 的 投 資 產 品 即 可 。 然 後 , 我 們 要 比 較 它 們 的 回
報 , 例 如 過 去 十 年 的 高 回 報 是 平 均 地 增 長 , 還 是 近 一 兩 年 才 急
升 若 平 均 地 增 長 則 代 表 該 投 資 較 為 穩 健 。
三 、 比 較 基 金 收 費
確 定 了 數 項 合 適 的 投 資 後 , 再 比 較 它 們 的 收 費 , 若 回 報 相 若 則
當 然 挑 選 收 費 較 低 的 項 目 。 網 頁 上 每 個 項 目 均 有 基 金 開 支 比 率
(Fund Expense Ratio), 大 家 可 自 行 比 較 。 根 據 消 費 者 委 員 會 的
報 告 , 比 率 最 高 可 達 4.62%, 最 低 為 0.17%, 相 差 達 26 倍 , 大
家 應 小 心 選 擇 。
最 後 , 麥 博 士 提 醒 大 家 , 整 個 轉 移 權 益 程 序 一 般 需 時 約 六 至 八 個

令 我 們 「 低 賣 高 買 」, 所 以 轉 移 前 要 特 別 留 心 。 他 強 調 :「 轉 移 與 否 要
自 己 決 定 , 千 萬 不 要 抱 著 『 人 轉 我 轉 』 或 『 為 轉 而 轉 』 的 心 態 。」

First graduation ceremony
首 屆 畢 業 典 禮
The year 1960 was a milestone
year in HKBU’s history as the first
batch of students graduated in July.
In its early years, one of the many
challenges the then Baptist College
faced was that it did not have its
own campus and had to borrow
space from Pui Ching Middle School
for lectures. The first graduation
ceremony was also held in the
auditorium of the Pui Ching Middle
School. In this precious photograph
taken over half a century ago, the
graduates are lined up in procession,
eager to receive their certificates and to embark on a new phase of their lives.
There were a total of 66 graduates that year. After graduation, they explored different paths,
either starting their careers or studying further overseas. Time flies, and two years ago, 12 of the
“Big Brothers” who graduated in 1960 celebrated their 50th graduation anniversary with a reunion
at HKBU. Their hair may have greyed but the wonderful times they had during their school days
surely remain, just like this old photograph, etched in their minds.
1960 年 是 浸 大 歷 史 上 的 一 個 里 程 碑 ── 第 一 屆 畢 業 生 在 這 一 年 7 月 誕 生 。 當 年 的 浸 會 學 院 , 創
辦 初 期 舉 步 維 艱 , 並 無 獨 立 校 舍 , 需 借 用 培 正 中 學 部 分 校 舍 授 課 。 而 首 屆 畢 業 典 禮 , 也 是 在 培 正 中
學 的 禮 堂 舉 行 。 在 這 幀 攝 於 逾 半 世 紀 前 的 珍 貴 舊 相 片 中 , 畢 業 生 正 列 隊 徐 徐 步 向 台 上 , 準 備 接 受 他
們 的 畢 業 證 書 ; 與 此 同 時 , 迎 接 人 生 另 一 個 新 階 段 。
當 日 共 有 66 名 畢 業 生 , 當 中 或 投 入 社 會 服 務 , 或 赴 笈 海 外 繼 續 升 學 , 各 自 開 創 屬 於 自 己 的 道
路 。 時 光 晃 眼 流 逝 , 兩 年 前 , 當 中 12 位 「 大 師 兄 」 在 畢 業 五 十 周 年 紀 念 的 時 候 , 重 聚 浸 大 。 眾 人 縱
已 髮 鬢 如 霜 , 但 昔 日 求 學 的 快 樂 時 光 , 卻 儼 然 這 舊 相 片 般 , 永 久 留 存 。

Behind the sunglasses

The finale episode is always the most interesting. At the end of an interview with Prof Ting for
the Eyes on HKBU e-newsletter in which he shared stories from his student days as well as insights on
world affairs, he was asked which particular world event impacted him the most. He pondered for a
few seconds and recounted an incident which shook him but was little known in the outside world.
In 1981, on a bitterly cold night right after Christmas, Prof Ting, who was studying in Paris, went
to the Chinese restaurant where he worked part-time. Close to midnight, the customers at the last
table suddenly drew guns and began to rob the restaurant. In the chaos, his right eye was hit by a
coffee cup hurled by one of the robbers. His face was covered in blood and he realised he had no
vision in the eye. Part of the iris in his right eye had to be removed, he was in hospital for 19 days and
went through a three-month recovery period but thanks to the medical expertise of the French, his
sight was fully restored. However, the pupil of his right eye can no longer shrink under light. Therefore,
even in mild sunshine, he must wear sunglasses. Sometimes people joke that he resembles the hero
of John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow. “They don’t know about the blood and tears story behind the
sunglasses,” he says.
The experience shocked him but also made a positive impact. He grasped the impermanence of
life and was determined to lead a good life. Also, he became an expert on sunglasses. His right eye is
a connoisseur of the ability of sunglasses to shield the eyes. Read the interview with Prof Ting in the

件 。1981 年 , 聖 誕 節 過 後 一 個 嚴 寒 夜 晚 , 留 學 巴 黎 的 他 如 常 到 中 國 餐

眼 鏡 , 否 則 幾 分 鐘 便 感 到 不 適 。 有 人 看 他 架 著 墨 鏡 走 來 走 去 , 還 取 笑 他 真 像 電 影 《 英 雄 本 色 》 的 主
角 。「 他 們 不 知 道 那 墨 鏡 背 後 的 血 淚 。」 他 笑 嘆 。
那 次 經 歷 對 他 衝 擊 極 大 , 但 正 面 影 響 是 讓 他 感 悟 人 生 無 常 , 決 定 要 好 好 生 活 。 他 更 因 此 成 為 太

Professor John Aiken, Director of the Academy
of Visual Arts, tells us how, when and why he
knew sculpture was his calling.
It was almost a Eureka moment. I remember waking
up one morning and thinking “Oh my goodness, I’m going
to be an artist for the rest of my life!” It was frightening but
also liberating. My approach to making the work changed,
I took ownership of it. It stopped being me trying to think
of something to do because my teacher demanded it.
I was about 20, in my second year at art school then.
I could have pursued painting, printmaking or design but
I decided I wanted to be a sculptor. Sculpture in the 60s
and early 70s was going through a renaissance. It had
developed from the traditional processes of sculpture
to using light, photography, performance, and video. It
was liberated from the perception of being a heavy, not
very intellectual activity. In the past, painting held the
intellectual high ground. From the early 60s, sculpture
began to set the agenda.
I started to make work which was much more
personal, to be more adventurous with the use of
materials and ideas and in terms of scale. I had a point of
view.
My two years as a Rome scholar in Sculpture were
another turning point for me culturally. Italy in the 1970s,
with its Mediterranean lifestyle was in stark contrast to
the winter of discontent in the UK where there were fuel
shortages and strikes. I enjoyed the lifestyle and the city
of Rome very much. The opportunity to live in a foreign
city where all I had to think about was making art and
enjoying myself was a unique experience.

說 來 真 如 靈 光 一 閃 般 奇 妙 。 還 記 得 有 天 早 上 醒 來 , 我
腦 海 中 忽 然 閃 過 這 樣 一 個 念 頭 :「 天 啊 ! 我 畢 生 都 要 當 一
個 藝 術 家 !」 那 一 剎 令 人 吃 驚 , 卻 又 教 我 無 比 釋 然 , 從
此 , 我 可 以 改 變 創 作 模 式 , 由 自 己 作 主 , 不 再 為 了 迎 合 老
師 要 求 而 創 作 。
當 時 我 大 約 20 歲 , 正 在 大 學 讀 二 年 級 。 我 可 以 選 擇 繪
畫 、 版 畫 或 設 計 , 但 我 決 心 成 為 雕 塑 家 。60 年 代 至 70 年 代
初 , 雕 塑 藝 術 經 歷 了 復 興 時 期 , 突 破 了 傳 統 的 雕 塑 藝 術 ,
演 化 至 利 用 燈 光 、 攝 影 、 表 演 和 影 像 來 表 達 , 改 變 了 一 般
人 對 雕 塑 藝 術 沉 重 而 思 維 性 不 強 的 觀 感 。 曾 幾 何 時 , 油 畫
佔 領 智 慧 高 地 , 但 由 60 年 代 初 起 , 雕 塑 藝 術 開 始 抬 頭 。
我 的 作 品 開 始 趨 向 個 人 化 , 對 物 料 、 構 思 以 至 規 模 都
更 為 大 膽 。 我 有 我 的 觀
點 。
在 羅 馬 任 教 的 兩
年 , 為 我 帶 來 一 個 文 化
方 面 的 轉 捩 點 。70 年

I only dressed
up and went to my
graduation at the
University of Sheffield
because of my mum.
She had gone out
and bought me an
unusually nice fur-lined
gown. At a typical
graduation in the UK, you turn up with your classmates, and go on stage to
collect your certificate from the vice-chancellor of the University. Once the
ceremony is over, you take photos. It’s not as big a deal as it is in Hong Kong; I
think we just went off to the pub after.
After graduation, I was very sure about what I wanted to do and I’ve
achieved it. I think a bit of stubbornness is key. I fell in love with the outdoors
on a camping trip with friends to the Lake District when I was in school
and because I wanted to study something that would let me be outdoors,
I completed a degree in geology. I also always wanted to go
overseas so I applied for PhDs and accepted one from the
University of London which involved field work in Kenya.
I didn’t even attend my PhD graduation ceremony
because I had already taken up a job in Malawi. I could
have got dressed up in a crimson robe but I don’t enjoy
wearing gowns. Even a tie makes me twitch. I’ve got a
little more used to dressing in academic regalia now as
I’ve attended a number of ceremonies at HKBU as Head
of the Geography Department.
那 年 , 媽 媽 特 意 出 外 為 我 買 來 一 件 十 分 漂 亮 、 毛 皮
襯 裡 的 畢 業 袍 , 完 全 是 為 了 她 , 我 才 穿 起 它 來 , 出 席 我
在 英 國 謝 菲 爾 德 大 學 的 畢 業 禮 。 在 一 個 典 型 的 英 國 畢 業
典 禮 中 , 同 學 會 一 起 到 場 , 然 後 走 到 台 上 , 從 校 長 手 上
接 過 畢 業 證 書 。 儀 式 結 束 後 , 大 家 便 拍 照 留 念 , 並 不 如
香 港 的 畢 業 禮 那 樣 隆 重 。 我 記 得 我 們 後 來 只 是 去 了 酒
吧 。
畢 業 後 , 我 非 常 肯 定 自 己 的 志 願 , 而 我 也 的 確 成 功
了 。 我 想 , 自 己 的 一 點 固 執 是 關 鍵 吧 。 中 學 時 , 我 和 朋
友 到 湖 區 露 營 , 自 始 便 愛 上 了 野 外 活 動 , 更 因 此 想 學 習
一 門 可 以 讓 我 長 時 間 逗 留 在 戶 外 的 科 目 , 結 果 我 念 了 一
個 地 質 學 學 位 。 我 也 一 直 想 出 國 去 , 所 以 申 請 博 士 學 位
時 , 便 選 擇 到 英 國 倫 敦 大 學 就 讀 , 因 為 有 機 會 讓 我 到 肯
尼 亞 野 外 考 察 。
後 來 , 我 甚 至 沒 有 參 加 博 士 畢 業 典 禮 , 因 為 那 時 候 我 已
經 在 馬 拉 維 工 作 。 我 本 來 要 穿 起 深 紅 色 的 長 袍 , 但 我 實 在 不 怎 喜 歡
披 上 畢 業 袍 , 單 是 領 帶 已 教 我 覺 得 拘 束 了 。 近 年 來 我 已 較 為 習 慣 穿 上 畢 業
袍 , 因 擔 任 地 理 系 系 主 任 後 , 我 已 出 席 了 不 少 場 畢 業 典 禮 。
In November, HKBU celebrated its 53rd commencement, bidding
farewell to another batch of graduates full of hope for the future. We
asked a few colleagues to look back on their own graduations and
describe their memories, hopes and desires on that day.

university life.
On that day, the campus
was crowded but lively and adorned with flags. After the ceremony, graduates
were taking photos at every corner of the campus. It seemed like they wanted to
capture every minute of their three years at university. In fact, I wasn’t keen on
taking photos because it felt like confirmation that my wonderful school days
had come to the end, although working at HKBU now could be seen as a good
continuation of school life. However, I think university graduation was really a
milestone of joy when I saw the smiles of my parents and the excited faces of my
former schoolmates as we took photos with our arms around each other.
I only regretted that my maternal grandfather wasn’t there to share my
happiness. He was seriously ill when I was in my third year at university. I recall
him lying on the bed, holding my hands and saying with tears in his eyes that
he really wanted to hold on till I put my graduation gown on. To fulfill his wish, I
later put my graduation photo on his grave.

浸 大 工 作 , 猶 如 校 園 生 活 的 延 續 。 話 雖 如 此 , 當 我 看 見 父 母 欣 慰 的 表 情 , 還 有 昔
日 同 窗 和 宿 友 興 奮 地 拉 著 我 的 樣 子 , 我 覺 得 畢 業 禮 實 在 是 人 生 中 一 個 歡 欣 的 里 程
碑 。
當 日 唯 一 的 遺 憾 , 是 外 公 不 能 出 席 我 的 畢 業 禮 。 還 記 得 大 學 三 年 級 時 , 病 重
的 他 躺 在 床 上 緊 握 我 雙 手 , 熱 淚 盈 眶 地 說 很 想 等 到 我 穿 畢 業 袍 的 那 一 天 。 於 是 ,
我 後 來 在 他 的 墓 前 放 了 一 張 畢 業 照 , 算 是 圓 了 他 的 心 願 。

When I unexpectedly did not
gain admission to my first choice,
The University of Hong Kong, I
went to National Taiwan University
for my degree in philosophy.
My life turned a new page and
student life in Taiwan became
my most cherished memory.
Initially I had never thought about
furthering my studies overseas.
When my girlfriend in Hong Kong broke up with me I decided to leave this place of
sorrow, and I got a full scholarship to the United States for my PhD in Year 4. At my
graduation ceremony, my schoolmates and I wore graduation gowns and took photos
around campus. While I was reluctant to part with my dear friends, I was also excited at
the prospect of embarking on another journey, and amazed how a loss had turned into a
gain, leading me to uncharted territory.
Looking back, my life has been full of surprises. When I landed on US soil, I never
imagined that I would stay there for 10 years. After finishing the PhD programme in
philosophy at the State University of New York, I got admission to Yale University for a
PhD in religious studies. All those experiences were entirely beyond my planning and
expectations. Therefore, I believe that if we pursue our dreams and persevere till the end,
life may pleasantly surprise us.
I was unable to wait for my PhD graduation ceremony and rushed to Yale University
after finalising my thesis. Then, when I graduated from Yale, I was working at HKBU when
the graduation ceremony was held and couldn’t squeeze time to attend. As a result, I
have two PhDs, but missed the opportunity twice to wear a gown and participate in the
ceremony.
當 年 意 外 地 未 能 進 入 心
儀 的 香 港 大 學 , 於 是 前 往 台 灣
國 立 大 學 念 哲 學 , 沒 想 到 反 而
開 啟 了 另 一 片 天 , 成 為 我 人 生
最 珍 惜 的 一 段 歲 月 。 起 初 從 未
想 過 到 外 國 繼 續 進 修 的 我 , 後
來 因 為 香 港 的 女 朋 友 變 心 , 於
是 毅 然 決 定 離 開 這 個 傷 心 地 ,
並 在 大 學 四 年 級 獲 得 全 額 獎 學
金 到 美 國 攻 讀 博 士 。 猶 記 得 在
畢 業 典 禮 舉 行 時 , 我 和 同 窗 好
友 穿 上 畢 業 袍 拍 照 留 念 、 依 依
惜 別 之 際 , 心 情 卻 又 因 為 即 將
踏 上 另 一 個 征 途 而 興 奮 , 也 為
塞 翁 失 馬 的 人 生 轉 向 而 感 概 唏 噓 。
回 首 過 去 , 我 的 人 生 可 說 是 充 滿 驚 喜 。 去 到 美 國 , 我 不 曾 想 到 一 留 便 是 十 年 。 在 紐
約 州 立 大 學 取 得 哲 學 的 博 士 學 位 後 , 又 在 一 番 機 緣 下 得 到 耶 魯 大 學 取 錄 , 讓 我 念 宗 教 研 究
博 士 課 程 。 這 一 段 段 的 經 歷 , 完 全 在 我 意 料 之 外 。 故 此 , 我 相 信 只 要 抱 著 不 息 的 心 , 一 直
追 求 自 己 的 夢 想 , 生 命 總 會 給 你 意 想 不 到 的 驚 喜 。
完 成 第 一 個 博 士 課 程 的 論 文 後 , 等 不 及 畢 業 典 禮 , 我 便 匆 匆 趕 去 耶 魯 大 學 報 到 ; 而
從 耶 魯 畢 業 , 畢 業 禮 舉 行 時 , 我 又 已 身 在 香 港 , 並 在 浸 大 上 班 了 , 無 法 抽 出 時 間 回 去 參
與 。 結 果 , 我 取 得 兩 個 博 士 學 位 , 卻 又 兩 度 錯 失 披 上 博 士 袍 參 加 畢 業 禮 的 機 會 。

I graduated from the

in Public Relations
and Advertising. The
Commencement was
held at the Academic
Community Hall. The
moment I cherish the
most was when I went
onstage to receive the graduation certificate with my parents watching in the
audience – the three years of studying hard finally paid off! In addition, my
classmates and I had been working for some time when the Commencement
was held. So it was nice to see each other and walk on to a new stage of
our lives together. Our younger schoolmates also joined our graduation
celebration and took photos with us.
Looking back, I didn’t set
any specific career goal. I hoped
to join an industry which I was
interested in and which would
allow me to develop further.
Fortunately over the years, I
have been able to find jobs
related to my area of study. I
could apply what I learned and
appreciate the beauty of Whole
Person Education. In my three
years at HKBU, I remember
that to fulfill the University Life
course requirements, I enrolled
in a lot of the University Forums
held on Tuesday and listened
to various speakers speak
on different topics. These
forums not only widened my
knowledge base but also made
me more open to different
things.

回 想 當 年 畢 業 時 , 並 無 為 事 業 定 下 具 體 目 標 , 只 希 望 能 從 事 自 己 感 興 趣 、
且 發 展 空 間 大 的 行 業 。 幸 運 地 這 些 年 來 , 一 直 能 找 到 與 本 科 主 修 相 關 的 工 作 ,
讓 我 學 以 致 用 , 更 懂 得 欣 賞 浸 大 的 全 人 教 育 。 還 記 得 在 浸 大 的 三 年 , 我 們 要 達
致 「 大 學 生 活 」 一 科 的 要 求 , 經 常 出 席 逢 星 期 二 舉 辦 的 大 學 論 壇 , 聆 聽 不 同 講
者 就 廣 泛 題 材 發 表 演 說 。 這 不 但 擴 闊 了 我 的 知 識 面 , 也 培 養 我 日 後 對 不 同 事 物

When I graduated from Universite de La Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris III there was no special graduation day at
the Bachelor’s level. We had our finals in May or June and then there was a tense wait to see if you’d gathered
enough credits. Our diploma was posted to us. There was nervousness and excitement leading up to receiving
the diploma but once I received it, I went on with life without doing anything special to celebrate.
In Hong Kong, there’s more emphasis on the student’s role in the community which may be why graduation
is a community celebration. It is also an important day for parents here. It has become a symbol of a possible
future, the gateway to a good job. Although it was tough to graduate in France and a Bachelor’s degree was not
accessible to the wide majority, in the 80s you could envisage getting a good job without a very long education.
I did have a great party when I finished my PhD though. I booked a room at the Finnish Cultural
Centre just across from the Sorbonne and invited the jury panel members as
well as my friends to a celebration after my viva. We then had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant on the bank of the Seine. The jury
members were surprised to be invited – but in a good way. I was really happy because I got the highest recommendation possible,
a distinction and highly commended. Also my thesis was recommended for publication and was indeed published in two years. I
couldn’t ask for more!
當 我 畢 業 於 巴 黎 第 三 大 學 ( 新 索 邦 大 學 ) 的 時 候 , 本 科 生 並 沒 有 特 定 的 畢 業 日 子 。 五 月 或 六 月 , 我 們 便 完 成 考 試 , 然 後 就 是 一 場 緊 張 的
等 待 , 看 看 能 否 獲 得 足 夠 的 學 分 。 文 憑 是 以 郵 遞 方 式 寄 給 我 們 的 , 期 待 它 來 的 過 程 既 焦 慮 又 興 奮 , 但 當 真 正 收 到 時 , 我 又 不 過 是 如 常 生 活 , 沒

I’m here for one semester to assist the
Department of Social Work in building its
research capability. During my time here,
I’ve been helping the Department develop
its degree in social policy and advising staff
on their research publications and funding
applications.
I recently retired from full-time work at
the University of Sheffield and so I was
able to accept the invitation to come to Hong Kong. I have a number of friends
here as the University of Sheffield has a long-standing relationship with the
Department of Social Work at HKBU because many people from this Department
have been trained and done post-graduate work there.
My own research focuses include the legacy of mega-events such as
expos and the Olympics, and also tourist culture. I’ll be going to Sun Yat Sen
University in Guangzhou in December to explore this more. I am also interested
in sociology in Europe and being here has enabled me to better understand how
Europe is perceived from the outside, particularly in the context of the rise of
China.
Hong Kong has certainly made an
impression – the incredible density of
housing, the way the city is managed
in terms of transport links, the beaches
and the hills. The museums here
are fantastic. The exhibition of the
terracotta warriors at the Hong Kong
Museum of History was brilliant, even
better than seeing them in Xi’an. And
coming from the UK, I am enjoying the
warmer weather. Overall, it’s been a
pleasure to be here.

天 然 去 污 劑 —— 茶 籽 粉
Hi, it’s Greenbee here again! You may have come across many kinds
of detergent in the market. Some claim to be effective in removing stains
while others say they are gentle on the skin. But they are all chemicals!
Now let me introduce you to an eco-friendly and cheap cleaner – camellia
seed powder.
Camellia seed powder contains saponin, a
naturally-occurring tea, which can quickly remove
oil stains. The powder can be used to wash dishes,
fruit and vegetables, and even your body and hair as well
as to water plants. It dissolves pesticide residue and
has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-itchy
properties. More importantly, it is inexpensive. Just a
small amount can be used for a few months.
Recently 60 HKBU Low-carbon Ambassadors tried camellia
seed powder when doing the dishes during their environmental
leadership training camp. Here’s what they suggest:
Washing dishes
Mix the powder with water and wash the dishes with a scouring pad.
Normally one tablespoon of powder is enough for six to 10 dishes.
Greasy cookware
If the cookware is too greasy, increase the quantity of powder. Apply the
powder to the moistened surface of the cookware and scrub. Rinse with
water.

My Job
「 職 」 是 說
I have been with the Special Collections and Archives Section of the
University Library for about five years. The nature of my job is interesting and
varied. Communication is part of my job as I need to explain our guidelines to
patrons. Some of the collections cannot be checked out and I try to provide
knowledge and assistance to patrons who are looking for such special
information. For preservation and conservation, I have been trained on the
job to repair and digitise old books, to clean up paintings and to remove
mould from the materials using simple tools. In fact, this kind of work is
artisanal. When I cleaned the first painting, I was in the mood to appreciate
the artwork; however, it really tried my patience when I needed to face 200
paintings.
When processing archival materials, I am exposed to poetry and
literature as well as painting. Over time, all these have broadened my
horizons and become part of my knowledge base. As a result, when many

Prof Bian Zhaoxiang was appointed to the post of
Associate Vice-President with effect from
1 November to assist in planning and launching
the Chinese Medicine teaching hospital project

Division of the School of Chinese Medicine.

Prof Raymond Wong, Chair Professor in Chemistry
and Associate Head of the Department of Chemistry,
was presented with the 2012 Ho Leung Ho Lee
Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological
Innovation (Award for Youth Innovation), the first
Hong Kong native to receive this award since the
establishment of the Foundation in 1994.

graduated in history, literature or even fine art, but actually
I was a science student. That gives me great satisfaction!

內 地 的 開 放 為 漢 語 帶 來 一 個 新 問 題 : 帶 有 西 文 字 母 的 詞 語 日 漸 增
多 。 新 版 《 現 代 漢 語 詞 典 》 把 含 西 文 字 母 的 詞 語 放 在 詞 典 正 文 內 。 這
說 明 它 們 或 多 或 少 已 成 為 漢 語 的 正 式 成 員 了 , 例 如 ,AB 制 、ATM 機 等
等 。
對 此 , 社 會 上 和 學 術 界 都 有 爭 議 。 反 對 派 主 要 出 於 捍 衛 母 語 純 潔
和 健 康 的 良 好 意 願 。 的 確 , 漢 語 處 理 外 來 詞 歷 來 用 意 譯 、 音 譯 或 半 音
譯 、 半 意 譯 的 方 法 , 但 由 此 而 生 的 新 詞 語 普 及 需 要 時 間 。 而 現 實 的 難
題 是 , 如 今 外 來 詞 在 有 定 論 前 已 經 不 脛 而 走 ; 有 些 則 很 難 有 合 適 的 翻
譯 。 例 如 , 不 說 「 卡 拉 OK」 說 什 麼 ( 有 人 稱 作 「 客 來 謳 歌 」 或 「 隨

其 實 , 漢 語 中 也 不 是 絕 對 沒 有 外 來 語 的 原 形 。 阿 拉 伯 數 字 就 是 外
國 字 。 由 於 這 些 數 字 的 普 及 化 , 漢 語 裡 還 產 生 了 〇 這 個 形 式 。 你 會 在
門 上 寫 「 五 零 三 」, 或 者 信 尾 寫 「 二 零 零 零 年 」 嗎 所 以 , 人 們 表 示
數 碼 時 都 習 慣 用 〇 來 表 示 「 零 」。 據 此 , 對 西 文 字 母 我 們 應 該 從 嚴 控
制 , 但 不 應 一 概 拒 用 。

Hong Kong. The tool can help students enhance selfunderstanding
and formulate their own personal
