The 1,600 music lovers who attended the HKBU Annual Gala Concert on 26 May at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in
Tsim Sha Tsui were treated to an enthralling performance by the HKBU Symphony Orchestra conducted by Prof Johnny Poon,
Head of the Department of Music and music director of the Orchestra. World-renowned pianist Miss Valentina Lisitsa was the
guest performer at the concert.
Miss Lisitsa has a vast orchestral repertoire and is one of the most sought-after classical musicians on the Internet, with
more than 55 million views on her YouTube channel. She was accompanied by the Orchestra in performing Rachmaninov’s
Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18. The Orchestra also performed Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture, Op. 26, and
Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36. The concert was sponsored by Shun Hing Group.

A fall in the price of gold sparked off a flurry of buying in retail shops around the world. We asked Prof Joseph
Fung of the Department of Finance and Decision Sciences about the allure of gold as an investment.
黃 金 價 格 下 跌 引 發 全 球 零 售 市 場 一 股 搶 金 熱 潮 。 我 們 就 這 情 況 訪 問 了 財 務 及 決 策 學 系 馮 觀 榮 教 授 , 談 談 黃 金 投 資 的 吸 引 力 。
According to Prof Fung, there are two opposing forces affecting the price of gold and influencing the
subsequent retail interest in the precious metal. “The price of gold has a pretty strong relationship with
interest rates,” explains Prof Fung. “Since gold offers no dividend, when interest rates are high, there’s no
point holding onto gold. When interest rates are low, the cost of holding onto gold is close to zero, making
it very attractive. Since there were some predictions that the interest rates were going to rise, some
investors began to sell their gold holdings, causing the price to fall.”
The Quantitative Easing policy adopted by the US Federal Reserve Bank had kept interest rates
low and flooded the market with money. The rush to buy gold among ordinary people in Asia might
have been influenced by what Prof Fung terms “the ancient theory of money”.
He points out that in the past, monetary supply was linked to gold holdings,
although the gold standard has been abandoned in modern times. “The
amount of gold in the world is pretty stable. But the amount of money is
increasing and rising fast with quantitative easing by central banks. So when
people compare the value of money to the value of gold, they probably
conclude that the price of gold will continue to increase.”
Gold has also been an investment of choice during market
volatility. However, Prof Fung says that with American employment
figures improving and the European Union still intact, some of the
shine of gold has faded. “Global risk factors are reducing, so gold will
become less attractive. If people have to dump something, they’ll
dump gold first.
Although jewellery shops seemed to be running out of gold,
Prof Fung says that the supply of gold in the world is stable. “Gold
is not consumable and can be recycled. In the past, gold was used in
electronics such as integrated circuits, but demand for these uses has declined.”
Contrary to popular belief, he says physical gold is hard to trade for retail
customers as Hong Kong lacks a transparent market. When you sell gold to jewellery shops,
they deduct about 4.5% as a fee. There are hidden costs involved in trading with local gold merchants
who trade in paper gold contracts (loco London gold in USD, loco tael gold in HKD, and loco RMB gold in
RMB). However, these markets are “isolated” or “segmented” from other markets. Of course, street clients
or ordinary investors are trading at unfavourable prices compared with the international market. “The
best way for retail investors to invest in gold is to get educated. There are courses out there to qualify
you to open a futures trading account which allows investors to obtain participation in gold at fair world
prices,” he says.

本 則 近 乎 零 , 因 此 相 當 吸 引 。 現 因 有 人 預 測 利 率 將 會 上 升 ,
令 部 分 投 資 者 陸 續 拋 售 手 上 的 黃 金 , 引 致 金 價 下 跌 。」
美 國 聯 邦 儲 備 銀 行 採 納 的 量 化 寬 鬆 政 策 令 利 率 持 續 偏
低 , 致 使 大 量 貨 幣 湧 入 市 場 。 亞 洲 地 區 普 羅 大 眾 搶 購 黃 金 的
現 象 , 或 正 受 馮 教 授 所 稱 的 「 亞 洲 貨 幣 理 論 」 影 響 。 他 指 出
以 往 的 貨 幣 供 應 量 與 持 金 量 掛 鈎 , 儘 管 今 時 今 日 金 本 位 制 已
遭 廢 除 。「 全 世 界 的 黃 金 量 十 分 穩 定 , 但 由 於 在 量 化 寬 鬆 政
策 下 , 貨 幣 數 量 正 在 快 速 增 加 , 因 此 當 人 們 把 貨 幣
值 與 黃 金 值 比 較 時 , 往 往 斷 定 金 價 將 會 繼 續 上
升 。」
在 市 場 波 動 時 , 黃 金 是 投 資 工 具 中 的 精

需 求 已 經 下 降 。」
與 普 遍 觀 點 相 反 , 他 認 為 由 於 香 港 的 市 場 欠 缺 透 明 度 ,
零 售 顧 客 難 以 買 賣 實 金 。 珠 寶 店 回 購 黃 金 時 , 會 收 取 現 貨 價
格 約 4.5% 的 手 續 費 。 而 本 地 黃 金 商 人 進 行 紙 黃 金 交 易 ( 以 美

Farewell retiring
colleagues
歡 送 退 休 同 事
The University bid farewell to retiring staff members who
had served HKBU for 10 or more years at the Faculty and Staff
Assembly on 24 May. President Albert Chan presented the retiring
colleagues with souvenirs as a gesture of thanks for their longterm
dedicated service. The retiring colleagues mingled with wellwishers
at a tea reception held after the Assembly.

In the 1960s,
Hong Kong’s economy
was flourishing. With a
soaring demand from
the community for upto-date
information,
the then Baptist
College saw a strong
need for well-trained
and ethical media
professionals since no
relevant professional
disciplines were
available at any of
the local tertiary
institutions. In 1968, the College pioneered communication education in Hong
Kong by founding the Department of Communication which has become
the cradle of communication professionals ever since. Nowadays, the then
Department of Communication had transformed into as one of the most fullfledged
Schools of Hong Kong Baptist University. What has never changed is the
School’s strong commitment to its motto “Truth is Virtue”, urging its teachers and
students to always pursue the truth and strive for perfection.

Mr Cheng Yan-kee was appointed Chairman of the Council and
the Court early this year. A structural engineer by profession,
he tells us how he became an engineer and about a particularly
memorable project in his career.
My interest in structures and engineering probably stems from a
childhood frequently exposed to buildings and structures as my father is
a senior member of the profession. Given my interest in the field, I chose
to study civil engineering at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania in the US,
a premier residential research university with outstanding engineering
programmes.
In July 1976, I started to work at SOM Chicago, which had been
involved in the 100-story John Hancock Centre and the 110-story Sears
Tower. It was an eye-opening opportunity. I acquired useful experience in
collaborating with architects, teamwork, problem-solving and research for
practical application relating to large-scale projects. These skills held me in
good stead when I joined my father’s company, H.K. Cheng & Partners Ltd,
and later while serving on public bodies.
Over the years, I worked on the structural and foundation design
of many notable structures in Hong Kong and Mainland China. One
memorable project was the Sun Dong An building in the heart of
Wangfujing in Beijing.
As Beijing is in a high seismic area, the project enabled me to perfect
the art of designing buildings for seismic performance and safety. It also
exposed me to Mainland China’s style of professional practice. Many of the
people I met then have become my good friends.
I also witnessed a “changing” China. Basement parking was initially
intended for bicycles in 1992, then for motorcycles, and when construction
was completed in 1996, for motor cars! Likewise, the theatres, from “old
style” Beijing theatres, to that for “big screens”, then “mini”s! This all reveals
the speed at which society was moving forward.
In such a fast-changing world, I appreciate how HKBU, as a university,
has remained true to its core values and mission, even as it keeps pace with
the times. We need to balance agility (seizing opportunities) with absorption
(surviving threats). I see this as HKBU’s major challenge in the coming years.

讓 他 印 象 深 刻 的 工 程 項 目 。
家 父 是 業 內 著 名 的 結 構 工 程 師 , 所 以 小 時 候 的 我 已 經 常 有 機 會 接 觸 到 各
式 建 築 物 , 大 抵 在 耳 濡 目 染 下 , 培 養 出 對 建 築 物 和 工 程 學 的 濃 厚 興 趣 。 順 理
成 章 , 我 選 擇 前 往 美 國 一 所 提 供 著 名 工 程 學 課 程 的 研 究 型 大 學 ── 賓 夕 法 尼
亞 州 理 海 大 學 , 主 修 土 木 工 程 學 。
我 於 1976 年 7 月 加 入 SOM Chicago 工 作 , 該 公 司 曾 負 責 樓 高 100 層 的

基 ; 而 當 中 最 令 我 難 忘 的 項 目 為 位 於 北 京 王 府 井 的 新 東 安 廣 場 。
由 於 北 京 位 處 地 震 帶 上 , 這 個 項 目 讓 我 接 觸 到 設 計 具 抗 震 和 安 全 性 能 的
建 築 物 之 專 門 技 術 , 也 認 識 到 內 地 的 專 業 作 業 模 式 ; 不 少 項 目 中 的 夥 伴 更 成
為 了 我 的 知 心 好 友 。
另 一 方 面 , 我 更 目 睹 一 個 「 不 斷 轉 變 」 的 中 國 。 例 如 在 1992 年 設 計 初
期 , 地 庫 停 車 場 的 原 意 是 用 以 停 泊 單 車 的 , 後 來 修 改 為 電 單 車 , 再 當 項 目 於
1996 年 落 成 時 , 卻 已 改 成 為 停 泊 汽 車 而 設 ! 同 樣 地 , 電 影 院 由 「 老 式 」 的 北
京 戲 院 演 變 至 「 大 銀 幕 」 電 影 院 , 再 進 而 改 建 為 「 迷 你 」 戲 院 , 反 映 社 會 正
在 不 斷 變 化 。
世 界 瞬 息 萬 變 , 浸 大 作 為 一 所 大 學 , 在 與 時 並 進 的 同 時 , 仍 能 一 直 堅 守
其 核 心 價 值 和 使 命 , 讓 我 尤 其 欣 賞 。 我 們 必 須 在 「 把 握 機 遇 、 積 極 進 取 」,
與 「 穩 步 固 守 、 持 盈 保 泰 」 之 間 取 得 平 衡 , 而 這 將 會 是 浸 大 在 未 來 面 對 的 最
大 挑 戰 。

My project “Preservation for the Documentation of Chinese
Christianity”, which attracted the attention of the committee,
was a collaboration with Yale University Divinity School Library.
This idea for the project was initiated in 2008 when I was in
charge of the Special Collections and Archives Section. From
time to time, people looking for materials about the history of
Christianity in China would contact us. However, we were unable
to provide them with adequate primary resources. This urged me
to endeavour to enrich our collections. Having understood that it
was unfeasible to request organisations to donate their invaluable
collections, the idea of borrowing from them for digitisation
popped up in my mind. The objective was to preserve these
materials and through digitisation provide more readers with access to them. I then prepared
a proposal to apply for funding from Yale University Library, and eventually the proposal went
through.
Under this project, HKBU Library took charge of liaising with libraries and Christian
religious bodies in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, borrowing archival materials, books,
periodicals and documents on Chinese Christianity from them. After scanning the materials,
we passed the digital files to Yale University to convert them to microfilm. Some of the old
materials were very precious as they were published in the late Qing Dynasty and early years
of the Republic of China. What’s more, most of them were out of print and non-commercial
publications. Upon completion of the first project in early 2012, we were thrilled to get a
proposal from Yale University Divinity School Library for a 10-year collaboration.
I wish that one day all the materials could be uploaded to an online platform so that
people all over the world could enjoy free use of them for leisure reading, teaching and research.

教 在 華 歷 史 的 文 獻 , 而 我 們 卻 往 往 無 法 提 供 足 夠 的 原 始 資 料 , 驅 使 我 產 生 增 加 館 藏 的 強 烈 意 慾 。
由 於 深 明 要 求 團 體 捐 贈 珍 藏 不 太 可 行 , 遂 構 思 先 向 他 們 借 用 , 再 將 資 料 數 碼 化 , 以 保 存 罕 有 文 獻
的 同 時 , 讓 更 多 人 能 夠 查 閱 相 關 資 料 。 就 此 我 便 撰 寫 了 一 份 詳 盡 的 計 劃 書 , 申 請 耶 魯 大 學 圖 書 館
的 資 助 , 並 得 以 成 功 !
在 此 文 獻 保 存 計 劃 中 , 浸 大 圖 書 館 負 責 尋 找 中 國 、 香 港 、 澳 門 和 台 灣 的 圖 書 館 及 基 督 宗 教 團
體 , 向 他 們 商 借 書 籍 、 期 刊 及 檔 案 等 華 人 基 督 教 文 獻 , 並 於 掃 瞄 後 把 電 子 圖 像 交 由 耶 魯 大 學 製 作
縮 微 膠 卷 。 部 份 文 獻 年 代 遠 久 , 屬 清 末 民 初 年 代 的 出 版 , 大 部 份 更 是 絕 版 或 非 商 業 刊 物 , 因 此 十
分 珍 貴 。2012 年 初 完 成 首 個 項 目 後 , 我 們 更 喜 獲 耶 魯 大 學 神 學 院 圖 書 館 主 動 提 議 合 作 十 年 。
我 的 願 望 是 將 來 有 一 天 , 所 有 資 料 能 夠 上 載 到 一 個 網 上 平 台 , 供 全 球 的 人 士 免 費 作 消 閒 閱
讀 、 教 學 及 研 究 之 用 。

The Academic Registry (AR) and the Office of Information Technology (ITO) collaborated
on this project with the aim of achieving a smooth transition for undergraduate admissions
under the new academic structure.
“We had frequent meetings with external parties such as the Education Bureau, UGC,
JUPAS Office, and sister institutions as well as internally with various Departments, committees
and the 3-3-4 taskforce,” says Edith of AR. “Then, we formulated policies and liaised with ITO
to design a new system that could handle the double cohort smoothly and efficiently.” ITO’s
mandate was to deliver a platform that could integrate with the JUPAS Office’s new system and
accommodate the large number of applications due to the double cohort.
The tight schedule was a major challenge. As there was no precedent, there were many
ad hoc changes. “Since the Diploma of Secondary Education qualification was new, academics
took time to settle on the assessment criteria,” says Celia of ITO. “Also, we had to align with the
development schedule of the JUPAS Office’s new system.” Edith adds that communication with
different stakeholders, internal and external, was also challenging.
“AR approached the programme officers for their requirements first,” says Celia. “As we’ve
been working together for so long, AR knows our limitations so when the requirements came
to us, they were workable. We also prioritised our tasks, working on other aspects while we
waited for the requirements and the JUPAS Office to confirm their specifications.” The two
offices are now working together again to design an enhanced non-JUPAS system for the 2014
admission.
“Mutual understanding and sharing are always very important, which can be further
enhanced through internal discussions. We work with ITO together like one unit, sharing the
same goal,” Edith says. “We are very proud of and grateful to our team members for working
around the clock without complaint.”

均 需 要 臨 時 作 出 改 動 。 資 訊 科 技 處 的 唐 若 詩 表 示 :「 由 於 香 港 中 學
文 憑 考 試 是 新 設 的 , 校 方 決 定 評 估 準 則 需 時 ; 再 者 , 我 們 亦 需 配 合
大 學 聯 合 招 生 處 發 展 新 系 統 的 時 間 表 等 。」 梁 慧 兒 補 充 說 , 與 校 內
和 校 外 的 不 同 持 份 者 溝 通 亦 甚 具 挑 戰 性 。
「 教 務 處 會 先 了 解 項 目 主 任 的 要 求 。」 唐 若 詩 表 示 。「 而 因 為
我 們 與 教 務 處 的 同 事 已 共 事 多 年 , 他 們 較 明 白 資 訊 科 技 處 的 限 制 ,
所 以 提 出 的 要 求 都 是 可 行 的 。 我 們 亦 按 工 作 的 緩 急 先 後 , 在 等 待 項
目 要 求 和 大 學 聯 合 招 生 處 的 詳 細 計 劃 時 , 進 行 其 他 範 疇 的 工 作 。」
現 時 教 務 處 與 資 訊 科 技 處 正 再 度 合 作 , 為 2014 年 度 非 聯 招 收 生 程 序
設 計 一 個 更 完 善 的 系 統 。
梁 慧 兒 說 互 相 了 解 和 彼 此 分 享 十 分 重 要 , 並 可 透 過 多 次 內 部 集
體 研 討 來 增 進 溝 通 。「 教 務 處 與 資 訊 科 技 處 猶 如 同 屬 一 個 部 門 般 合
作 無 間 , 大 家 目 標 一 致 。」 她 說 。「 我 們 衷 心 感 謝 組 員 任 勞 任 怨 ,
日 以 繼 夜 地 工 作 , 並 以 他 們 為 榮 。」

This project stretched over a prolix five to six years. As the Academic
and Administration Building (AAB) was planned to serve different functions
and house many facilities, we had to meet the diverse requirements of all
the administrative and academic departments. This was indeed challenging
as it was no easy task to consolidate and accommodate the detailed
requirements and specifications. Having collected suggestions from various
departments, we had to forward them accurately and promptly to the
architects and the teams concerned. When drawings were subsequently
prepared, we then submitted them to the Government for approval.
Communications with all the relevant parties were rather complicated and
there were the inevitable and unpredictable obstacles in the construction
work afterwards.
Despite the hardship we were very pleased to see the completion
of AAB, providing our colleagues and students with a pleasant working
and learning environment. I was most impressed by my teammates’
wholehearted commitment to the project. Though we might not have had a
wealth of experience in projects like this one, each and every one of us gave
our best to accomplish the task and was willing to take on a great deal of
extra work. All my teammates had a heavy workload especially during the
two peak periods in preparation for the Buildings Department’s inspection
and the moving-in stage. Their perseverance despite being exhausted really
touched me.

迎 合 種 種 要 求 和 規 格 並 不 容 易 , 牽 涉 極 多 的 細 節 和 繁 瑣 事 宜 , 過 程 充 滿 挑
戰 。 在 收 集 各 方 意 見 後 , 我 們 需 要 把 相 關 訊 息 準 確 地 轉 達 給 建 築 師 和 有 關
團 隊 落 實 跟 進 , 然 後 將 完 成 之 圖 則 送 交 政 府 批 核 , 期 間 的 溝 通 程 序 也 是 十
分 複 雜 。 再 者 , 在 建 築 過 程 中 亦 難 免 會 遇 上 無 法 預 計 的 阻 滯 。
縱 使 整 個 項 目 十 分 艱 巨 , 看 見 大 樓 最 終 能 順 利 落 成 啟 用 , 同 事 和 同 學
能 夠 享 用 良 好 的 工 作 和 學 習 環 境 , 我 們 都 感 到 十 分 滿 足 。 過 程 中 , 我 感 受
最 深 的 是 同 事 的 全 情 投 入 。 雖 然 大 家 過 往 未 必 有 相 關 的 工 作 經 驗 , 但 每 一
位 均 能 盡 心 盡 力 , 毫 不 介 懷 地 應 付 大 量 額 外 工 作 , 尤 其 在 兩 個 工 作 高 峰
期 , 包 括 屋 宇 署 查 驗 大 樓 的 準 備 和 「 入 伙 」 階 段 , 各 同 事 在 沉 重 的 工 作 壓
力 下 , 依 然 堅 持 下 來 , 教 我 非 常 感 動 。
This is a collaborative project between the Library and the School of Chinese
Medicine (SCM) that was initiated in 2005 when Prof Zhao Zhongzhen from SCM
was working on the Chinese Medicine Specimen Database for the SCM Chinese
Medicine Specimen Center.
The subject professor provided authentic data to ensure the quality of
information, and librarians used their information management skills to build a
user-friendly searchable database and present quality information to users in an
organised way.
Building on the experience of that first database, the Library and faculty
member Dr Chen Hubiao of SCM joined hands again to develop the Medicinal
Plant Images Database and the recent Chinese Medicinal Material Images
Database, which are more refined with an enhanced search function. The Data
Link function links knowledge across the subject courses. We aim to produce
English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese versions for all these databases,
though this would take more time as translation and proofreading of the Chinese
medicine information are never easy.
The project benefits the teaching and learning of Chinese medicine,
enabling instructors to enhance their teaching pedagogy via online
demonstration and students to revise what they have learned anywhere and
anytime. Since it is open for public access, it also facilitates knowledge transfer
and the promotion of Chinese medicine to the world. The Medicinal Plant Images
Database has already recorded over a million page views since January 2012, with
viewers from around 169 countries and places.
The Award is a recognition of our efforts, especially as all the team members
have been working beyond our normal duties to make the project a success.
However, the project has not ended, as we have received another Teaching
Development Grant and will be working on the Phytochemical Images Database.

有 了 這 次 經 驗 後 , 圖 書 館 和 中 醫 藥 學 院 的 陳 虎 彪 博 士 再 度 合 作 , 先 後 建 立 了 更
完 善 的 「 藥 用 植 物 圖 像 數 據 庫 」 和 「 中 藥 材 圖 像 數 據 庫 」, 並 建 立 跨 庫 鏈 接 功 能 ,
同 時 能 夠 顯 示 數 據 間 和 學 科 間 知 識 的 鏈 接 。 此 外 , 儘 管 把 中 藥 知 識 翻 譯 成 英 文 殊 不
簡 單 及 費 時 , 我 們 也 致 力 開 發 英 語 和 繁 、 簡 體 字 版 本 。

In the summer heat, many of us find ourselves reaching for
a can of iced tea or cola. Before you trash that can, you might be
interested to know that aluminum cans could be turned into nice
and practical gift items in just a few simple steps.
The Task Force on Sustainable Campus recently invited
Ms Theresa Chan from Elder Academy to teach our colleagues how
to transform an aluminum can at the BU HOUR 1300 – Aluminum
Cans Craftsman Workshop. You will be surprised to see how easy it
is to make a small basket. First of all, you need an aluminum can,
a cutting nipper, a pair of scissors and a bamboo stick; then simply
follow the steps below:

According to the Environmental Protection Department, an
average of about 15 tonnes of aluminum cans was disposed
of every day in 2011. To reduce waste, please bring your own
water instead of consuming canned drinks. It is not only more
environmentally friendly but also healthier and a more effective
way of cooling down!

Forms related to “continue”
Question: How many forms of the word “continue” are there and what is
their usage When and how should I use the different forms of “continue”
such as “continue”, “continuous”, “continual”, “continued”, “continuing”,
“continuation”, etc
Answer: The other forms related to the word continue are adverbs such
as continuously and continually. Continue has three patterns: (1) continue
doing something. For example, She continued writing her report while
listening to music. (2) continue with something. For example, She continued
with her report while listening to music. (3) continue to do something. For
example, She continued to write her report while listening to music.
Noteworthy is the usage of the adjectives continuous, continual and
continued. Let me use support for illustration. All the three can be used
before support but the meanings are slightly different. Continuous /
continual support emphasise non-stopping or without interruption.
However, continual can only be put before a noun. For
example, we cannot say His support is continual. Besides, continual
can indicate actions that occur repeatedly, but with intervals of
interruption. For example, The sports meet was spoilt by continual
rain in June. It means the rain is frequent and recurrent but not
continuous.
Unlike the two, continued support implies unchanged. For this
reason, people often say We look forward to your continued support/
cooperation. A frequent mistake is to use continuous for something
that happens at regular intervals. For example, HKBU has held a
Christmas party continuously (compare annually) since 1993.

After graduating from HKBU about a year ago, I took up the position of Resident
Coordinator of CL Soong Hall, which has offered me a range of challenging duties.
I often joke that one of my duties is similar to that of a senior security guard. In
case a resident student violates the rule that visitors must leave by 11 pm, I have to
follow up, and if necessary, may even need to discipline the student. Sometimes I also
play the role of a counsellor. If I see a resident student frowning or wearing a long
face, I will proactively talk to him or her and offer appropriate help if needed. Should
the problem be serious, I will turn to the Counselling and Development Centre for
professional follow-up. As part of my routine, I have weekly meetings with the Hall
Tutors, who are residing undergraduates. I also work closely with the Resident Master
and my colleagues in the Student Accommodation Section to plan activities such as
orientation camps, hall cleaning competitions, and the like.
Although my official work hours are from 9 am to 6 pm, as I am required to reside
in the Hall, I do not have a clear-cut off-duty time. During the academic year, there
were students knocking on my door at midnight, and my phone has rung with a call
for help just as I was about to fall asleep. There were also times when resident students
felt sick in the wee hours and I had to accompany them to the hospital immediately.
Ever since I took up this post, I can only go home once a week to have dinner
with my family. However, I find it obligatory to reside in the Hall to handle occasional
emergencies that might arise.
What makes me the happiest in this job is developing good relations with
resident students. I was deeply touched when they dropped by to chat with me before
moving out, and some even sent me thank you cards towards the end of the academic
year. In fact, as we are of a similar age, growing up together through mutual support is
a valuable experience.

The Hong Kong Baptist University School of
Chinese Medicine – Lui Seng Chun revitalisation
project won the “2012 Special Architectural Award
– Heritage & Adaptive Re-use” by The Hong Kong
Institute of Architects (HKIA), successfully beating
22 entries in the same category to become one
of the 11 winning projects in the HKIA Annual
Awards 2012.
「 香 港 浸 會 大 學 中 醫 藥 學 院 ─ 雷 生 春 堂 」 的 活 化
歷 史 建 築 項 目 獲 香 港 建 築 師 學 會 選 為 「2012 年 度
主 題 建 築 獎 ── 文 物 建 築 」 組 別 的 得 獎 作 品 , 成
功 從 該 組 別 的 22 個 參 賽 作 品 中 脫 穎 而 出 , 成 為 年
度 獲 表 揚 的 11 個 得 獎 作 品 之 一 。
The University signed a memorandum of
collaboration with China Academy of Chinese
Medical Sciences on 24 May under which
the two institutions will collaborate on joint
research, publishing research findings, nurturing
postgraduate students and organising academic
conferences.

The School of Chinese Medicine launched the
Chinese Medicinal Material Images Database, the
first of its kind in Hong Kong. The database has
photographs of and detailed information about
over 420 crude drugs commonly used in Chinese
medicine and is linked to the Medicinal Plant
Images Database which was also set up by the
School.
中 醫 藥 學 院 推 出 全 港 首 個 「 中 藥 材 圖 像 數 據 庫 」
, 收 錄 了 420 多 種 常 用 中 藥 材 的 圖 像 和 詳 盡 文 字 資

Visual Arts alumnus Mr Jims Lam won the
prestigious Hong Kong Art Prize 2013. Mr Lam
was awarded a prize of HK$80,000 for his work
Beacon 〈Sheung Wan Hours - 01:05〉. His work was
selected from among 163 entries.
視 覺 藝 術 院 林 志 恆 校 友 憑 著 畫 作 《Beacon〈Sheung
Wan Hours - 01:05〉》 在 本 年 度 香 港 藝 術 獎 中 奪 得
「 香 港 藝 術 大 獎 」, 於 合 共 163 份 參 賽 作 品 中 脫 穎

Prof Chen Feng of the Department of Government
and International Studies, and Prof Emilie Yeh of the
Academy of Film, were each awarded funding for
their research projects from the Chiang Ching-kuo
Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange,
while Dr Chu Yin-wah, Associate Professor of
Sociology, was granted funding to organise a
conference.

Mr Tang Kim-fai, Senior Lecturer of the Department
of Physical Education, scooped a gold medal in
the 60-year-old group pole vault competition at
the 2013 Spring Chinese Taipei Master Athletics
Championships by breaking a record that had held
for 17 years.

Sophia Fu (International Journalism, Year 3) of the
Department of Journalism won a five-year full
scholarship from Northwestern University in the US
to pursue a PhD in Communication Studies from
the next academic year. She will specialise in Media,
Technology and Society Research.

The research team of Dr Li Min, Associate Professor
of the School of Chinese Medicine, collaborated with
the group of Dr Yue Zhenyu from the Department
of Neurology and Neuroscience, Icahn School of
Medicine at Mount Sinai, USA, on a research project
entitled “NRBF2, a novel Beclin1-PI3K-III complex
component, regulates autophagy and prevents ER
stress-induced toxicity”. The project received the Best
Poster Award at the European Molecular Biological
Organisation International Conference in Norway.
