This two‐day course is an overview of interventions<br />

that medical‐surgical nurses use to<br />

promote quality of life for their clients. Using<br />

the nursing process to enhance physical and<br />

psychological well‐being in clients and their<br />

significant others is inherent in the role of the<br />

medical‐surgical nurse.<br />

include practice exam questions. For those<br />

not taking the test, the course provides an<br />

excellent review of the body systems and<br />

nursing interventions used as well as objective<br />

and subjective data to gather.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Objectives<br />

Through comprehensive lecture and discussion,<br />

students will be able to:<br />

• Describe techniques for preparing for a<br />

<strong>Medical</strong>‐<strong>Surgical</strong> <strong>Certification</strong> exam.<br />

• Relate the pathophysiologic basis of<br />

various disease states to the nursing<br />

assessment, planning, implementation<br />

and evaluation necessary.<br />

• Identify outcome criteria and evaluative<br />

criteria used by nurses to determine the<br />

effectiveness of nursing care of various<br />

<strong>Medical</strong>‐<strong>Surgical</strong> patients.<br />

• Outline the legal, ethical and professional<br />

responsibilities inherent in being a Med‐<br />

Surg nurse caring for a variety of patients.<br />

Speaker:<br />

Caroline Ashman, MSN, RN, CMSRN<br />

Caroline is currently a Charge Nurse at Emory Eastside<br />

Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She has been an RN for<br />

24 years, and is certified as a medical‐surgical nurse<br />

by MSNCB. She was a Clinical Educator for three<br />

years and an independent presenter for PESI Healthcare,<br />

traveling extensively presenting a seminar<br />

called “Current Trends, Treatments, and Issues”. She<br />

received her BSN from Thomas Edison State College<br />

in Trenton, NJ and her initial nursing education from<br />

the University of Wolverhampton, England. Caroline<br />

has worked in a variety of settings in hospitals as well<br />

as a Sales Trainer and Nurse Advisor to the<br />

pharmaceutical industry. She moved to the U.S. in<br />

1991.<br />

Attendance and Meals<br />

Students must arrive at North Austin <strong>Medical</strong> Center by<br />

7:45 AM each day for registration.<br />

Continental breakfast and coffee will be served both<br />

mornings (lunch is on your own). A cafeteria is located<br />

onsite.<br />

CE Information<br />

This educational activity is being co‐provided by the<br />

Academy of <strong>Medical</strong>‐<strong>Surgical</strong> Nurses (AMSN) and<br />

Anthony J. Jannetti (AJJ).<br />

AJJ is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing<br />

education by the American Nurses Credentialing<br />

Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC‐COA).<br />

AJJ is a Provider approved by the California Board of<br />

Registered <strong>Nursing</strong>. Provider Number CEP 5387.<br />

Licensees in the state of CA must retain this certificate<br />

for 4 years after the CE activity is completed.<br />
