Identification to Species Level<br />

The identification <strong>of</strong> isolates to species level may be carried out<br />

using either laboratory-based biochemical test schemes or commercial<br />

identification kits with accompanying databases. Although<br />

species-level identification <strong>of</strong> non-β-haemolytic streptococci is not<br />

routinely carried out in many clinical laboratories, this may be<br />

deemed necessary for suspected pneumococcal infection, isolates<br />

obtained from deep-seated abscesses, specimens from endocarditis<br />

or where pure cultures have been grown. Differential tests for the<br />

identification <strong>of</strong> non-β-haemolytic streptococci are summarized in<br />

Tables 2.9–2.13.
