FootSteps for Youth New Beginnings LifeWorks’ unique model of housing programs (New Beginnings, Bread & Roses, Living Our Potential & Supportive Housing) coupled with a Life Long Learning approach to service delivery, provides extensive learning opportunities to help our participants acquire or improve the skills they need to succeed in fostering and maintaining self-sufficiency. New Beginnings – Families Overcoming Homelessness Our Center for Children and their Families housed 52 families with 88 children this year. All 88 children received education, recreation and advocacy services through our FootSteps Program. Jillian: I came to St. Luke’s LifeWorks when my baby was three weeks old. Before I started going to Life Long Learning I had never thought about a career; I thought I was too old to go back to school and it was too late for me to learn. Life Long Learning really opened my eyes; they helped me set goals and let me see that I could make my dreams a reality. I thought I was really bad at math so they got me a tutor and now I find that I really like it. I have received my high school diploma and I am looking forward to going on and getting a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Life Long Learning really helped me to believe in myself. Now I can be a great role model for my son. 4 New Beginnings – Women Overcoming Homelessness This year LifeWorks provided temporary housing for 79 women living in Women’s Housing. 5 Bobbie: I was always used to taking care of everything on my own and making sure my son was provided for.After I lost my job and could no longer afford my rent I came to St. Luke’s LifeWorks. LifeWorks has provided me with the security and support I need to get back on my feet. I have two jobs now and I’m working with my Life Coach as I pay off my debt. She stays on board with me while I take care of one thing at a time. Now that my son is in the Armed Forces I am focused on what I want to do. I am going back to school and I would like to learn to play the piano and travel.
Supportive Housing & Living Our Potential Bread & Roses In addition to helping people exit homelessness through our Life Long Learning delivery of services, St. Luke’s LifeWorks is dedicated to the creation of supportive housing for individuals and families as the ultimate answer to the problem of homelessness. Our five affordable housing sites provided homes for 67 people and three families with six children. James: I was in the men’s shelter fighting my bad habits and not earning enough to be on my own when I was offered a unit at Metcalf House. Through Metcalf House I learned about the Life Long Learning services and began taking some workshops and computer classes. It really opened up my eyes and helped me become computer literate. I also formulated a plan for a job search. I am grateful for the opportunity I have been given here to change my life for the better. Because of LifeWorks I am motivated and encouraged to update my resume and find a job that suits me. 6 Christine: I came up from Florida when I ran out of money and couldn’t find work. I stayed with family and friends who thought there was something wrong with me because I had such extreme highs and lows. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and then the DuBois Center put me in touch with St. Luke’s LifeWorks. I had nothing; no job, no money and no hope and I was living out of my car. When the people in the Gilead program came through with housing for me I just couldn’t believe it, I thought it was a miracle. The Life Coach at Gilead came and talked with me once a week to make sure I was doing okay. Then they told me about an internship through Life Long Learning. I began working at the xChange Store earlier this year and I still volunteer there. My life is much more stable and I really enjoy where I am and what I am doing. I’m looking forward to going back to school. LifeWork’s Bread & Roses program provided housing for 30 single adults and four families living with HIV/AIDS this year. 7 Cedric: I was an addict for 27 years and I came to St. Luke’s LifeWorks after completing treatment at Liberation House. In the Bread and Roses program I learned to accept people where they’re at and I was encouraged to work on my own character. The Life Coaches provided the time and resources I needed to work on myself. In Life Long Learning, the educator was very patient and helped me learn the basic fundamentals of computers. As my confidence grew, I decided to take an HIV educator course at the Yale School of Nursing. The speaking engagements that LifeWorks helped me obtain and my community activism led me to a part-time job at the Stamford Health Department. My future plans are to return to school and secure full-time employment.
