LifeWorks Highlights in
2007/2008:
• 317 adults were served by
St. Luke’s LifeWorks this past year.
• 101 children benefitted from
our programs.
• LifeWorks Centralized Referral
responded to 3,127 phone calls
from people needing help.
• 118 people who moved into
independent housing after
participating in our programs
have been able to maintain that
housing for more than one year.
• 4,474 volunteers came from all
over Fairfield County (including
Greenwich, New Canaan,Wilton,
Norwalk, Darien & Stamford), to
give 15,000 hours of service to
facilitate the LifeWorks mission.

where people learn a living.
In 2007/2008 St. Luke’s LifeWorks delivered on our mission.Thanks to
our remarkable staff, generous donors and dedicated volunteers, LifeWorks
helped 418 people who are affected by homelessness, living with
HIV/AIDS, or recovering from mental illness, learn to make their lives
work better. LifeWorks provided emergency and supportive housing,
life-long learning, and the emotional support our participants need to
attain and maintain self-sufficiency.

A Message From the Board President and the Executive Director
So, what do you think of when you hear the name St. Luke’s LifeWorks –
a hospital? Church? School? Well you may know better but others think
we are the “best kept secret!”
This “Best Kept Secret” distinction was recently granted to LifeWorks as
an award bestowed upon us by Moffly Publications, owners of Greenwich,
Westport and Darien-New Canaan Magazines. Mayor Dannel Malloy, City of
Stamford, CT nominated us. He stated “There is a common misconception
that homelessness is not a problem in our area because street people
are few and far between. Much of the reason for that is because St. Luke’s
LifeWorks is quietly and inconspicuously doing its job.”
Many people are often amazed to learn that LifeWorks provides educational
opportunities, housing and support services to people overcoming
homelessness in 10 locations throughout Fairfield County. We provide
permanent solutions for families, single adults, people living with HIV/AIDS
and/or recovering from mental illness to achieve greater self-sufficiency.
Homelessness is not a new social phenomenon. It requires innovative
solutions. LifeWorks is such a solution.This annual report shares how
we have been that solution over the last year.
Teaming together, employees and volunteers (15,000 hours this past
year) have been the arms and legs in making the solution come alive.
Our volunteers truly make an impact. People like Katie Rawden who
helps our children with their homework, and Rick Napier who mentors
adults in our Gilead program. We have groups such as Women of Vision
who read and do art projects with our children and organizations like
Union Baptist Church who cook and serve meals for participants at our
Woodland Campus. Corporations like PricewaterhouseCoopers who
surprise our participants with freshly painted bedrooms and bathrooms
and XL America that beautifies the landscape at Gilead House each spring.
We are grateful to all of the donors and volunteers who join us in helping
the people we walk with—day in and day out.
We dedicate our “Best Kept Secret” award to you. Your “quiet and
inconspicuous” gifts allow us to continue to make the dreams of
LifeWorks’ participants come true.

In Honor of Our Volunteers
No one is more cherished in this world than someone
who lightens the burden of another. ThankYou. Author Unknown
Katie Rawden came to St. Luke’s LifeWorks as a sophomore from Darien
High School, asking what she could do to help. She took the initiative
and became dedicated to improving the lives of children experiencing
homelessness through the development of Homework Helpers. With a
group of her high school friends, these volunteers meet on a weekly basis
to help the children at St. Luke’s LifeWorks understand and complete their
homework. As a result of Katie's leadership, children’s report cards show
improved academic achievement, and they relate better with each
other–both significant challenges for children who are homeless. Katie
received a Light a Fire award from Moffly Publications this year when she
was recognized as Fairfield County’s “Extraordinary Teenage Volunteer.”

Rick Napier joined St. Luke’s LifeWorks as a volunteer in November, 2005.
In the period since then he has given over 2,800 hours to the agency
averaging 30 hours per week. Rick has been passionate in his support of our
mission to provide educational opportunities, coaching/mentoring and
housing for individuals and families facing homelessness, recovering from
mental illness or living with HIV/AIDS.
Rick’s volunteer efforts include doing everything from developing databases
for making our Holiday Gift Collection run smoother to mentoring people
like Mark Evans in this photo with Rick on the right.Rick’s direct involvement
with over 100 program participants has directly impacted their ability
to move from homelessness to self-sufficiency. In 2007 Rick received a
Volunteer Recognition Award from the Voluntary Action Center of
Mid-Fairfield.

FootSteps for Youth New Beginnings
LifeWorks’ unique model of housing programs (New Beginnings, Bread
& Roses, Living Our Potential & Supportive Housing) coupled with a Life
Long Learning approach to service delivery, provides extensive learning
opportunities to help our participants acquire or improve the skills they
need to succeed in fostering and maintaining self-sufficiency.
New Beginnings –
Families Overcoming Homelessness
Our Center for Children and their Families
housed 52 families with 88 children this year.
All 88 children received education, recreation
and advocacy services through our FootSteps
Program.
Jillian:
I came to St. Luke’s LifeWorks
when my baby was three weeks
old. Before I started going to Life
Long Learning I had never thought
about a career; I thought I was too
old to go back to school and it was
too late for me to learn. Life Long
Learning really opened my eyes;
they helped me set goals and let
me see that I could make my dreams
a reality. I thought I was really bad
at math so they got me a tutor and
now I find that I really like it. I have
received my high school diploma
and I am looking forward to going
on and getting a Bachelor’s Degree
in Accounting. Life Long Learning
really helped me to believe in
myself. Now I can be a great role
model for my son.

New Beginnings –
Women Overcoming Homelessness
This year LifeWorks provided temporary
housing for 79 women living in Women’s
Housing.

Bobbie:
I was always used to taking care of
everything on my own and making
sure my son was provided for.After
I lost my job and could no longer
afford my rent I came to St. Luke’s
LifeWorks. LifeWorks has provided
me with the security and support
I need to get back on my feet. I
have two jobs now and I’m working
with my Life Coach as I pay off my
debt. She stays on board with me
while I take care of one thing at a
time. Now that my son is in the
Armed Forces I am focused on
what I want to do. I am going back
to school and I would like to learn
to play the piano and travel.

Supportive Housing & Living Our Potential Bread & Roses
In addition to helping people exit homelessness through our Life Long
Learning delivery of services, St. Luke’s LifeWorks is dedicated to the
creation of supportive housing for individuals and families as the ultimate
answer to the problem of homelessness. Our five affordable housing sites
provided homes for 67 people and three families with six children.
James:
I was in the men’s shelter fighting
my bad habits and not earning
enough to be on my own when I
was offered a unit at Metcalf House.
Through Metcalf House I learned
about the Life Long Learning services
and began taking some workshops
and computer classes. It really
opened up my eyes and helped me
become computer literate. I also
formulated a plan for a job search.
I am grateful for the opportunity
I have been given here to change
my life for the better. Because of
LifeWorks I am motivated and
encouraged to update my resume
and find a job that suits me.

Christine:
I came up from Florida when I
ran out of money and couldn’t
find work. I stayed with family and
friends who thought there was
something wrong with me because
I had such extreme highs and lows. I
was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder
and then the DuBois Center put me
in touch with St. Luke’s LifeWorks. I
had nothing; no job, no money and
no hope and I was living out of my
car. When the people in the Gilead
program came through with housing
for me I just couldn’t believe it, I
thought it was a miracle. The Life
Coach at Gilead came and talked
with me once a week to make sure
I was doing okay. Then they told
me about an internship through
Life Long Learning. I began working
at the xChange Store earlier this
year and I still volunteer there. My
life is much more stable and I really
enjoy where I am and what I am
doing. I’m looking forward to
going back to school.
LifeWork’s Bread & Roses program provided housing for 30 single adults
and four families living with HIV/AIDS this year.

Cedric:
I was an addict for 27 years and I
came to St. Luke’s LifeWorks after
completing treatment at Liberation
House. In the Bread and Roses
program I learned to accept people
where they’re at and I was encouraged
to work on my own character.
The Life Coaches provided the
time and resources I needed to
work on myself. In Life Long
Learning, the educator was very
patient and helped me learn the
basic fundamentals of computers.
As my confidence grew, I decided
to take an HIV educator course at
the Yale School of Nursing. The
speaking engagements that LifeWorks
helped me obtain and my community
activism led me to a part-time job at
the Stamford Health Department. My
future plans are to return to school
and secure full-time employment.
