BASF and HKUST bring magic of chemistry to kids
‣ BASF Kids’ Lab: an international program letting kids 6-12 experience
science in a fun, engaging way
‣ Approximately 600 children to participate in the program in Hong Kong
‣ Safe, hands-on experiments investigate topics including ultraviolet light and
water purification
‣ Parents’ session helps bring families together through science
Hong Kong, China – May 7, 2013 – BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, and
the School of Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
(HKUST) will bring the magic of chemistry to children from the age of 6-12 through safe,
interactive experiments at BASF Kids’ Lab.
BASF Kids’ Lab is an interactive chemistry education program first launched at BASF’s
headquarters in Germany in 1997. The four-day BASF Kids’ Lab program runs from
June 26-29, 2013 and aims to ignite children’s interest in science, innovation and
sustainable development. HKUST students in chemistry or other scientific disciplines
will lead the sessions as coaches on-site for more than 600 children at the Hong Kong
Jockey Club Enterprise Center. Since the program began in the Asia Pacific region in
2003, more than 200,000 kids have participated.
Ultraviolet (UV) light investigation experiment
Through the UV light investigation experiment, kids will learn how to identify UV light
and how to make their own sunscreen. Using a UV detector, they will also learn how
the finished mixture is used to filter UV light penetration.
Along with the kids’ experiment sessions, this year, for the first time, parents can attend
a workshop on UV light investigation to learn more about the science of UV light.

Water purification experiment
In the water purification experiment, kids learn not only about the process of cleaning
water, but also about the value of clean water itself. Kids get to enjoy creating their own
dirty water, and then use chemistry to remove the solid and dissolved particles inside.
The experiment will demonstrate how waste water is purified in municipal facilities. With
the help of this hands-on experiment, kids also learn how to bring water conservation
back to their homes and schools.
Interested individuals can sign up from May 20 to June 14, 2013 to attend the public
session of BASF Kids’ Lab. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served
basis.
