PLAYER TO WATCH
After piling
up the most
points in
school
history
and cruising to
a 9-3 record last year,
the North Oldham
Mustangs are back to
the drawing board this
season
after losing a
couple of key weapons.
With quarterback
Cameron Renaud gradu-
ated and running back
Jacob Raymond out with a
torn ACL, Coach Billy
Martin will look to
a young stable of running
backs to fill the duos’ 23 rushing-touchdown
void.
Luckily for them, his team’s depth in
the backfield is a strength this season.
Seniors Josh Smith and Jake Evans and
junior Quentin Shea will fill that void in
more expanded roles in the run-oriented
attack. The trio combined for 1,431 rushing
yards and 11 scores in 2011.
The Mustangs welcome back three of
their starting offensive linemen from last
season, including Tanner Williams, a
four-year starter, and three-year starters
Collin Sanborn and RJ Condren. Senior
left tackle Caleb Kellogg returns but will
shift to fullback after dropping 35 pounds
in the offseason because of baseball.
On the defensive side, the Mustangs
look strong as they return two of their
top tacklers in senior linebacker Cody
Elbert and junior Will Steinfeld.
Though Elbert led the way with 70
stops for a team that held opponents to
just 1,638 yards rushing, Steinfeld held
his own, chipping in 68. Josh Smith will
play a large role on defense after contributing
53 tackles and a pair of fumble
recoveries last season.
Martin also returns their leading
ballhawk from 2011 in senior defensive
back Michael Choe, who intercepted two
passes in 2011.
Era Prediction: 8-4
TANNER WILLIAMS, SENIOR CENTER
CLAIM TO FAME: A four-year starter on the offensive line, Williams will
be looked to help open lanes for a new stable of running backs.

Though 2011 was a rough season
for the Oldham County football
team, things are looking up for
the Colonels after last year’s 2-9
finish as plenty of growth and added experience
should add up. Luckily for them, they
also have the personel to make that goal a
reality.
With eight starters back on both sides of
the ball, experience will be a strength.
On the offensive side of the ball, none will
be more important that senior quarterback
Brett Strnad, who returns to guide the spread
attack. Affectionately nicknamed Randall by
his teammates — alluding to former NFL
quarterback Randall Cunningham, who was
known more his legs than arm— Strnad
has made progress as a pocket passer this
offseason.
Coach Matt Brown has noticed.
“He looks so much better than last year,”
Brown said. “Last year was his first time as
a full time starter and he just looks more
comfortable with the offensive line. That
makes him feel much more confident in
himself, too.”
The team expects Strnad to carry a heavy
load during 2012 after missing half of last
season due to illness, but he isn’t the only
weapon in OC’s arsenal. Senior running
backs Jacob Taylor and Chris Caudill will
join Strnad in the backfield to ease the losses
of starters Cody Oldham, Garrett Wilder and
Kerry Smith to graduation.
They’ll also return four of their five starters
on the offensive line.
On the defensive side, the team’s biggest
challenge is replacing linebackers Steven Farrow
and Corbin Axtell. Brown thinks he may
have found a solution as seniors Cory Bryant
and Addison Deckard and juniors Zach Ball
and Chase Tindall will step in.
It will also help that the emergence of the
defensive line will l allow a shift to a 4-4 front.
Senior defensive lineman Mikey Caudill and
Justin Kroeger will play the biggest roles on
that unit.
“Last year, all these guys were small
sophomores and juniors,” Brown said. “Now,
they’ve kind of matured and have worked
hard in the weight room so they’re a lot
bigger, faster and more explosive. Hopefully,
we can be a very good run
stopping team.”
The Colonels also add another
weapon as junior Sean
Nuernberger gives OC its
first kicking threat since Jack
Weigel graduated in 2010.
— Greg Waddell
Those new players will
certainly get their chance as
in South’s run-first, run-second style,
Reed said his signal caller will help ease the load
put on Banks. Those two will also be looked to
As far as newcomers, Reed highlighted
TiCorian Williams as a potential change of
On the other side of the ball is where the
I
f a new season brings new
challenges, the North Oldham
Mustangs are learning
the hard way as the departure
of five key seniors has left the team
hurting in a couple of critical areas.
Their young team is undersized as
they take the field looking to build
on last season’s 11-8-3 finish.
But don’t feel too sorry for Coach
Ryan Frey and his boys. They don’t.
In fact, in Freys’ eyes, the team will
be just as strong, figuratively speaking,
with just as lofty goals — regular
season and tournament district titles.
The biggest different about last
year’s Mustangs and this year’s will
be the pace at which they play, Frey
said. Though they won’t have nearly
as much size, they should have plenty
more speed.
“We’ll be a much quicker team,”
Frey said, “and much more nimble.
We don’t have much size returning
but we’ll be a skillful team.”
They also bring back their most
potent goal scorer from a season ago
in senior Matt Dombrowsky, who returns
after picking up 20 goals from
his central midfield spot in 2011.
He was also the Mustang’s leading
distributor last season with 12 assists
to his name.
That could come in handy early
on as the team will break in a new
group of young starters across the
field. Three of those, Mason Smith,
Ben Stinebruner and Sam Kelly, are
no strangers to the team and clocked
extensive playing time as freshmen.
Smith will slide into a slot vacated
by Jordan Stump atop the 4-4-2 formation,
while Stinebruner will ease
the loss of outside back Isaac Zenter
on the back line and Kelly will play
a hybrid of those two, shuffling
between midfield and defense.
Regardless of who’s new and who’s
not, the team will once find itself in a
brutal race for the 29th district title.
After a restructuring over the
summer removed four teams from
the district, only North and South
Oldham and Oldham County remain
to fight it out.
For his money, Frey likes his
team’s chances. It’d be hard to blame
him.
County
Some teams rebuild, others
reload. The Oldham
County boys’ soccer
team typically falls into
the former category. Opening the
season with eight new starters, the
Colonels went on a tear last year,
cruising to a 15-7-4 record and an
undefeated district slate before capturing
an Eighth Region crown.
They’ll have their work cut out for
them to replicate that success after
graduating eight starters once again.
One important starter is senior
captain Jared Kemper, a second team
All-State selection in 2011, who will
lead the team once again. One thing
that will change will be the position
he plays. After handling the goal
scoring duties for the past two seasons,
Colonels Coach Brian Durbin
said Kemper will move to center
back, his natural position.
“He’s always been a defender but
we asked the last few years to play
out of position,” Durbin said. “He’s
a fantastic athlete and we wanted to
stay strong in the back, so we moved
him back there.”
That will play a big factor early
on as Kemper’s move bolters the defensive
back line to a team strength,
Durbin said, as he’ll team with
juniors Tanner Forrest and Justin
Nash to hassle opposing attacks.
“Defense has been our calling
card for the past several years,”
Durbin said. “Two years ago, we
were ranked third in the state in
defense and only gave up 17 goals.
Hopefully, that’s gonna be where we
are again. I’d like to be top five in
goals allowed.”
As far as how the Colonels will tack, senior Alejandro Quijada will
handle striker duties, while juniors
at-
Brendan Scott and Jonathan Huerta
will play as attacking midfielders.
trio scored in 2011.
That won’t affect the defense, however,
as Burke said chemistry within his
back line is better than it has ever been.
Junior center back Davis Ferriell will
anchor the defensive third this season.
That unit’s sturdiness should play a big
role early on as a new group of attackers
gets acclimated to shouldering the
scoring load.
Seniors Nathan Ball and Hunter
Lewis, who combined for three goals
and eight assists in 2011, will be the
leaders in that group as the Dragons
look to improve on last season’s 10-9
record. They seem to be off to a good
start as Burke noted that his team is
passing the ball better than it has in
years.
Of the varsity newcomers, sophomore
forward Christian Lister started
almost every game as a freshman and
scored three goals. He will, however, be
a more focal point of the offense this
year, teaming with fellow sophomore
Skylar Heinstein up top for a dangerous
one-two punch. Heinstein found
the back of the net twice as a frosh as
well.
Burke said the pair could be his
team’s breakout players.
“Those two guys will be the nucleus
of the new South attack,” he said.
“We’re going to count on Christian alot
this year and, with the departure of
two senior strikers, it kind of opens the
door for Skylar to step in as well. This
year, we’ll need Skylar to step up
and I look for him to have a good
season. He’s very capable of scoring
10 to 15 goals for us.”
Those two aren’t the only
sophomores who will see playing
time though, as Burke added
that as many as six could start
at times. Griffin Smith will
certainly be one of those as he
slides in to replace Ted Triche
in the goalbox.
Losing six starters during
an offseason is tough for
any program to face. It
gets even tougher when
the upcoming season features nine
games against preseason top-25
teams. But that’s the challenge the
North Oldham girls’ soccer team
faces as it takes the field this season
looking to build on last year’s 16-4-2
season.
To do so, they’ll need strong play
from a couple of key areas.
One of those, Coach Ann Revell
noted, will be the midfield where a
pair of seniors, Katie Stinebruner
and Sloane Costelle, will look to
provide steady hands to guide the
young team. Early on, that should be
a strength for the Lady Mustangs as
they attempt to build.
Another key area will be in the
goalbox as junior Emily men shifts in from outside
back.
Morse-
How those three
play will determine a
lot about how successful
the season will be, Revell l said.
“Emily is a lot of our team
defensively,” Revell said, “and then
(offensively with) Katie and Sloane, I
think all three of are going to be the
key components for us this season.”
Sophomore Hannah Causey will
also provide leadership from the
center back spot as well junior Taylor
Houfek after making big strides in
the offseason.
How will those changes affect the
district race Not much, Revell said.
In her eyes, all conventionality onality can
be thrown out the window when the
heat of the rivalries kick in. With re-
align-
ment shrinking
the pool to only North,
South Oldham and Oldham
County, it could be an interesting
year.
“This will be anybody’s district,”
Ruvell said. “We’re all so competitive
with each other so it’ll be interesting.
“I can’t even pick a favorite; we’re
all that close.”
Though the 2011 soccer
season ended with a
heartbreaking 2-1 loss
in the Eighth Region
championship game, 2012 is already
looking better for the Oldham County
girls’ soccer team. Returning eight
starters makes that possible.
A successful 3-0 march through
the Bluegrass State games is just the
beginning.
Junior midfielder Shelby Cohen
will play the biggest role for the team
this season after racking up seven
goals last year and teams with juniors
Hayla Ragland (eight goals) and Haley
Kemper (14 goals) to lead the Oldham
attack.
But OC said goodbye to a talented
trio of seniors in midfielder Whitney
Rumley and defenders Julia Vowels
and Shelby Rush.
The loss on the defensive side isn’t
as severe, however, as injuries during
last season allowed plenty of playing
time for the younger students.
There will be an initial adjustment
period though as the team learns to
play without Rush and Vowels.
“(They) were a big loss for us,” Head
Coach Dan Schulz said. “Those kids
were here for four years playing for us
and were a key part of our defense.”
Sophomores Abigail Stewart and
Kelsey Daley should provide big min-
utes for the Lady Colonels on defense.
Another sophomore, Allie Houk,
will miss the season after torn knee
ligaments ended her year before it
began. Houk, a talented midfielder,
played in all 22 games last season and
scored eight goals.
Overall, the team is young, deep
and talented, Schulz said. If they continue
to work hard, another district
crown should be in sight.
S
ometimes, looks can
ometim
be deceiving — the
South Oldham girls’
soccer team is finding
out how true that can be early
this season. On paper, the pro-
gram’s fortunes are looking up
after returning nine starters
from last year’s regional
semifinalist team, but the
problem is the two play-
ers they lose.
In addition to say-
ing goodbye to Sarah
Cummings, a talented
defender who is now
playing at Campbells-
ville University,
the team will try to
replace Marissa
Williams, Kentucky’s
reigning
Miss Soccer. Williams,
a Mississippi State signee, manned
the center midfield spot for South last season,
chipping in 15 goals and 14 assists.
That said, the offense won’t see much
of a drop with her departure, as Coach
Cy Tucker notes the girls have responded
admirably to the challenge.
Stephanie Rowland, the team’s leading
scorer in 2011 with 31 goals, returns to
lead the attack along with a handful of
other players who should see a rise in
production with the extra touches this
season will bring.
One area that requires some adjustment
is the passing game. Acting as the
team’s primary distributor last year, Williams
assisted on almost half of Rowland’s
goals, Tucker said.
The challenge now, will be replacing
that production. If the preseason is any
indication, that task will fall primarily to
three players, Kacie Hall (nine assists),
Abby Sobolewski (six assists), Rein Koch
(six assists), Tucker said.
Another big question mark facing
the team comes on the defensive side of
the ball. Though the Lady Dragons will
undoubtedly be able to rain goals on the
other net, how they’re able to protect their
own will be key.
That’s why Tucker highlighted junior
goalkeeper Maddie Malueg as one of the
most important players on this year’s
team. She recorded five shutouts a season
ago.
“I think goalkeeper is always a critical
position,” he said, “and Maddie has
improved leaps over last year. There are
just some things that were not part of
her skill set that are now. That’s gonna be
huge for us.”
Saying goodbye is
fairly difficult, but the
Oldham County boys’
golf team is getting
pretty good at it. After graduating
a combined 16 years of golf
experience in 2010, the Colonels
watched four more players move
on after last season. That will take
them into 2012 with a new roster
and plenty of new challenges.
Seven of the 13 players on the
roster are newcomers.
Team veterans Morgan Franklin,
Jacob Marcum, Steven Estes
and Stuart Jones will be expected
to carry the load after serving in
junior varsity roles last season.
After putting in a lot of practice in
the offseason, it’s obvious they’ve
grown a lot, Coach Allen Davis
said.
Still, more than just natural
talent, coachability may be this
group’s greatest strength.
“This group really has a desire
to get better,” Davis said. “They
work hard. I would go the intrinsic
route more so when describing
their strengths so than what we
do on the course, because
we’re going to take our lumps
early.”
As the season progresses,
that may be a different story
altogether.
“I wouldn’t want to play us at
the end of the year,” Davis said.
“We’re going to be good before
the year is out. I think this team
has a chance to be a special group
for the next couple of years if they
work hard.”
Sometimes having a short
memory can be a good
thing in sports. That’s
what the South Oldham
boys golf team is hoping anyways as
the Dragons lose senior Mack Van
Lenten to graduation.
Van Lenten, the only golfer from
last year’s squad to make the state
tournament, takes plenty of experience
with him.
Though he won’t be replaced easily,
the Dragons are hoping a solid
mix of returners and newcomers
can help ease the transition.
From that group, senior Billy
Rutledge and junior Nick Fowler
lead the way as the only players
from last year’s team, while Patrick
Aufree, Drew Froelich and Zack
Newman join the varisity squad for
the first time.
Though they’ll take their lumps
early, their ability to look forward, rd,
not back will help them navigate the
uncertain waters.
That has been a strength so far,
Rutledge said.
“When we have a bad hole, we
can usually shake it off pretty well
and are able to come back with a
good hole,” he said. “We’ve been
rebounding very well.”
They’ve also been adapting as
Carol Cooksey replaced Stephen
Carter as coach of the Dragons
before the season began. She is the
team’s third head coach in three e
years.
So far, she’s been a huge help,
Rutledge said.
“At first, it was a shock,” he said,
“ but she has been very vocal and
helped us to become more of a
team. She is really focused and has
helped us at practice and tourna-
ments.”
Still,
though the team
shows promise, delusions
of grandeur haven’t
run rampant in the
Dragons’ camp.
Playing in a tough region with
powerhouses like St. Xavier and
Trinity makes it tough to compete
on that level, Rutledge said, so the
team is focusing on a different tournament
right now — the Oldham
Cup.
A competition between the three
county schools, the Cup is similar
to the Ryder Cup in that it pits the
schools against each other in a three
day tournament on each others’
home courses.
Most years, Oldham
County head cross
country coach
Kirk Thomas
would feel pretty good about
returning five
of his team’s top
scorers from a
fourth-place finish
at state. But for now, he remains
cautiously optimistic about his
girls’ chances
in a stacked regional
picture.
With traditional powers As-
sumption and Sacred Heart
returning a majority of their
talent as well, it will be an up-
hill battle for his team in both
state and regional action.
“This is my eighth year coaching
and this is the most competitive
girls’ field that I’ve ever seen
in Kentucky,” Thomas said. “We’re
going to be working hard to move
up or even to hold ground because
there were some other great teams
right behind us.”
As they attempt to do so, they’ll
turn to junior Caroline Grogan
to lead them. Grogan, the top
finisher for the Lady Colonels at
the state meet (ninth), will look
to take over the title of top runner
from her sister, Margaret, who
has moved on to Samford to run
collegiately.
She’ll have plenty of help as the
cupboard is far from bare with
Hannah and Haley Mullins, Chelsea
Bear and Kati Heil returning.
Thomas notes that those four
are fairly even. That will play to
their advantage as they prepare to
make some noise this season.
“The closer (those next four
runners) are together in times,
the less points you get stuck in
between,” Thomas said. “We feel
like that’s our strength — that one
front runner and then a solid pack
of four coming in together.”
Some things always
seem to change and
others seem to stay the
same.
The latter is true for the South
Oldham girls’ cross country team
as Coach Stan Clark said he fully
expects his team to be top three in
the state when the state meet rolls
around.
One thing they will have to
do between now and then is stay
focused. That, and work as a team.
“For the girls, it’s all about
coming together at the right time
and realizing it takes a team effort
to do this,” Clark said, “Being not
just five girls or even seven girls,
but eight, nine or ten deep will be
key. They have stay focused and
work as a team to keep improving.
If you’re not improving, you’re
being caught by somebody.”
One challenge the team will
face is replacing graduated senior
Kami Orrender, a top-20 runner
at state. With a talented group of
other runners returning though,
including Keightley Dudgeon,
Grace Whitworth, Erin Wilson
and Alex Gilliland, that shouldn’t
be terribly difficult.
Those four won’t be the only
ones to keep an eye on though.
“There are several girls to
watch,” Clark said. “Really,
the entire team (has potential).
They’re very strong.”
It won’t take long to find
out.
CLAIM TO FAME: Adams will team with fellow senior Ally Hall and
A
year after watching
yea
rival South Old-
ham pick up their
fourth- straight girls’
cross country state champion-
ship, the North Oldham Lady
Mustangs will try to spoil the
Lady Dragons’ quest for state
this season
and hope to earn
some hardware of their own.
After finishing as the No.
2 Class 2A team last year
and returning plenty of
strong runners, they feel
that could be a very real
possibility.
Especially with the
offseason they’ve had
so far.
“Our girls have set their goals
high,” co-coach Theresa Phillips said.
“They want to do really well at region
and at state and they’ve been working
hard over the winter to achieve that.
They’re stepping up their games for
sure so I feel like we’re going to have a
very talented team and probably the
most talented, fastest team we’ve ever
had in my nine years coaching there.”
Though they did say goodbye to
Caitlyn Beyea, who finished No. 32
for North at state, the team returns a
majority of runners, including four of
last season’s top five.
Sophomore Marissa Lowe, the
teams’ top runner in 2011, will lead
the way, teaming with seniors Shelby
Adams and Ally Hall as centerpieces
for the Lady Mustangs.
They’ll also add senior Maggie
Fiorito, a transfer from Illinois, who
Phillips said will likely slide into the
top five. She is the newest piece in
already loaded roster of more than 10
quality runners.
That depth, Phillips said, is one of
the team’s strengths this season.
It certainly got a test early as
Lowe injured her foot in the team’s
first practice and will be sidelined
temporarily.
Losing an
all-state
runner is
never easy
— just ask Old-
ham County cross
country coach Kirk
Thomas.
Yet, that’s pre-
cisely what
he’ll
try to do when
his team takes
to their first
meet.
Of all the
uncertainties
facing the team, replacing Luke
Weishaar will be the most pressing.
After leading the cross country team
for duration of the season and capturing
a fifth place finish at the state meet,
Weishaar added to his collection with a
state title in the one-mile event for track
and field before moving on to Samford
University.
That’s far from the only problem,
however, as another three of the Colonels
top five runners will need to be
replaced from last year’s eighth-ranked
team.
Though that process won’t happen
overnight, junior Tyler Lega will be
looked to provide some instant leadership
after taking over the reins to a
young team. He’ll get some help from
junior Andre Rochet, who also returns.
If they can manage that, the team could
feel its effects for years to come.
As for now though, it will be an uphill
climb to even make it to out of a tough
regional field, much less state.
“We have Trinity and Eastern and
some other tough schools (on our
plate),” Thomas said. “Only three or four
teams get to go to state depending on
how many show up, so that’s our goal.”
After losing a handful
of runners to
graduation, the
South Oldham boys’
cross country team appears to be
looking at a rebuilding year this
season. Their biggest lost comes
with the departure of Caleb Chappell,
who finished 11th at the state
cross country meet last year.
A talented group of freshman
runners entering the program
should help to ease that transition
though.
“We’re going to rely heavily on
the freshman to start building,”
Coach Stan Clark said. “We’ve got
a group working quite well, and
there are twin brothers, Cole and
Tanner Dowdy, that are strong,
motivated runners. I expect them
to do quite well by the end of the
season.”
Senior Steven Saxey and sophomore
Jared Sanford also add depth
to the team after finishing as two
of the top four runners at state.
But no one will have a larger
role in the team’s success than
senior Leonard Faul.
As a junior this spring, Faul
captured the 800-meter run state
title at the state track and field
meet and will look to parlay that
into a strong showing on the cross
country circuit. Right now, that
appears to be the case.
Another way he’ll impact the
team is by providing leadership
for the younger runners. ners.
His first task will be helping
them get ready mentally for
this season. Getting the right
mindset is step one, Clark
said.
“The boys have just got to
be believing in themselves,”
Clark said. “Early on, we’re
going to take some blows, but
we have to keep training hard
and working to improve.”
If they can manage that,
their goal a top-10 finish at the
of reach.
To say that 2011 was
good to the North
Oldham volleyball
team might be a bit of
an understatement.
After cruising to a 24-8 regular
season record and wrapping up a
a 31st district title, the Lady Mustangs
made short work of competition
in the Eighth Region tournament
to earn a shot at the state title.
Though they ultimately fell just
short after a 25-17, 27-29, 25-15
loss to Greenwood in the semifinals,
things are lining up nicely for
another shot at a state title.
After being voted No. 8 in the
preseason coaches poll, they’re off
to a good start.
After traveling to the Bluegrass
State games this summer, the team
went 6-1 before falling to No. 4
Henry Clay.
Though they do lose a pair
of talented starters in defenders
Heather Glenn and Jenna Coleman,
they welcome back the entire
offensive set.
Three of those, senior setter
Shelby Foote and senior middle hitters
Madison Tinder and Amanda
“I really look for them to step
McDonough, the new head volleyball
coach at Oldham County High
School, finds himself in this season.
With six starters missing from last
season — including three current
students who left the team— the
Lady Colonels have their work cut
out for them as they attempt to replicate
last year’s success. Though their
2011 campaign was cut short of a
state tournament berth after a 25-15,
25-20 loss to North Oldham in the
regional final, the team wracked up
an impressive 30-8 record.
They’ll start with a core group
of three senior captains — setter
Shelby Hart and middle hitters Amy
Falone and Marissa Turnage — and
build outwards. The biggest question
mark will be who gets those three
the ball as the passing game is one
of the most pressing matters facing
the team heading into the season.
McDonough estimates the team
lost about 70 percent of the primary
distributors from last year.
That’s where sophomore libero
Danielle McCarson comes into play.
“Danielle is phenomenal as a
libero,” McDonough said. “She’s a
defensive standout and we want her
passing the ball as much as possible.
She leaves a lot of skin on the floor
just because she’s always willing to
do whatever it takes to bring the ball
up.”
Sophomores Abby Padgett and
Jenna Grantz will help fill that void
when necessary.
As for where they fit into the district,
with reigning regional champ
North Oldham looking strong once
again this year, McDonough has no
problem conceding that North is
still the team to beat. In his eyes,
they will be until someone unseats
them.
That doesn’t mean he isn’t confident
with his own group.
“I feel like we’ll definitely contend
for the region if we stay healthy and
we keep developing,” he said.
Era Prediction:
Second place in 31st district
a disappointing
first-round loss to
North Oldham in the 31st district
tournament, South
Oldham Coach
Amy Grimm is hoping her team
will use that loss as motivation
as it attempts to take back the
crown this year.
They could
need it early on
as they’ll face plenty chal-
lenges in front of them.
After
losing three
starters from last
year, the Lady Drag-
ons
first test will be
integrating an influx
of young talent — including several
freshean and an eighth grader — into
the team. How quickly they’re able to
do that should go a long way in determining
how successful they can be.
“We’re really young so one of the
things we’re going to have to work on
will be experience,” Grimm said. “This
is a whole new dynamic for us (mixing
the youth with the experience). Right
now, it’s really just building that team
chemistry and helping (the girls to)
learn to trust one another on the court.
But when you’re dealing with freshmen
and a couple of sophomores that are in
key roles, there will be growing pains.”
Her team will also have to fight
through injuries. In the offseason, two
key players were sidelined for extended
periods of time.
Courtney Worthington, a starting
setter on the team for the last three
years, is dealing with a stress fracture
in her back, while Emma Fields, one of
the team’s leading offensive players, has
been out with an ankle injury.
Once everyone is healthy, Grimm
noted that South’s defense will be where
they shine, at least early on. They’ll
turn to two juniors, Nicole Mitchell
and Brenna Kaelin, to facilitate that.
GREG WADDELL / THE OLDHAM ERA.
After watching
four players
graduate from
the program,
the South Oldham girls
golf team finds itself in a bit
of an usual situation as it
enters
the 2012 season.
Though they do wel-
come back
senior Katie Coyle,
the Lady Dragons find them-
selves in full-blown rebuilding
mode with only three golfers
on the roster.
The low number won’t
affect tournament play
though, Coach Ethan
Moore said. The team will be able
to navigate the four required individual
scores by multiplying their
highest round by two.
Junior Kayla Whitfield and
freshman Rachel Wright are the
new faces on the block this year
and will look to fill the void left
by their predecessors. If their preseason
play is any indication, they
should be just fine.
Moore praised Wright, saying
her athleticism — she’s also a
softball player — and previous golf
experience as a middle schooler
has allowed for a seamless transition
to the varsity team.
“(Rachel has) showed a whole
lot of promise during practices
this season and I expect her to be
competitive from the start,” he
said.
That coupled with Coyle’s
growth by “leaps and bounds” as
a player should give South a formidable
one-two punch as season
plays starts to heat up.
“They’ve both been able to
get into a nice rhythm and have
a quiet confidence about their
game,” Moore said. “Their willingness
to learn is off the charts.”
While the word team
implies more than
one player, sophomore
Katie Posto
will hit the links alone for the North
Oldham girls’ golf team this fall
after graduation gutted the lineup.
That said, though she won’t be
able to qualify for team titles, Posto
will have her hands plenty full as an
individual as she’ll try to replicate
the success of last year’s No. 1
Margo Ricks.
That shouldn’t be a problem as
that move has been years in the
making.
Joining the team as an eighth
grader in 2010, Posto has played a
big role since her first time on the
links, working her way to the team’s
No. 2 last year, In her time wearing
the teal and black, she has dropped
her average from 100 to the mid-
80s.
Part of that is do to the hard work
she has put in in the offseason to
refine her game, Head Coach Ron
Ricks said. The rest — natural talent.
“She’s a small girl, probably
about 5-foot-3 that weighs about
105 pounds, but she has the ability
to put on some significant length,”
Ricks said. “She’s learning every
day to improve her ball control, her
flight control and her putting and all
of those have significantly improved
over last year.”
That progression shouldn’t
change this year, Ricks said. In fact,
with the way she has grown as a
player, he added he wouldn’t be prised to see her drop her average
sur-
below 80 before the season is done.
If that’s the case, more wins could
be in North Oldham’s future.
The Oldham County
girls’ golf team will
forge a new identity
this fall as graduation
leaves the team without its top
two players, Meghan Theiss and
Abby McGohon.
Stepping in to fill those vacancies
will be a pair of underclassmen
in junior Maddy Gleeson and
sophomore Audrey Riggs.
Gleeson, the de facto No. 1
heading into the season, hovers
around the high 40s to low 50s in
scoring, while Riggs stays in the
mid to upper 50s.
“Maddy still has some work to
do in her game but she’s always
been a valuable player for us,”
Coach Jennifer Willard said.
“We’re still working with her to
improve her scores and she’s still
very young.”
