currently we are using ARVs and trials are ongoing at<br />

Mulago Hospital, while much concentration is in Lamwo<br />

and Kitgum districts,” Ms Ondoa said. Parliament also<br />

heard that government can’t afford vaccinations<br />

throughout the country because each vaccine costs<br />

Shs80,000 and every person needs three vaccines for<br />

proper prevention.<br />

Ms Ondoa advised people to “keep the zip up, and have<br />

as few sexual contacts as possible.” In a bid to <strong>com</strong>bat the<br />

infection, the Ministry of Health is carrying out<br />

sentisation campaigns across the country and borders,<br />

screening, and routine immunisation.<br />

Sexual Activities that could<br />

put your Health at Risk<br />

There are so many benefits of sex just like there are a<br />

number of dos and don’ts. This means some sexual<br />

activities are harmful.<br />

Even without campaigning about the benefits of sex, a lot<br />

of people engage in it. While it can’t be called dangerous,<br />

there are some practices that will expose one to several<br />

health <strong>com</strong>plications.<br />

Multiple sexual partners<br />

The scary phrase that once you sleep with someone you<br />

sleep with everyone in their past is true at least as far as<br />

infection is concerned. The more partners you have, the<br />

more you widen the circle of disease and sexually<br />

transmitted infections to catch. “There’s a very high<br />

chance of contracting HIV, hepatitis and the risk of other<br />

STI’s increases with multiple sexual partners,” says Dr<br />

Godfrey Alia, a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist<br />

at Mulago Hospital. He adds that Human Papilloma Virus<br />

(HPV) the virus behind cervical cancer and as most<br />

recently found, prostate cancer in men are directly<br />

connected to the practice of having many sexual partners.<br />

Engaging in sexual activity early<br />

Turns out there’s a reason after all behind the abstain<br />

campaigns among the youth. Dr Alia, says engaging in<br />

sexual activities during your early teenage years is a risk<br />

in itself because the person is not able to make informed<br />

decisions just yet. “The chances of a person having<br />

multiple sexual partners when they be<strong>com</strong>e of age are high<br />

if they start out early and they are more likely to get<br />

pregnant, procure abortions, and face problems arising from<br />

unsafe sex,” he cautions. According to the gynaecologist,<br />

teenagers tend to be more reckless with sex yet it is much<br />

safer to wait until one can be called an adult.<br />

Anal sex<br />

During anal sex, the capillaries in the anus break causing<br />

bleeding and cuts thus exposing one to infections. Dr Alia<br />

says because of the delicate membrane of the anus and the<br />

lack of natural lubrication, injuries are twice more likely<br />

than vaginal sex. The high concentration of infectious<br />

microorganisms not found in any other part of the body<br />

make this activity very risky and anal cancer is linked to the<br />

HPV passed on during anal sex. Along with infections<br />

<strong>com</strong>es physical damage, loss of bowel control and anal<br />

fissures (cracks in surrounding tissue) topping the list.<br />

Recently, it is being taken on by a growing number of<br />

heterosexual couples as a way of avoiding infection and<br />

pregnancy. But anal sex is unfortunately not a safer<br />

alternative to unprotected vaginal sex. “Every infection you<br />

can contract from penetrative vaginal sex can also be<br />

contracted by penetrative anal sex,” says the doctor.<br />

Oral sex<br />

Most people who opt for oral sex do not even think about<br />

the dangers they could be exposing themselves to. But Dr<br />

Alia says even oral sex has its risks “it is a form of sex and<br />

fluid is exchanged. It also could be rougher than vaginal<br />

sex because of less lubrication and the tissue inside the<br />

mouth is very delicate.” The person offering the oral sex<br />

risks contracting HIV and other STI’s if infected semen or<br />

pre cum <strong>com</strong>es into contact with a wound or abrasion in the<br />

mouth. The same goes for the person receiving if the fluid<br />

or blood enters their system through open sores. Although<br />

the risk is much lower than anal or vaginal sex, one can still<br />

get infections from oral sex if there are wounds in either<br />

partner. The true danger of oral sex is that most mouth<br />

wounds go unnoticed, and so it is hard to tell when it is<br />

safe.<br />

Group sex<br />

Although this is still rare among Ugandans, with all the<br />

western movies and pornography glorifying swinging<br />

(where married couples agree to swap partners), threesomes<br />

and orgies, there are a few people who practice it. “The risk<br />

in these is the same as that of having multiple sexual<br />

partners,” says Dr Alia. Chances of recklessness and<br />

not using a condom are high. It is also probable that<br />

people engaging in group sex will also practice oral<br />

and anal sex further increasing the risk.<br />
