BRINGING BOOKS AND CHILDREN TOGETHER SINCE 1995 ISSN 1177-0562
Duffy and libraries combine to spread
reading message to New Zealand schools
Duffy kids are getting the chance to save their local library in the
latest adventure from the Duffy Books in Homes theatre team.
In Duffy’s Book Bus Adventure, which is visiting over 500 schools around the country this year,
Mr Barrier sets out to shut down the library service since it makes no money. However, the
show’s hero Duffy and his librarian friends Awhina and Tiaki pull out all the stops to ensure
that libraries remain free and available for their community.
The story reaches beyond school halls thanks to a partnership between Duffy Books and Public
Libraries of New Zealand. Every child who sees the theatre will be given a card which is stamped
whenever they visit their local library. Once they collect five stamps they receive a free book to
keep, thanks to Duffy Books in Homes and Scholastic.
Linda Vagana, General Manager of Duffy Books in Homes believes that the association will
benefit both organisations. “Working with public libraries can’t help but reinforce the message
that reading is vitally important to our children’s futures,” she said.
Rowan Bettjeman, Robert Enari and Antonia Stehlin make up the team visiting the northern half
of the North Island this year while Rutene Spooner, Simon Paenga and Michael Leota will bring
Duffy to life in the lower North Island and the entire South
Island. They’re helped along their way by the generous
support of FleetPartners and Orix who provide each team
with a station wagon to tow a Kea trailer.
After every performance three children chosen by the
school will receive a certificate and book from the finalists
of the 2011 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards.
The New Zealand Post Award for Great Effort in Reading
and Writing recognises children who have made an extra
effort and gives them access to some of the latest high
quality books from New Zealand authors.
The Auckland-based team of Rowan Bettjeman,
Robert Enari and Antonia Stehlin put on a great
show at Otahuhu Primary School. School Sponsor:
The Students of King’s College
Mainfreight becomes an institution at hundreds of schools
Better known for its freight and
logistics business, Mainfreight has
also been making an important
contribution to hundreds of Duffy
schools for the last 15 years.
The company was a founding sponsor in 1995
and since 1997 it has sponsored the annual
Mainfreight Award for Excellence in Attitude.
Each year a senior student in each Duffy
schools is awarded a high quality reference
book, cup and certificate. Many schools
choose to make this their major end of year
prize for departing students.
Last year’s book prize was The Complete
Human Body – The Definitive Visual Guide
by Dr Alice Roberts. The book uses
computer-generated illustrations and the
latest medical and microscopic imaging to
explain every aspect of the human body
more clearly than ever before.
Representatives from Mainfreight and its
associated companies are invited to visit
schools and help present the award –
an opportunity which they all relish.
Linda Vagana believes that Mainfreight’s
support has been a cornerstone of the charity’s
success. “Mainfreight is not only a vital school
sponsor, they also provide us with a rent free
office and infrastructure which means that we
can make sure a high percentage of donations
make it to where they are most needed,”
she said.
Namaste, Annyong, Warm greetings, to
all Duffy Books in Homes schools, sponsors,
role models, supporters and families.
As this is our first newsletter for 2011 I wish you all
a Happy New Year, but also would like to take this
opportunity to express our thoughts and sorrows
not only for our Christchurch Duffy schools,
children and teachers, sponsors, supporters
and role models, but also to all the people and
communities of Christchurch who are facing one
of the most challenging tragedies in New Zealand’s
history. We trust that through this difficult time that
you may find some peace and comfort.
Globally, we continue to experience and hear about
the challenges financially and economically not only
in New Zealand but around the world. We believe
this makes the role of Duffy Books in Homes even
more important; empowering and inspiring our
Duffy children through our Duffy Role Model
assemblies and promoting the joy and celebration
of brand new books in children’s homes.
Also ready to inspire our kids are this year’s
talented and very hip team of actors on the road
with The Duffy Theatre who will be stirring up
the kids at every show. This term we will farewell
Jacqui Whyte who has been responsible for the
fantastic and smooth running of all our Duffy shows
as our Theatre Production Manager. We are sad to
see you leave us Jacqui and warmly acknowledge
all your amazing work over the last 14 years.
Thank you Jacqui! In replacing Jacqui I would
like to welcome back Sarah Graham, a former
Duffy actor from 2008 who is now our new
Theatre Production Manager.
We are very sad to also have to farewell two other
members of our team. Firstly Laraine Lash, thank
you so much for your dedication and fantastic work
over the last 13 years. We will really miss you
and are sure your schools feel the same way.
Our Sponsorship Manager Vanessa Johnson,
is off to further studies in Brisbane at the Christian
Heritage College. Thank you for all your work in
sponsorship and we wish you all the best with
your studies.
Lastly, I am looking forward to seeing the
Duffy programme go from strength to strength
in 2011, but all our successes would not be
possible without the investment and commitment
from our wonderful family of sponsors and
supporters. Thank you!
Take care and happy reading!
Linda Vagana
GENERAL MANAGER
Family Corner
Hi parents! Welcome to the first edition of
the Family Corner of ‘Read about it!’
In coming editions we hope to give you
some ideas about helping your kids get the
most out of the Duffy programme. There’ll
also be regular messages from our founder,
Alan Duff, directly to you.
Here are just a few ideas to get you started!
Help them choose
When your child receives their Book Offer brochure
you can ask them which books they like, whether they
have read something by that author before or whether
you would like reading a particular book with them.
Get excited
When it’s getting close to their Role Model assembly and book presentation kids love
to see that their parents are just as excited as they are. Talk about the books that
they ordered and who their special Role Model is going to be.
Take some time out
When your child brings home their new book or books, ask if they would like you
to read with them (or to them if they have just started school). Reading to your
kids is a wonderful way to improve their reading and also a great way to spend
time together.
Get involved
Find out when the school is having their Role Model assembly, Duffy Theatre show
or Mainfreight Award and join in the fun! Not only will these events give you a great
insight into how the programme works in the school but it will you give you some
great things to discuss with your child afterwards.
Give the gift of reading
Every November you will receive a catalogue from which you can choose a book or
books to give to your child at Christmas time for a price much lower than you would
find in a bookstore. Receiving a book as a present from you tells your child that
reading is something worthwhile.
Support your school
Many schools are lucky enough to have the assistance of their parents in running
the Duffy Books in Homes programme. You could offer to help label the books for a
class, wrap the boxes of books in wrapping paper or even assist with the school’s
fundraising efforts. Any support you can offer the school is greatly appreciated!
Message from Alan
Greetings from the Duffy Team, parents
It feels like we’re one big family and I guess we are if we’ve been around in
your children’s lives for the last 15 years. A few of our very first Duffy book
kids are now parents! A bit young but we love them all. We’ve always had
our Duffy children’s best interests at heart. And in this tougher world of big
changes, we feel an even greater sense of responsibility. Because the person
with the least education is the first to suffer in any economic downturn.
Not what we want for our Duffy kids.
So, parents, can you please give ‘em
the message, “It’s cool to read, it’s
cool to achieve.” And unless you are
a sports superstar, you won’t get
there without reading heaps. Oh,
and there is no shame in having
ambitions, in aspiring to be the best.
With warm regards
from Alan Duff
and all the Duffy Team.

2010 Highlights
Top of the highlights list
for 2010 was the August 24
celebration of 15 years since
the launch of Duffy Books
in Homes.
Hundreds of schools, hundreds
of thousands of children and over
7,000,000 books all meant that this
celebration at Viscount School was a
great commemoration of this important
milestone.
Co-MCs Duffy and Niva Retimanu kept
the show moving while Jan Hellriegel was
joined by Jackie Clarke, Sara-Jane Elika
and Grace Ikenasio to help her sing the
Duffy song which she wrote all those
years ago.
Founders Alan Duff and Christine
Fernyhough both spoke about their love
of the programme and we welcomed
sponsors, role models and friends of the
programme from past and present.
Another great event was the 2010 World of
Wearable Art (WOW) Awards. Mainfreight
joined with Duffy to sponsor the Children’s
Section. The winner was Victus Libri (Who
Needs Computer Games) by Jane Ewers
of Nelson.
Team highlights were headed by
Anna Richards winning her fourth
Rugby World Cup with the Black Ferns.
This was followed closely by the arrival
of an important new team member –
Duffy himself!
recommend books, and to reach out to new
readers to read.
Is there a Duffy school near you
that needs some help
Duffy schools around the country are busy getting
ready to hand out books to thousands of children
who would normally not have easy access to books
of their own.
For no more than $13.40 per child, per year you can become a
Duffy sponsor.
Right now we have 25 schools that cost less than $500 per
annum to sponsor. You can partner with us to support a school
and help give each child a minimum of five brand new books
every year.
The contribution made by grandparents to schools and families
makes a huge difference but is not always recognised in the
Duffy makes a point of rewarding
grandparents who have gone the extra
mile. They may have helped with coaching
a sports team, doing maintenance around
the school or even simply spending extra
time helping their grandchildren with their
reading.
Schools choose their lucky grandparent
in many different ways. Children might
write stories or poems about them or if the
choice is too hard then there might be a
lucky draw.
Thanks Norm!
While that victory now seems a long time
ago, Norm’s legacy has continued to
mean an enormous amount to thousands
of Duffy kids in 24 schools around the
country.
At the end of Term One the last of the
proceeds of Norm’s win will run out but
the thousands of books in children’s
homes will continue to bring a great deal
of enjoyment.
Last year, schools picked one special
grandparent and honoured them with a
certificate and book presented at a
school assembly.
The award was Coastlines of
New Zealand by Warren Jacobs,
published by New Holland Kowhai.
This stunning collection of Warren Jacob’s
full colour photographs covers the extent
of the country’s magnificent coastline.
Hellos and goodbyes
A big welcome goes out to Sarah Graham who is the new
Production Manager for the Duffy Theatre. Sarah performed
in the theatre back in 2008 and is now busy ensuring that
two teams of actors get to over 500 schools throughout
the length and breadth of the country.
We also farewell some key team members this year.
Sponsorship Manager Vanessa Johnson has moved to
Australia to study. Her shoes are filled jointly by current
team members Linda Vagana, Phil Horrobin and Michelle
Macefield.
Theatre Production Manager Jacqui Whyte is also leaving
us to run her own business. She’ll continue to help out
with our new partnership with Public Libraries of New Zealand as well as at Bailey Road
School (a Duffy school attended by her children!). Jacqui is one of the longest serving
Duffy team members so we’re happy we’re not losing her altogether!
Finally, Regional Representative Laraine Lash is retiring after
13 years with Duffy. Laraine has been a familiar face in schools through Waikato, Rotorua,
Taupo, Turangi and Wellington. We wish her all the best as she takes a break from life on
the road to concentrate on her work at the Taupo Museum. Laraine’s school visits will be
picked up by Jacqui Knight.
Duffy and GE
General Manager Linda Vagana
and Duffy joined in the fun at
the GE Money Summer Hummer
at Auckland’s Okahu Bay on
February 12.
GE is a longtime supporter of Duffy Books
in Homes so we thought we’d repay the
favour by having Duffy volunteer to take the
group Zumba class.
As you can see, he was a huge hit!
Letters
Hi Jacqui
Thank you for the email, we are humbled by the
messages of support we have received and the
kind wishes from people who have stayed with us
over many years.
Christchurch has been devastated by this latest
earthquake, the loss of life is unprecedented by
Canterbury standards. I think the death toll has
now exceeded 75 people, it’s very sad. It will take
a long time to put things right, but we are a hardy
bunch of people and refuse to be beaten.
50% of Christchurch is still without electricity and
some suburbs are under water/sludge. We are
fortunate at the motel to have been able to remain
operational (despite no electricity for 8 hours)
although there are some serious sanitation issues
that affect us all. We are dealing with cancellations
and almost immediate new bookings by the
minute – a TV Crew from Australia’s Channel 7
are here with us as well as a Japanese film crew,
EQC inspectors, Property Management Staff from
ANZ and several displaced Christchurch families.
We have them all, and will continue to work to
keep these people as safe and as comfortable as
possible, despite the regular tremors.
Thank you again for thinking of us, your kind
sentiments help to give us strength.
Regards
Dear Books in Homes Team
A huge thank you for sponsoring our school in the
Books in Homes programme. We all love being
involved and it’s really exciting when the books
arrive. We would also like to wish you all a very
Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday.
Thanks again for your support. We really
appreciate it.
Dear Phil
Thank you so much for arranging for Duffy Theatre
to visit Kidz First Children’s Hospital. The show
was outstanding, energetic and totally engaged
the young patients and hospital staff. The cast also
had to work in an extremely challenging setting
and were highly professional. It was wonderful to
see the children have such an enjoyable time and
I am sure the laughter helped their recovery.
I look forward to working with Duffy Books in
Homes again.
Kind regards
Dear Books in Homes Team
Your wonderful programme continues to inspire
and support our children. Books in Homes means
a lot to us and our school community. It is a part
of the culture of Glendene School now and plays a
very important part in the literacy of our students.
Thank you very much
Dear Sir/s
Thank you for all the amazing Duffy books you
have given to our school.
If it wasn’t for those books and all
of you then we wouldn’t be able
to learn and live our dreams. I have
a lot of books to read now that you
have given me some. I read to my little
cousin. I still enjoy the books
that I got when I was little.
Thanks for all the books you
have given me. Hope you
have a good Christmas holiday.
