Thank You
As this is our final newsletter for semester one, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff
of Galston Public School for their wonderful work during this semester.
We are extremely lucky to have such a dedicated teaching staff who work tirelessly to deliver a
quality, well-rounded education for all of our students. They spend many hours of their own time,
ensuring that your child has the opportunity to participate in activities such as sport, drama, dance,
excursions, choir, peer groups and debating, as well as delivering excellent educational programs.
Our office staff do a tremendous job running our school office. We are extremely lucky to have Mrs
Cordina, Mrs Morgan and Mrs Commons at Galston Public School. They do so many extra things,
above and beyond their roles, to ensure that parents always receive a warm welcome to our office,
as well as a high standard of service.
We also thank all of our support staff for the extra support they provide to the staff and students.
Their contribution greatly enhances the programs that operate within our great school.
To the Galston community, thank you for your support during this semester. Without your support
many of our school programs would be difficult to run.
4P News
This term, 4P has been busy. We have been working on our novel studies, writing letters to our pen
pals, learning more about Australian inventions and trying to get our heads around fractions!
We received another letter from our pen pals in Ireland. We decided that it would be nice to make
them a postcard with an illustration of an Australian landmark on the front. We had to work under
pressure to get them to the post office so they would make it to Ireland in time. Our pen pals finish
school for the year on Friday, so we had no time to waste. We were eagerly waiting for
confirmation that they had arrived in time. Luckily, Miss Payne received a message just this morning
to say that out postcards had arrived and they were fantastic. It has been wonderful to have people
to write to on the other side of the world. We have learnt about what it is like to go to school in
Ireland and have found that we have things in common with our pen pals. One student in our class
shares the same birthday as a student from Ireland. In a world where we want everything to happen
straight away, it has been exciting to wait for another batch of letters to arrive by snail mail!
This term we had a project to complete on an Australian invention. Projects of all shapes and sizes
arrived in the classroom and it was a challenge to find a place for them all. We had Hills Hoists, Ford
Utes, Black Boxes, an Underwater Torpedo, Owen Machine Guns, Victa Lawnmowers, Vegemite jars,
a Movie clapper, a miniature airport and inflight camera, a powerboard, Speedos and the
Boomerang. Who would have known that Australians have been responsible for the invention of all
these wonderful things.
We are all looking forward to a break to recharge the batteries and defragment the mind, ready for
Term 3. Hip, hip hooray for HOLIDAYS!!!
Debating
This week, the debating team travelled to Kenthurst PS
for the second round of the Interschool Debating
Competition. The topic, ‘Today’s children are spoilt’
generated a lot of discussion, with the Galston team
coming up with a strong negative case to put forward on
the day. Our team talked about how electronics enrich a
child’s education, that not all children are spoilt as some
children in Australia are living in poverty, are homeless,
or orphaned, Indigenous reading levels are not the
equivalent of ours and some children live under the threat
of war. The fabulous quick thinking team made some
outstanding rebuttals which helped them win on the day.
Well done to all the debaters and their helpers for another great debate.
Nathan Hindmarsh Visit
Galston Public School was lucky enough to have a visit from Parramatta Eels great, Nathan
Hindmarsh, last week. He came to present the runners-up trophy to the Galston Rugby League team
and was nice enough to stay around for some photos and signatures. Unfortunately Galston’s biggest
Parramatta tragic, Mr Montgomery, missed the occasion for a badly timed meeting. He was very
lucky that Miss Payne was thoughtful enough to get a signature and photo for him. Thank you to
Nathan Hindmarsh for coming out to the school and to Matt Brady for organising the visit.
Dural Squash BBQ – Many thanks
Thanks to Michelle Vumbaca who grabbed the unexpected opportunity for our school to operate a
available to fill this job, please contact her on 0407 413 952 to discuss.
