Physically, she is being well cared for, but Don knows that she needs more. 

Now in its 36th year, Nikkei Concerns has taken on the challenge of transforming 

the bark-covered former KIDcare playground into a beautiful, wheelchair-accessible

The beauty of the garden, set off by flowing water and sculpted stone, is designed 

to refresh mind, body, and spirit and to encourage visits with family and friends. 

Smooth stone pavers will allow residents to wheel or walk their way throughout 

the garden space, helping them to gain strength, mobility, and balance. Once the 

project is complete, the area available for indoor/outdoor physical therapy will 

more than double. 

The project will also provide garden-views through a bank of windows designed to 

bring the outside in. When temperatures drop or umbrellas rise, residents unable to

Dear Members of our Community, 

Growth and renewal, springtime in Seattle, hope springs eternal. Just like the change in seasons, I feel that our 

organization is entering spring. We’ve endured a cold rainy winter of the legislative session that cut deeply into 

our funding, but we’re ready to embark on new strategies and opportunities in the coming year. We are like the 

bamboo – resilient, flexible and sprouting in unexpected places – no matter what funding challenge is set before us. 

The NC Board has also gone through our season of change, with the establishment of set terms, Board criteria and 

verification of a process to help with Board positions for the next year. Our Board has taken some significant strides 

together, making us and Nikkei Concerns stronger; working to put our organization in the best position for success. 

I personally feel a sense of renewal as I work through my last term as President. After all, as Nikkei Concerns just 

passed our 35th birthday, we are still in the spring of our lifetime.

What a difference a year makes! It seems like yesterday that I was hired as your CEO… 

Over the past year, the Board and staff have worked diligently to define our goals (“Results”) and enhance our 

governance and operational structures. The “Results” are simple… yet profound: “To maintain/enhance the 

quality of life and independence of our elders through honoring the Nikkei culture and values.” We will do this via 

the “Nikkei Concerns Way:” “To support the quality of life of our family (everyone connected with 

Nikkei Concerns) through respect, kimochi and trust.” 

The “Results” and “Nikkei Concerns Way” drive how we think, do and evaluate… and they are paying 

dividends! Recently, we received one of our best annual state inspection reports of Seattle Keiro. Shortly 

thereafter, the 2010 audit reflected an organization in great fiscal condition. The Dragonfly Program, created by 

former and current family members along with staff, provides a more compassionate environment and services for 

those losing their loved one. I often hear how Nikkei Concerns abounds with smiling faces and “can-do” attitudes. 

The Keiro Garden will address critical needs of our residents of today and serve as a catalyst to expand our 

“thinking and doing” to better engage and serve our community of the future. And the list goes on… 

One year later and it is clearly evident that I am where I am supposed to be, and I am grateful to all of you for 

your consistent support of Nikkei Concerns. There is still much to do… and I eagerly embrace the work ahead.

High Marks for Seattle Keiro’s First QIS Survey 

Seattle Keiro just received our best survey results ever! The Department of Social and Health 

Services (DSHS) conducted their new and more rigorous Quality Indicator Survey (QIS) of 

Seattle Keiro in April. 

“The outcome was above and beyond what we could have hoped for,” says Madeleine 

Miller-McKay, Director of Nursing Services. “We had fewer than 4 citations, which is close 

to perfect, considering most facilities receive an average of 15.” None were directly related 

to patient care, which demonstrates that staff continues to provide quality care to all of Keiro’s 

146 residents. 

This new survey protocol focuses more on residents’ quality of life. Inspectors evaluate 

all aspects of the facility’s operation against 542 possible citations or tags, including the 

medical, physical and social conditions of residents, plus the Environmental, Food Service and 

Activities departments. 

“I truly feel that the residents feel respected and valued as individuals as well as part of the 

Nikkei Concerns family,” says Randi Saeter, Administrator. 

Family members are pleased with the inspection results of the unannounced annual survey. 

Receiving confirmation that the facility lives up to regulatory expectations while continuing 

to honor each resident’s culture, requests and needs gives families confidence to entrust their 

loved one’s care to us.

A Vision Shared 

“I believe that landscape architecture and architecture working seamlessly 

together create an environment that promotes well-being.” —Rick Sundberg 

Landscape architect Scott Murase, architect Rick Sundberg, 

and civil engineer Ralph Iboshi are combining expertise 

and artistry to create an environment of well-being for 

our seniors. They offer our community an enduring gift 

for the Seattle Keiro Garden Project. 

Murase, an award-winning designer, expressed, “My 

hope is that this garden will add a sense of serenity, calm 

and peacefulness to Keiro’s surroundings,” says Murase. 

Keiro’s commitment to the quality of life of its seniors 

inspired him. 

Sundberg, architect of the Wing Luke Asian Museum, 

embraced the vision as well, providing a building design 

that allows the viewer to have a connection to the garden 

from the inside. “I like to work where the nature of the 

community is strong,” says Sundberg.

access the garden will still be able to enjoy Seattle’s seasons, from summer sun 

and autumn leaves to winter snow and the blooming of spring. 

In all, six thousand square feet of little-used space will be reclaimed by the 

project, benefitting 146 residents, 235 staff members, roughly 500 volunteers 

and 33,000 visitors a year. 

CEO Jeffrey Hattori saw the difference a garden could make when his mother 

lived at Keiro. Although she was suffering from cancer, he remembers seeing 

joy and contentment on her face when she was outside watching her grandson 

at play. “You can’t put a price tag on that,” he says. 

Generous donors—including Hattori—have already given $150,000 of the 

estimated $500,000 it will take to complete the project, and professional 

design and engineering services are being donated as well. (See sidebar.) 

Although difficult economic times have impacted our country, the quality of life 

we owe our residents cannot wait. 

Together, our gifts will create a beautiful garden space that will enhance 

the lives of our residents and the Keiro community. Over the next five 

months, specific giving opportunities will be made available. We need your

A Life Renewed 

Tak Miyabe used to take it easy and 

let his wife, Seiko, adventure on day 

trips with Nikkei Horizons. But when 

she passed, his daughter signed him 

up for Nikkei Horizons so he wouldn’t 

be alone at home. 

Since then, Tak has made new friends 

and takes classes and tours with 

Nikkei Horizons. He looks after his 

health in the Enhance Fitness class, 

three times a week; enjoyed Brunch at 

Teatro ZinZanni and Cirque du Soleil’s 

Kooza performance last summer, 

explored the Wenatchee Apple 

U-Pick tour last fall, and is considering 

joining the Lunch Bunch. 

Miyabe likes to be active, but not 

too active, “I’m happy as long as I 

can just get on the bus and go,” he 

says with a smile.

Dragonfly Program Helps Families 

June Takeshita was a recent Seattle 

Keiro resident and a former resident 

at Nikkei Manor. Almost 99 years 

old, she was tired and ready to say 

her final goodbyes to the ones she 

loved. 

June’s family from near and far came 

to Seattle Keiro to honor her and say 

goodbye. One of June’s daughters, 

May Takahashi, is involved with the 

Dragonfly Project, developed to 

help families at their loved one’s end 

of life. May knew that she and her 

family could focus on her mom and 

receive the support they needed from 

the staff. Until her time came, June 

lived her life surrounded by the family 

she loved. 

The Seattle Keiro staff implemented 

the Dragonfly Project to ease June‘s 

final journey. The Activities staff 

provided soothing Japanese music. 

The kitchen provided snacks and 

drinks, so the family could stay with 

June as long as they needed. The

needed a little rest or 

wanted to spend the 

night in June’s room.

family to see if they

us feel comfortable.” “Everyone

Catching up with Yoshiko 

Since Nikkei Concerns welcomed 

Yoshiko into the family last October 

(see our Fall 2010 Tayori), she has 

made Nikkei Manor her home and 

found new friends. Extended family 

members just became aware of her 

situation and recently visited her. 

“I’m doing good. I have made lots of 

friends here and the food is good,” 

says Yoshiko, “and I like to go across 

the street to Uwajimaya.” 

According to Nikkei Manor Manager, 

Lisa Waisath, Yoshiko is doing better 

than “good.” She receives proper 

nutrition, wears clean clothes again, 

lives among friends, and is thriving 

as one of the residents who currently 

consider Nikkei Manor their home. 

“Yoshiko often likes to walk across 

the street to Uwajimaya with her 

friends,” says Lisa. “They like the 

exercise and the freedom to go out 

when they want.” 

When asked what sets Nikkei Manor 

apart from the other facilities like it in 

the area, Lisa is quick to point out, 

“It’s the families and the volunteers 

who make this place unique. Over 

100 caring people come to Nikkei 

Manor to help with our residents, play 

games with them, talk to them, or 

maintain our facilities. You can’t find 

that at any of the independent-living 

facilities in King County. The value to 

our residents to be supported in this 

way is immeasurable.” 

Nikkei Manor offers 50 private 

apartment units: studios, studio 

alcoves and one bedrooms. All 

are carpeted, and feature private, 

handicapped-accessible bathrooms, 

and kitchenettes. The residents have 

three meals a day, plus snacks, 

participate in group activities, and 

enjoy a full life as they age into their 

“golden years.” 

For those who need a safe and 

friendly place to stay for a little 

while (one to four weeks), respite 

opportunities are available. Nikkei 

Yoshiko and her friend, Kaz 

Manor offers a fully furnished unit 

with a selection services from Nikkei 

Manor’s extensive offerings.

Lions, Tigers, and Pancakes, Oh My! 

Residents, volunteers, and staff spent a delightful and 

leisurely breakfast at the Seattle First Hill Lions Club 

Annual Pancake Breakfast at Kawabe Memorial 

House on Sunday, February 27. The social atmosphere 

and delicious food (especially the Portuguese sausage!) 

gave everyone a wonderful sense of belonging. Many 

thanks to generous donors who made this excursion 

possible, with additional thanks to the Lions and all who 

attended or sold tickets, since Seattle Keiro will benefit 

from a portion of the proceeds!

awareness of and instills pride in multi-cultural individuals 

and families. We promoted screenings of One Big Hapa 

Family, by animation filmmaker Jeff Chiba Stearns. 

Japan Relief Efforts 

In response to Japan’s devastating earthquakes and 

tsunami, Nikkei Concerns sprang into action. We 

joined with other community organizations to form 

SeattleJapanRelief (encouraging donations to Peace 

Winds America, the American Red Cross, and the YMCA 

of Greater Seattle) and shared in the success at the House 

of Hong fundraising dinner on March 27. 

Nikkei Concerns is also collecting donations for those 

impacted by the recent disasters in Japan and will send 

the funds to two organizations, a Japanese organization 

who serves the elderly and Peace Winds America.

Senior Moments 

It’s great to be a senior with Nikkei Concerns! Our senior moments are full of fun and 

adventure, expanding our world or discovering the world within. We honor long-held traditions 

and treasure kind gestures of friendship and love. Senior moments at Nikkei Concerns are 

precious memories that we hold onto with all of our might. 

Chef Ryuichi Nakano and crew hang out with Seattle Keiro residents 

Tomiko Steincamp and Augusta De Jesus after Chef Nakano’s 

delicious sushi lunch. On April 12, Chef Ryuichi Nakano, from Kisaku 

Restaurant in Seattle, shared the delights of his culinary artistry with the 

Seattle Keiro residents, plus 40 community members. Chef Nakano 

and crew helped launch Seattle Keiro’s new Guest Chef Program, 

which brings talented local chefs and their delicious dishes to the 

residents. Many thanks to Chef Nakano and all who participated.

Talented performing groups from 

around the region delighted the 

Seattle Keiro residents on Girls’ Day. Dancing by the 

Peninsula Japanese Women’s Club and Kisaragi-kai, 

koto and singing by Uguisu-kai, hula and even more 

singing from Tampopo no kai honored girls and ladies 

everywhere with their skill and dedication to their art. 

Domo arigato gozaimasu to all of our artists. 

Kokoro Kai participants, volunteers, and staff 

gathered at Four Seas Restaurant to celebrate 

a belated Shinnenkai and express appreciation 

to all of the dedicated volunteers who make 

Kokoro Kai such a tight-knit family. With the comfort of good food and 

companionship, we recognized and honored Miyo Ike for her volunteer 

efforts and leadership. Everyone delighted in the ukulele magic of John 

Iwai and Jack Akamine, was entertained by the Rainbow Chorus, and 

happily remembered 2010 in Eugene Tagawa’s touching slide show. 

Whether satisfying their caffeine cravings at Starbucks or 

chowing down at South China Restaurant, Nikkei Manor 

residents are out on the town. For Valentine’s Day, Lori 

Harada, Kaz Ishimitsu, and Yoshiko Murakami of the 

regular Coffee Walk crew presented their favorite baristas 

with a handcrafted card. NM residents also caught the 

University of Washington Quad cherry trees in full bloom 

and took in the sights at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival 

at Seattle Center. 

While Nikkei Horizons Manager Rie Taki and Sara Kosugi savor the sweet delights 

of homemade mushi manju, instructors Yuki Chikamura and Setsuko Agata reinvent 

Japanese cooking to be both healthy and fun! Don’t miss your second chance to learn

Kasuzuke at White River Buddhist Church on June 27!

breathing new life into our Fund 

Development Department. Beginning 

in March, they have quickly made an 

impact on the volunteers and staff at 

Nikkei Concerns, as well as in the 

larger community. They bring a wealth 

of volunteer fundraising experience, 

and thanks to them, our fundraising, 

donor stewardship and events will 

be more dynamic and relationshipcentered 

than ever. 

Patty and Audrey are truly dedicated 

to elders and the community. Patty 

said, “I have first-hand experience 

with my Mom at Kokoro Kai and how 

she is treated with such kindness, 

caring, 

friendship and 

respect. This is 

more than a job, 

it is a passion 

for me.” Audrey 

shared, “I have 

a strong desire 

to connect with 

the elderly, 

particularly the 

Japanese, and 

give back to a 

community that I cherish.” 

Although Patty is a Seattle native 

and Audrey hails from California’s 

Bay Area, both put high priorities 

on family and love travel. Patty is 

a University of Washington alumna 

and is married with a college-bound 

Patty Hiroo Mastrude and Audrey Kamemoto 

daughter. She loves delicious food 

and pilates. Audrey graduated from 

the University of California - Davis 

and holds an M.A. in Cross Cultural 

Studies from Fuller Theological 

Seminary. She is also married and 

enjoys scrapbooking and anything to 

do with her three children!

Our volunteers (over 1500 of them in 2010!) are our strength, our inspiration, and a never-ending source of laughter 

and caring. They all give from their hearts, without expecting anything more than a resident’s smile. If you ask, “Why do 

you volunteer” they say, “It’s fun and rewarding. The residents are so wonderful.” Whether they play bingo, sing and 

dance, or help with laundry, volunteers bring life and vitality to Nikkei Concerns that is unique. 

We celebrated Volunteer Appreciation Week with festivities for the volunteers at Seattle Keiro and Nikkei Manor. Each 

volunteer received a small token of our esteem, which included a homemade bookmark decorated by the residents. 

From everyone at Nikkei Concerns to each and every volunteer who has touched the lives of the residents and 

participants, we offer a very warm and heartfelt thank you. You are our heroes every day of the year!
