Students’ final year project and paper honoured
學 生 畢 業 論 文 及 項 目 獲 嘉 許
The final year projects undertaken by
two graduates of PolyU’s BSc (Hons)
in Environmental and Occupational
Science & Health (EOSH), Ms NG Tsuichi
and Ms Persis MOK Pui-sze, were
recently awarded by the Occupational
Safety & Health Council (OSHC) OSH
Student Research Scholarships. Miss Ng
was also a winner of their Best Project
Award. Both of their projects were
supervised by Ir Jonathan CHUNG For,
Engineer of the Industrial Centre (IC). The
Prize Presentation Ceremony was held
on 18 December 2012 at the Hong Kong
Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The “Best Project Award” introduced
by OSHC aims at encouraging more
university and post-secondary students
to study OSH-related issues. In 2008
the OSHC further introduced the “OSH
Student Research Scholarship” to
encourage university and post-secondary
students to pursue quality applied
research related to OSH issues in their
studies. According to the Scholarship
regulations, this provisional Scholarship
award will be conferred on the award
recipients following the
successful completion
of their project with a
satisfactory pass grade
within a specified period.

Outstanding students receive scholarship
學 生 獲 頒 獎 學 金 嘉 許 其 卓 越 表 現
Bosch Rexroth China recently
committed to granting a new
round of “Rexroth 4EE Scholarship”
to the Industrial Centre (IC) starting in
2012/13 for three consecutive years.
Two Scholarships each amounting to
HK$12,500 will be granted each year
to students demonstrating the best
performance in using and learning
technologies and facilities provided by
Bosch Rexroth.
Two groups of students were nominated
by IC to receive this year’s Rexroth
4EE Scholarship for their outstanding
performance as demonstrated in learning
and using the technologies and facilities
provided by Bosch Rexroth in their group
project work.
PolyU’s IC has enjoyed a fruitful
partnership with Bosch Rexroth, one
of the world’s leading specialists in the
field of drive and control technologies
for industrial automation. Our first
collaboration began in 2007 when
IC became Hong Kong’s first “Bosch
Rexroth Knowledge Partner”. In 2009,
Bosch Rexroth further offered two
scholarships, each of RMB10,000, to IC
trainees for three consecutive years.
In addition to Rexroth 4EE Scholarship,
IC also awarded a Technical College
MACSPA & Peake Scholarship to the
student who produced the best Logbook/
Project Report.

工 業 中 心 趣 味 之 旅 第 三 次 舉 辦

的 木 板 或 亞 克 力 立 體 雪 花 蠟 燭 座 紀 念 品 乙 份 。

process demonstrations were also given at some technical workshops. 工 業 中 心
技 術 人 員 向 參 觀 的 理 大 職 員 及 學 生 講 解 工 程 技 術 操 作 流 程 。 個 別 工 場 並 安 排
即 場 工 業 製 作 示 範 , 讓 參 觀 者 大 開 眼 界 。
Around 60 staff and students explored
IC’s interesting technologies and
facilities during the IC Fun Tour held on
Thursday, 21 March 2013.
This is the third year the Industrial
Centre (IC) has held its Fun Tour for
PolyU staff members and students. The
feedback was even more overwhelming
than before. Participants were divided
into three groups each guided by an IC
professional staff member. They were
introduced to more than 10 technical
workshops and various demonstrations
on facilities and technologies. Commonly
known technologies and engineering
processes such as 3D Printing, CAM,
PCM, etc. were introduced, explained
and demonstrated to participants of
different background and disciplines.
Although some engineering technologies
and processes are not easy to
understand, participants still find them
amazing as they were able to see the
processes and touch some of the final
outcomes and products. Such experience
was really eye-opening and inspiring to
many of them.
Specially-designed small souvenirs were
given to participants at some technical
workshops, including a snowflake candle
stand laser-cut from wooden or acrylic
board.
六 十 名 理 大 學 生 及 教 職 員 參 加 了 工
約 業 中 心 於 三 月 二 十 一 日 舉 辦 的 「 工
業 中 心 趣 味 之 旅 」, 增 加 了 對 工 業 中 心 的
多 種 技 術 和 設 備 的 認 識 。
是 次 為 工 業 中 心 第 三 次 舉 辦 「 工 業 中 心 趣
味 之 旅 」 活 動 。 理 大 教 職 員 及 學 生 的 反 應
非 常 熱 烈 。 參 加 者 共 分 為 三 組 , 在 工 業 中
心 專 業 人 員 的 帶 領 下 參 觀 了 多 個 技 術 工 場
及 不 同 技 術 和 設 備 之 示 範 , 安 排 參 觀 的 技
術 工 場 包 括 三 維 打 印 、 電 腦 輔 助 製 造 、 光
蝕 刻 製 造 等 等 。 對 參 加 者 而 言 , 個 別 的 技
術 也 許 較 為 複 雜 和 深 奧 , 但 參 加 者 仍 然 能
夠 透 過 現 場 技 術 示 範 親 身 觀 看 和 觸 摸 到 生
產 加 工 成 果 , 對 此 均 留 下 深 刻 印 象 。
個 別 的 技 術 工 場 特 別 為 是 次 的 趣 味 之 旅 製
造 了 小 量 紀 念 品 送 贈 予 參 加 者 , 其 中 包 括
利 用 木 板 或 亞 克 力 膠 板 以 激 光 切 割 方 法 製
成 的 立 體 雪 花 蠟 燭 座 。

Technical visits to complement academic study
技 術 考 察 輔 學 活 動

The Industrial Centre (IC) has recently
offered two technical visits as a
complementary learning activity for
academic subjects offered by AP (Subject
AP1D01 Science and Technologies of
Economic Importance) and SD (Subject
SD3233 Information Design and Subject
SD3234 Wayshowing Design) in semester
two of 2012/13. Students were guided by
IC technical staff to visit various technical
workshops. Demonstrations on different
technologies and facilities were also
given to students.
To complement the subject content
and intended learning outcomes, the
visit for AP students covered a variety
of technologies including Reverse
Engineering, CNC Machining, Rapid
Prototyping, Intelligent Automation,
Prototyping, Electro-Plating and
Photochemical Machining. The focus
was to increase students’ knowledge
and understanding of the application of
different technologies and engineering
processes in real life. The visit for SD
students focused more on prototyping
and use of materials. Students visited
Rapid Prototyping & Manufacturing,
Prototyping (including Laser Cutting,
Acrylic Sheet Fabrication and Vacuum
Forming), Surface Finishing (including
Non-Metal Plating) and Sheet Metal.
These technologies and processes are
relevant to their study work and can
provide inspiration for their design work.
業 中 心 在 本 學 期 分 別 為 應 用 物 理 學
工 系 及 設 計 學 院 舉 辦 了 技 術 考 察 輔 學
活 動 。 在 工 業 中 心 技 術 人 員 的 帶 領 下 , 學
生 參 觀 了 多 個 技 術 工 場 , 個 別 技 術 工 場 亦
安 排 即 場 技 術 和 製 作 示 範 。
為 配 合 學 科 的 教 學 內 容 和 預 期 學 習 成 果 ,
兩 次 的 技 術 考 察 重 點 各 異 。 應 用 物 理 學 科
的 考 察 涵 蓋 較 多 元 的 工 程 技 術 , 包 括 逆 向

2012 held on Wednesday, 20 February
2013, the Industrial Centre (IC) was
awarded the Highest Growth Award
- Winner. The Highest Growth Award
is presented to PolyU department/
office/unit with the highest growth
in consultancy service and work for
that particular year. In 2008/09 IC also
received the same award from PTeC for
having the highest growth in consultancy
service and work.
年 二 月 二 十 日 舉 行 的 二 零 一 二 年 度
今 傑 出 專 業 服 務 頒 獎 典 禮 中 , 工 業 中
心 獲 理 大 科 技 及 顧 問 有 限 公 司 頒 發 最 高 增

R&D experience in MRO
PolyU is renowned for its application-oriented culture and
has always soared to great heights by staying close to the practical
needs of our community. The Industrial Centre (IC) is a loyal supporter
of this culture at all times. We have been providing practical solutions to
industry and our community for many years. An important but not so
widely-known industry sector which the Centre has been working in for
a long period of time is Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO).
The public may not be aware of the fact that aviation is a large and
important industry in Hong Kong, as it is an important regional
aviation hub. Our Hong Kong International Airport is the third busiest
international passenger airport and operates the busiest international
cargo facility in the world. China, on the other hand, is one of the
world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. With a forecast of 1.5 billion
passenger traffic in the country by 2030, Boeing has estimated the
need for 5,260 new airplanes in China by 2031 and that China will need

The Industrial Centre has been working with The Hong Kong Aero Engine Services
Limited (HAESL) since 2002 on different projects and some of them are even accredited
by one of its major shareholders Rolls Royce. 工 業 中 心 與 香 港 航 空 發 動 機 維 修 服 務 有

99,400 maintenance technicians to service this growing fleet. On the
other hand, Hong Kong has a number of world-renowned aircraft and
aero engine maintenance companies providing first-class service to major
airline companies.
IC has been collaborating with the major stakeholders such as Hong
Kong Aero Engine Services Limited (HAESL), Hong Kong Aircraft
Engineering Company Limited (HAECO) and China Aircraft Services
Limited (CASL) for many years. Collaborations include process and system
development, tailor-made technical facilities development and manpower
development. HAESL, for example, has been collaborating with IC since
2002. The collaboration is so fruitful that in 2006 HAESL was nominated
by IC to receive the “Most Valuable Partners Award” from PolyU’s PTeC.
The company was again nominated by IC to receive the “Distinguished
Knowledge Transfer Partnership Award” from PolyU’s PTeC in 2012.
The collaboration experience with these companies not only enriched
IC’s capabilities but also opened up the possibility of pursuing further
collaboration and support to the industry via the setting up of an advanced
research manufacturing centre with Boeing.

司 (CASL)。 合 作 的 內 容 十 分 廣 泛 , 例 如 流 程 及 系 統 開
發 、 專 業 工 程 設 備 開 發 、 人 才 培 訓 等 等 。 其 中 , 工 業
中 心 與 香 港 航 空 發 動 機 維 修 服 務 有 限 公 司 的 合 作 便 早
於 二 零 零 二 年 開 始 。 由 於 合 作 成 果 豐 碩 , 工 業 中 心 在
二 零 零 六 年 提 名 香 港 航 空 發 動 機 維 修 服 務 有 限 公 司 為
理 大 科 技 及 顧 問 有 限 公 司 「 尊 貴 夥 伴 獎 」 得 主 。 在 二
零 一 二 年 工 業 中 心 再 次 提 名 該 公 司 為 理 大 科 技 及 顧 問

Advanced Manufacturing
Research Centre (AMRC) Model
Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) was first
established in Sheffield, UK in 2001 as a £15 million collaboration between
the University of Sheffield and aerospace giant Boeing, with support from
Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund. The
AMRC Sheffield is run by its members for the benefit of all. Membership
of the AMRC is open to any company which works in a complementary
area or which wishes to participate in the support of AMRC’s research
programmes, subject to AMRC board approval. In the 12 years since being
established the AMRC Sheffield has moved to a purposely built site and
has tripled in size. It has over 70 Tier 1 and Tier 2 members. Such success
has led to Boeing opening further centres based on the original Sheffield
model.
In the past ten years Boeing has set up a number of research centres over
the world. Each Boeing Centre specialises in a specific aerospace discipline.
Information and expertise can be pooled from the global network of
Boeing research centres. Other Boeing Centres in the world are located in
UK, Germany, Brazil, Singapore and Australia.

建 成 。AMRC 是 以 會 員 制 形 式 運 作 , 旨 在 造 福 所 有 會
員 。 只 要 是 屬 於 行 業 互 補 的 企 業 , 又 或 是 希 望 參 與
先 進 製 造 研 究 中 心 選 定 的 研 究 項 目 的 企 業 , 獲 AMRC
董 事 會 通 過 便 可 成 為 會 員 。AMRC 成 立 至 今 僅 十 二
年 , 已 由 原 址 遷 到 另 一 個 特 別 建 造 的 新 址 , 規 模 為 最
初 成 立 時 的 三 倍 。AMRC 目 前 有 超 過 七 十 個 一 級 及 二

The AMRC in Singapore and Australia were both newly established and it is
something not even heard before in the Greater China. The idea of setting
up an AMRC in Hong Kong serving Hong Kong, China, cities and countries
nearby was developed and proposed by IC’s new Director Dr Stephen
O’BRIEN.

Two years ago IC and a local MRO company were trying to solve a technical
problem but little progress was achieved. The problem was brought to

the attention of Dr O’Brien who immediately recalled similar situations
he encountered when he was working in BAE Systems years ago. “As a
Tier 1 member of AMRC Sheffield, the BAE Systems is able to seek help
from them. AMRC Sheffield is equipped with different advanced machines
and facilities. They are capable to propose solutions, test-run in their
machines and solve our problems without interrupting our operations.
That is really helpful and important to us,” said Dr O’Brien. “IC has been
collaborating with the local MRO companies for so many years. If PolyU
IC could set up an AMRC or similar research centre in Hong Kong, it would
definitely benefit industry. Relevant research findings generated by PolyU
researchers can also be applied in some application-oriented research
projects undertaken by that research centre.”

Six visits by eight Boeing
experts in two years
IC started to approach Boeing in early 2011. Dr O’Brien
contacted personnel within the AMRC in UK and they suggested we
contact Mr Bart MUNSTER who is the head of AMRC’s worldwide in the
US. Mr Munster gave us the green light to contact Mr Al BRYANT, former
Vice President, Boeing Research & Technology China, whom Dr O’Brien
then met at the Asian Aerospace International Expo held in Hong Kong in
March 2011. Dr O’Brien proposed establishing a joint research centre by

PolyU and Boeing to Mr Bryant. To Dr O’Brien’s surprise, the feedback of
Mr Bryant was very positive and the first meeting with Boeing was set in
June 2011 in Beijing, China.
The first official meeting in Beijing was encouraging and opened up
further dialogue with Boeing. With the strong support of PolyU senior
management and in particular PolyU Council Chairman Ms Marjorie
YANG, IC immediately started discussing with potential partners and
stakeholders, including HAESL, Zhuhai Aviation Industry Park (ZAIP),
Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks and Government’s Innovation and
Technology Commission (ITC). Every party showed great interest in such
proposal but the view of Boeing on the proposal was the most crucial factor
of all. In July 2011, Boeing sent its first representative, Dr Shanying ZENG,
Chief Scientist, Research & Technology, Boeing Seattle, to visit PolyU IC.
This very first visit was extremely crucial to IC. If Dr Zeng’s evaluation of
the PolyU IC had been negative, the file would have been closed no doubt.
The concerted hard work and effort paid off. The feedback from Dr Zeng
was very encouraging. She was very impressed by the multi-disciplinary
nature of IC and in particular its sound track record in working with MRO
companies and in aerospace projects. She was further convinced after
visiting IC’s industrial partners including HAESL and HAECO. Yet a single
positive evaluation is just not enough for a giant aerospace company like
Boeing to make such a substantial R&D investment decision. Since then
Boeing has been sending technical experts and senior representatives to
visit and further evaluate the PolyU IC. The evaluation of Dr Zeng was once
again confirmed by these experts and senior representatives.
Support from the Hong Kong Government was also crucial in the setting up

of the proposed ASRC. Boeing was highly concerned about the standpoint
of Hong Kong Government. In fact, support from Hong Kong Government
was an important consideration for Boeing. Representatives of PolyU
and IC had several meetings with the ITC concerning the application of
government funding and a meeting with the Financial Secretary was also
held in February 2012. The Government strongly supported the proposal.
It was already more than a year since Dr O’Brien’s first meeting with Mr Al
BRYANT, former Vice President, Boeing Research & Technology China. In
April 2012, Mr Marc ALLEN, President of Boeing China visited PolyU IC, the
sixth visit of Boeing senior personnel. One month later, IC was finally asked
to submit a Business Case to Boeing in May 2012.
Persistence was rewarded at last. In August 2012, we finally knew we were
successful when the MOU from Boeing reached the hands of the PolyU
President. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between

我 們 的 堅 持 不 懈 最 終 獲 得 回 報 。 二 零 一 二 年 八 月 , 終
於 傳 來 好 消 息 。 波 音 正 式 把 合 作 備 忘 錄 送 到 理 大 校 長
手 上 。 理 大 與 波 音 於 同 年 十 一 月 在 政 府 官 員 及 業 界 代
表 的 見 證 下 正 式 簽 署 合 作 備 忘 錄 , 設 立 全 港 首 間 「 航
空 服 務 研 究 中 心 」。
Focus on MRO
The continual discussions with Boeing and stakeholders
decided the focus of the new research centre. Boeing believes
MRO services and research is desperately needed in China in view of its
fast growing aviation market. IC on the other hand, has years of experience
working in aerospace projects especially related to MRO. Although Hong
Kong has some of the best MRO service providers, these service providers
also face difficulties resulting in particular from the upsurge of new and
advanced technologies and materials now being used in aircraft. A lack of
skilled manpower is another issue slowing their development.
According to the China’s Civil Aviation MRO 12 th Five-Year Development
Guidance released in 2011, the need for MRO service in 2015 is expected
to increase by 70% – 100% as compared to 2010. China still lacks of the
capabilities and skilled labour to provide high value-added, advanced
and core MRO services. For example, 70% of aircraft engines in China
are repaired by MRO companies in surrounding countries. Only 29% of
advanced and high-valued added MRO services are provided by China’s
MRO companies/units.
The ASRC (Aviation Services Research Centre) will focus on MRO and it will
be the only Boeing research centre to specialise in this area. It is the stated
aim of the new Boeing ASRC to become the de facto centre for all new and
cutting edge MRO research and development for the whole of China and
Asia and to ensure that the local aerospace industries are able to take full
advantage of such to the benefit of their competitive position. In addition
to providing technical solutions in MRO, ASRC will also help to train skilled
manpower for the industry.

的 發 展 。
中 國 民 用 航 空 局 的 《 民 用 航 空 維 修 行 業 「 十 二 五 」 發
展 指 導 意 見 》 指 出 , 中 國 民 航 將 會 繼 續 保 持 較 高 的 增
長 速 度 。 二 零 一 五 年 中 國 民 航 的 維 修 工 作 量 將 較 二 零
一 零 年 增 加 百 分 之 七 十 至 一 百 。 然 而 目 前 中 國 比 較 缺
乏 先 進 航 空 器 部 件 的 維 修 能 力 及 技 術 人 才 。 例 如 中 國
民 航 百 分 之 七 十 以 上 的 發 動 機 需 送 國 外 維 修 廠 進 行 翻
修 工 作 。 在 工 程 設 計 能 力 要 求 高 、 產 品 附 加 值 較 高 的
維 修 項 目 中 , 國 內 維 修 單 位 僅 具 有 百 分 之 二 十 九 的 部
附 件 維 修 能 力 。
航 空 服 務 研 究 中 心 是 波 音 唯 一 專 門 從 事 航 空 維 修 服 務

Aviation Industry
香 港 特 區 政 府 支 持 航 運 業 發 展
The 2013-14 Budget [1] announced by the Hong Kong Government
saw its determination to support the local aviation industry. The
Government proposed to support training for the local shipping
and aviation industry by designating ”$100 million to establish a
training fund for maritime and aviation transport, so as to sustain and
expand various schemes and scholarships, and to implement other
new initiatives. This will help attract young people to enroll in related
skills training and degree programmes and join the industry upon
graduation, providing a wealth of vibrant and competitive talent for
the industry”.
Apart from this, the Government also proposed to provide six
universities (including PolyU) with a subvention of up to HK$12
million each through the ITF for a period of three years from 2013-14
onwards to support the work of technology transfer.
The Financial Secretary also showed his great support for the
establishment of ASRC in his Blog [2] . He said the local MRO
companies are all facing serious shortage of manpower in particular
skilled manpower. He strongly encouraged young people to join the
aviation MRO industry.

最 高 可 獲 撥 款 一 千 二 百 萬 元 , 支 持 他 們 技 術 轉
移 部 門 的 工 作 。

Latest progress
The future ASRC premises in the PolyU campus will accommodate
a variety of technical workshops equipped with advanced and
state-of-the-art facilities to support its aviation and MRO research services.
Applications for the proposed funding were submitted to ITC at the end of 2012.
A further 8 project proposals were submitted to ITC recently, making a total of 13
project proposals awaiting ITC’s approval. ASRC is looking forward to the final
approval of the project proposals and funding in order to start the second
stage of the preparation work.
Although full-scale operation can only be started upon the completion of
the new premises, the planning team has already started the preparation
and ground work. Some achievements have already resulted. Two
companies, Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited (HAECO)
and Hong Kong Aero Engine Services Limited (HAESL), have officially
registered their intention to subscribe to Tier 1 membership and several
others are under negotiation. The first Board of Governors’ meeting
chaired by Boeing was also held in March 2013.
The ASRC planning team’s office is currently located within IC. Recently
IC has also cleared one of its workshops on the Ground Floor to make
room for ASRC’s initial research development work. A list of machines and
facilities has been developed and will be purchased once the ITC funding is
available to ASRC.
Boeing and PolyU are now planning an official opening ceremony later this
year.

Representatives of the Industrial
Centre (IC) paid a visit to the Civil
Aviation Department’s new headquarters
at the Hong Kong International Airport
on 21 January 2013 to update themselves
on the latest progress of the outcome
of a concerted effort between IC and
Civil Aviation Department in the study
of air traffic control console and their
improvement.
IC was appointed in 2008 by the Civil
Aviation Department (CAD) of HKSAR
Government to develop new control
consoles for the Air Traffic Control
Centre and Control Tower of the Hong
Kong International Airport. The scope
of work included human factor studies,
configuration design, layout design,
appearance design and lighting design.

During the two year project period,
a multi-disciplinary IC design team
studied the impact of the new airspace
control process proposed by the
CAD for the console design, and the
measures to improve the efficiency
of aviation operators and to reduce
fatigue and avoid accidents. With the
help of CAD console users, the IC team

With the assistance and support of CAD, the
IC team undertook comprehensive analysis of
the control tasks, ergonomics, user habits, and
diurnal difference in lighting conditions. During
the two-year project period, IC team members
have conducted many on-site experiments and
collected many ergonomic design parameters

The design and configuration standard
later became a part of the technical
specification for CAD’s new air traffic
control centre construction project. New
air traffic control consoles based on the
design and configuration standard from
the improvement study were recently
installed in the newly built control room
at the new headquarters of CAD. The
official opening of CAD headquarters was
recently held on 23 May 2013.
The fruitful outcome encouraged CAD
to pursue further collaboration with IC.
During the visit, CAD proposed other
forms of collaboration with IC. We are
now considering incorporating potential
projects into our student training.

High quality manpower is the key
to success for every company
and industry. For those industries and
companies whose business is in or
related to engineering and technology,
development of the engineering skill
of its staff members is of particular
importance.
The Industrial Centre (IC) has been
providing technical skills training for
some of the most important industrial
companies in such areas as MRO,
infrastructure and energy for the past
several years. Tailor-made training was
recently provided for the Hong Kong
Aero Engine Services Limited (HAESL)
and for Towngas.
On 28 December, the last working day of
2012, IC’s Director Dr Stephen O’BRIEN
was found enthusiastically checking
some mini-lathe and mini-milling
machines in an IC technical workshop.
He was inspecting not the quality of work
of IC staff members but the output of
group projects undertaken by ten HAESL
trainees who were undertaking their last
day of training at IC.
Ten HAESL trainees joined a 16-week
tailor-made training programme offered
by IC started in September 2012. The
training included three parts, namely,
basic machine operation training,
project-based integrated training and
advanced project-based training, all
aimed at nurturing the practical handson
skills of HAESL’s newly recruited
trainees, particularly in machining
technologies and processes. Other
aspects such as team work spirit, time
management, and work attitude are also
emphasized in the training.
HAESL has been sending its newly
recruited trainees to undertake IC
training for the past several years.
Similar to HAESL, Towngas has also been
sending their newly recruited trainees to
undertake IC training so as to strengthen
their hands-on skills and knowledge on
different engineering technologies and
processes.
Fifteen trainees from Towngas have
also undertaken a 14-day tailor-made
training programme offered by IC in
March 2013. The trainees were given a
task by their company – to make a gas
iron. To complete their task successfully,
they were first given training in design
review and safety. They then went
through different technical workshops,
including Machining, Rapid Prototyping
& Manufacturing, Welding, Photochemical
Machining, Hot Metal, Plastics,

中 心 過 年 多 年 來 同 樣 為 煤 氣 公 司 的 新 入 職
員 工 提 供 特 定 培 訓 , 藉 以 加 強 員 工 在 工 程
技 術 和 流 程 方 面 的 動 手 能 力 和 知 識 。
煤 氣 公 司 在 二 零 一 三 年 共 派 出 十 五 名 員 工
參 加 工 業 中 心 舉 辦 的 培 訓 課 程 , 為 期 十 四
天 。 煤 氣 公 司 特 別 為 他 們 安 排 了 一 個 任 務
─ 製 造 煤 氣 熨 斗 。 要 完 成 任 務 , 學 員 首 先
要 完 成 設 計 及 安 全 培 訓 , 之 後 在 不 同 車 間
學 習 不 同 的 工 程 技 術 , 包 括 機 加 工 、 快 速
原 型 及 製 造 、 焊 接 、 光 蝕 刻 加 工 、 熱 金 屬
處 理 、 塑 膠 、 鈑 金 、 電 腦 數 控 加 工 以 及 表
面 處 理 。 學 員 最 後 把 在 每 一 個 車 間 學 習 及
製 造 的 零 部 件 按 設 計 進 行 裝 配 , 成 為 煤 氣
熨 斗 。 所 有 培 訓 、 製 造 和 裝 配 工 作 均 需 在
十 四 天 的 培 訓 內 完 成 。
工 業 中 心 一 直 為 本 地 多 間 以 工 程 為 業 務 核
心 的 大 型 企 業 提 供 特 定 的 培 訓 , 例 如 以 航
空 維 修 、 基 礎 設 施 、 能 源 等 作 為 主 要 業 務

高 職 院 校 培 訓 課 程
業 中 心 過 去 數 年 為 內 地 的 中 職 院
工 校 、 高 職 院 校 及 高 校 提 供 各 類 型 的
師 資 培 訓 服 務 。 在 積 累 了 數 年 的 經 驗 後 ,
目 前 不 但 參 與 的 院 校 及 地 區 省 份 正 不 斷 增
加 , 中 心 亦 不 斷 改 良 課 程 的 模 式 和 內 容 ,
以 更 切 合 內 地 院 校 和 國 家 發 展 的 需 要 。 中
心 目 前 舉 辦 的 課 程 有 課 堂 授 課 的 , 也 有 專
門 在 車 間 培 訓 的 , 讓 學 員 親 自 動 手 實 踐 。
培 訓 時 間 由 數 天 至 兩 周 不 等 , 根 據 培 訓 內
容 及 各 院 校 的 要 求 而 決 定 。 個 別 院 校 在 過
去 數 年 一 直 派 出 領 導 及 骨 幹 老 師 來 港 參 加
課 程 。 他 們 給 予 了 許 多 富 建 設 性 的 意 見 ,
對 於 中 港 兩 地 高 職 教 育 之 交 流 和 發 展 作 出
了 很 大 的 貢 獻 , 亦 有 助 工 業 中 心 進 一 步 了

完 結 後 工 業 中 心 更 會 為 院 校 作 課 程 總 結 ,
並 在 課 程 完 結 後 的 一 段 時 間 內 派 員 到 院 校
了 解 培 訓 課 程 是 否 能 為 院 校 帶 來 幫 助 。 因
此 , 中 心 平 均 每 年 只 能 舉 辦 約 九 至 十 二 個
課 程 。 課 程 亦 必 須 要 預 早 排 期 方 能 安 排 。
工 業 中 心 於 二 零 一 二 年 全 年 共 舉 辦 了 十 一
個 課 程 , 參 加 院 校 合 共 四 十 一 所 , 合 共 人
數 四 百 二 十 五 人 。 於 二 零 一 三 年 一 月 至 五
月 期 間 共 舉 辦 了 五 個 課 程 , 參 加 院 校 合 共

每 當 聽 到 內 地 教 師 表 示 面 對 「 應 試 教 育 失 敗 者 」 授 課 很
難 從 中 獲 得 工 作 成 就 感 時 , 筆 者 就 會 自 然 而 然 地 想 到 新
加 坡 的 北 爍 學 校 , 北 爍 學 校 的 教 師 在 培 育 「 應 試 教 育 中
最 最 失 敗 的 失 敗 者 」 的 過 程 中 卻 能 獲 得 無 比 的 成 就 感 和
滿 足 感 。
北 爍 學 校 收 生 按 學 生 公 開 考 試 成 績 分 數 排 名 , 收 錄 成 績
最 差 的 學 生 , 若 連 續 兩 次 公 開 考 試 不 合 格 的 學 生 將 被 優
先 取 錄 。 有 一 次 , 有 一 位 報 考 該 學 校 的 學 生 不 被 錄 取 ,
其 家 長 跑 去 詢 問 林 豔 卿 校 長 (Chua-Lim Yen Ching) [1] 到
底 該 學 生 在 哪 方 面 不 夠 好 而 導 致 不 能 被 取 錄 。 林 校 長 回
答 :「 不 是 不 夠 好 , 而 是 不 夠 差 。」

筆 者 非 常 敬 佩 北 爍 學 校 的 林 豔 卿 校 長 。 林 校 長 不 但 不 斷
努 力 幫 助 一 批 又 一 批 「 應 試 教 育 中 最 最 失 敗 的 失 敗 者 」
重 新 振 作 、 重 拾 自 尊 、 重 獲 信 心 , 林 校 長 還 同 時 讓 該 校
的 教 職 工 認 識 到 原 來 培 育 「 應 試 教 育 中 最 最 失 敗 的 失
敗 者 」 的 意 義 是 這 麼 巨 大 的 。 北 爍 學 校 的 教 育 理 念 及 其
教 職 工 的 使 命 感 使 其 教 師 們 在 培 育 「 應 試 教 育 中 最 最 失
敗 的 失 敗 者 」 的 艱 辛 過 程 中 獲 得 了 無 比 的 成 就 感 和 滿 足
感 。
「 人 生 不 如 意 事 十 之 八 九 」 是 常 態
筆 者 很 喜 歡 北 爍 學 校 校 歌 裡 的 其 中 兩 句 歌 詞 :
There may be times when things just don’t
turn out right;
I do believe that I can make a change and
shine out bright.
在 人 生 的 路 途 上 無 可 避 免 會 遇 到 磕 磕 碰 碰 的 時 刻 ,「 人
生 不 如 意 事 十 之 八 九 」 是 人 生 的 組 成 部 份 。 只 要 勇 於 面
對 不 可 逃 避 的 困 難 並 努 力 解 決 這 些 困 難 , 人 生 路 上 即 使
遇 到 不 如 意 事 最 終 亦 必 定 能 柳 暗 花 明 又 一 村 。
