Yazwa Dedicates Life To Young Children
five separate clubs and taking a struggling organization
with little board and community support into one that
completed its first campaign bringing in $7.2 million, a 15
He was honored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America
on technology; developing a charter school; merging multiple organizations to better
serve community and enhance the ability to raise resources; developing the community
development block grant program into his overall facilities; implementing the first incentive
program and staff development plans within the Boys & Girls Club movement; and raising
Hartman Retires After
41 Years In Education
Dr. James Hartman (’65) completed 41 years in
public education when he retired as superintendent of the
Shikellamy School District, Shikellamy, Pa., in June.
An article by Amanda Keister in the Sunbury Daily Item
reported Hartman started as a classroom teacher and
pursued a career in administration because of a desire to
have a greater impact on the lives of students and their
programs.
Following his graduation in 1965 with a degree in
social studies, he spent 20 years with the Halifax School
District, and while there, he earned a master’s degree of
education, with a major in history, from Shippensburg
University. He later earned a doctorate of education
from The Pennsylvania State University with a major in
educational administration.
Hartman’s first superintendency was in 1985 with
the United School District in Armagh, Pa. He remained
there until 1993, when he came to Shikellamy. His goals,
according to the article, were: school construction,
improving the district’s financial outlook and improving
student discipline.
The construction completed included two elementary
schools, an administrative center, and a renovation of the
high school. Even with all the projects, he left the district
with a fund balance of about 5.5 percent, achieved
through tax increases and careful spending practices.
Hartman is quoted in the article, “Our intent always
was to have enough of a fund balance to see us through
from year-to-year. It’s been a cooperative effort between
teachers and building principals to see that those things
happen.”
Under his direction, the district added full-day
kindergarten, a JROTC program and multiple courses,
and maintained its art and music programs and three
world language courses that begin in sixth grade.
“This is my 41 st year, well beyond the necessary year
for retirement in Pennsylvania,” Hartman is quoted. “I just
decided to move on to something else. It seemed like a
good time.”
Hartman and his wife, Jeanne, reside in
Northumberland. They have two grown sons, Paul and
Bart.
Lori (Berk ’92) Sabatose, a member of the Clarion
University tennis team as an undergraduate, is making an
impact as the current team’s coach.
Sabatose’s 2006 team received the National
CLARION AND BEYOND
Koehl To Continue Antibiotic Resistance Research
Dr. Jennifer (Schmidt ’97) Koehl has completed her
research on antiobiotic resistance in bacteria at St. Vincent
College with the aid of a College Faculty Development
grant. She is an assistant professor of biology at St.
Vincent.
The question of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has
been the subject of her academic research since she
was a graduate student. Her research is titled, “Protein
changes in vancomycin-resistant and vancomycin-sensitive
Staphylococcus Aureus under non-stress and stress
conditions.”
“Antibiotic resistance is one cause of emerging
infectious diseases, diseases that have an increased
incidence rate in the last 20 years,” Koehl explained.
“Understanding the mechanisms of resistance can aid
in education about antibiotic use, in the production of
new antibiotics or vaccines to fight infectious bacterial
diseases, and in the understanding of the evolution of
microorganisms.”
Much of her research was conducted last summer on
campus and analyzing the data took months. She submitted
her final report in June. This semester, Koehl has been
on one-course release time for conducting research and
preparing a grant.
She said of her findings, “Basically, what I found is
different types of bacteria respond differently to different
stresses, and that seems to be in keeping with the accepted
understanding that different strains can become resistant to
vancomycin by different mechanisms. That, of course, has
frightening implications.”
In addition, Koehl’s research has provided opportunities
for student involvement. She has had students act as
research assistants as well as helping students with senior
research projects. The students she oversees are known
as the “Koehl Lab” and they are often brought together for
brainstorming at lab meetings and on social occasions as
well.
Although Koehl loves research, her true love lies in
teaching. Last year, she was recognized with the Fr.
Quentin Schaut O.S.B. Award as an outstanding junior
faculty member. In addition, she has developed laboratory
manuals, presented on strategies for teaching biology
to visually challenged students and new approaches
to teaching classes and labs for non-major biology
classes. She is the author or co-author of seven scholarly
publications and has received grants, including two Saint
Vincent Faculty Research stipends.
Koehl earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from
Lycoming College, her master’s degree in science from
Clarion, and a doctorate in the biological sciences at Illinois
State University. She resides in Greensburg, Pa., with her
