A league all our own
When New Zealand’s All Whites drew 1-1 with
defending champion Italy during the group stage
at the World Cup, the world drew a bewildered
breath and the international media went wild.
Like the New Zealand team, Keppel must draw on
collective strengths and outperform competitors,
even competitors who may be stronger and more
experienced.
Although the All Whites did not make it through
to the finals, they left the field with their heads
held high.
They were ranked 78 in the world and were playing
in the World Cup for only the second time yet they
equalised with Italy and in their final game, drew
with favourite Paraguay. They also finished higher
than Italy and were the only team that went home
undefeated.
More than financial muscle, we must remind
ourselves that within the Group and across the
globe, we have resources, network and rich
experience. We can muster and leverage these
vantage points that are Keppel’s.
Keppel’s four decades of scoring achievements
have proven that we, too, have both the strategic
leadership and united workforce to continually
deliver over and above expectations.
In a nutshell, New Zealand was consistently
punching above its own weight in every single
game it played.
The All Whites’ surprising performance can be
attributed to two main factors, the first being bold
exemplary leadership and the second, a united
team.
We are led by captains of industry who have grown
with the group through years of challenges and
triumps and are bent on passing on their rich
knowledge and experience to equip a new
generation of Keppelites. And we have a people,
driven by a strong Keppel culture and spirit, who
are focused on our common goal to deliver value
and achieve excellence.
While Captain Ryan Nelsen was defending the
New Zealand goal, he had to rely on the strength
and unity of his team for the rest of the field, and
they did not disappoint.
In the words of our Keppel Corp CEO, it’s not about
star players but a stellar team at Keppel who will
keep punching above its own weight to stand out
in a league all its own.
When faced with seeming giants, the All Whites
rose to the challenge and performed in a league
beyond their own.
4 Sustaining Growth Growth
Breaching new depths in the
offshore wind energy sector
Keppel FELS commercialises its new wind turbine installation vessel design for
deeper waters in partnership with leading fleet owner and operator, Seafox Group.
Keppel FELS’s new multi-purpose self-elevating platform, KFELS MPSEP, is set to redefine the way in which offshore wind farms are installed and maintained across the world
Keppel FELS’s multi-purpose
self-elevating platform
(MPSEP) design has been
chosen by the Seafox Group
(Seafox) as the basis for
a new-generation wind
turbine installation vessel
that can withstand harsh
offshore environmental
conditions all year round in
water depths of 65 metres
(m) in the North Sea.
Compared with existing
wind turbine installation
vessels and the majority of
those under construction,
the vessel using Keppel FELS’s
design can operate in some
45%-deeper waters, while
reducing downtime even in
extreme storm conditions,
thus providing a potentially
longer operational window.
The KFELS MPSEP, designed
by Keppel’s research and
development arm, Offshore
Technology Development,
has the distinctive ability over
other existing vessels to
install and maintain heavy
wind turbine foundations,
such as the jacket and tripod
types, especially in deeper
waters. With a large carrying
capacity of up to 12 turbines
at a time, it enhances the
efficiency of constructing
offshore wind farms.
In addition to being wellsuited
for servicing offshore
wind farms, it also meets
all the stringent operating
regulations of the offshore oil
and gas industry and
can support a wide range
of related activities such
as accommodation, well
intervention, maintenance,
construction and
decommissioning.
Mr Wong Kok Seng, ED of
Keppel FELS, said, “The
offshore wind energy market
holds good potential for
installation and maintenance
vessels that can operate over
long periods in deeper
waters beyond 45 m.
“The KFELS MPSEP will offer
Keppelite I August 2010

Sustaining Growth 5
significant advantages in
terms of safety, operations,
time and cost to operators
working in these harsh
environments. By
overcoming the typical
limitations of the existing
fleet in the market, this
advanced vessel will redefine
the way in which offshore
wind farms are installed and
maintained across the
world.”
The US$220 million KFELS
MPSEP vessel will be built
and owned by a 75/25 joint
venture (JV) company that
was formed between Keppel
FELS and Seafox respectively.
Seafox has the option of
acquiring Keppel’s stake in
the JV company. The vessel
is scheduled for delivery in
the second half of 2012, and
will be managed and
operated by Workfox BV, a
member of the Seafox
Group.
Mr Keesjan Cordia, MD of
Seafox Contractors BV,
added, “When completed,
this groundbreaking vessel,
named SEAFOX 5, will
address and overcome
critical technical and safety
challenges faced in
the construction and
maintenance of wind farms
in deeper waters, and carve
a critical niche for Seafox
and Keppel.
“In developing and building
this high-value asset, it is
imperative for us to
collaborate with the most
reliable and experienced
offshore partner for the job.
Keppel FELS’s proven design,
construction expertise and
commitment to on-time and
within-budget deliveries
sealed our decision to
partner them.”
Combining Keppel’s
experience as the world’s
foremost rig designer and
builder, and Seafox’s
deep insights as a leading
provider of self-elevating
accommodation and
maintenance support units in
the North Sea, the KFELS
MPSEP vessel is set to provide
a highly versatile and costefficient
solution for the
offshore energy industry.
Energy potential of offshore wind
The European Wind
Energy Association has
set a target to achieve
40 gigawatts (GW) of
offshore wind in the
European Union by 2020,
and 150 GW by 2030.
Offshore winds tend to
flow at greater speeds
than onshore winds, thus
allowing turbines to
produce more electricity.
Although a good majority
of existing offshore wind
farms are located in water
depths less than 45 m,
those coming online are
expected to move further
offshore and into harsher
environments such as the
Central North Sea, where
wind speeds are higher
and more constant,
thereby requiring more
robust solutions. There is
also an increasing trend
towards heavier wind
turbines with larger
capacities.
The UK expects to install
about 8,000 offshore wind
turbines in the next decade
to achieve the Round 3
offshore wind energy goal
of delivering 15% of the
country’s electricity needs
by 2020. Of these 8,000,
it is estimated that some
2,700 would be required
at water depths greater
than 45 m. The KFELS
MPSEP vessel is among
the first on order
worldwide that is capable
of fulfilling this water
depth requirement.
Mr Wong added, “We have
successfully developed and
commercialised many
proprietary concepts for the
North Sea region and other
challenging frontiers by
partnering our trendsetting
customers in the early stages
of those projects.
“This new KFELS MPSEP
design is an example of how
we have been able to
leverage and apply our
market knowledge and
technology expertise
innovatively for a variety of
offshore applications.
Moreover, in working with
an experienced fleet owner
and operating partner such
as Seafox to launch our
design, we will have a good
head start in developing our
track record as the choice
solutions provider for the
emerging offshore wind
energy sector.” keppelite
The stern block is being prefabricated
in Singapore for
sister company, Keppel FELS
Brasil, which secured the job
last year to upgrade and
repair three of Noble’s Brazilbased
drillships.
The rest of the work scope
is to be undertaken at
Keppel’s BrasFELS yard in
Angra dos Reis, which
involves the fabrication,
repair and replacement of
components, including the
accommodation blocks,
New lease of life for 27-year-old rig
The overhaul of the rig
involved the refurbishment
and expansion of the living
quarters. The rig also
underwent major steel
replacement, as well as
installation of four new
column sponsons for
enhanced stability. Finally, a
painting programme gave
the rig a pristine finishing.
Ian Chin, Project Manager,
Keppel FELS, said, “Crucial
to the success was a
combination of watertight
project planning and
management, which
enabled engineering and
production work to be
carried out speedily and in
close tandem, safely and
smoothly.”
MG Hulme Jr restored to mint condition by Keppel FELS
Deepwater semisubmersible
drilling rig, MG Hulme Jr,
plied thousands of miles
from Gabon, Africa, to
Singapore’s shores early this
year for an overhaul
programme.
Despite the long distance it
had to travel, Transocean, the
owner of the 1983-built
vessel, chose to have its
special periodic survey, life
extension and refurbishment
programme carried out at
Keppel FELS in Singapore.
Restored to mint condition
safely and within budget, the
rig departed from the yard
on 11 August 2010.
Mr Andy Hobbs, Project
Manager, Transocean, said,
“We are pleased to have
performed the MG Hulme Jr
2010 Out-of-Service project
at Keppel FELS. The entire
Keppel FELS project team
worked very closely and very
well with the Transocean
project team.
“The Project Manager, and
especially the Project
Superintendent, deserve
praise for their high level of
customer service and Can
Do! attitude. I believe it was
a good decision to bring the
MG Hulme Jr to Keppel FELS
for this project.”
A team of engineers was
flown on location to carry
out pre-engineering work.
Hence, before the rig arrived
in Singapore, countless
sketches had already been
done and converted into
construction plans.
This method allowed for
the early engineering,
procurement and
prefabrication of the new
accommodation tier, all
ready to be integrated into
the existing living quarters
even ahead of rig arrival.
Making cities sustainable
and liveable
In conjunction with the
Shanghai World Expo,
the Urban Redevelopment
Authority organised an
urban planning forum on
“Making Cities Sustainable
and Liveable” in Shanghai
on 30 July 2010 at the
Pudong Shangri-La Hotel.
Displaying its competencies
in sustainable development
and environmental
engineering, the Keppel
Group had an exhibition
booth at the Forum, which
drew participation from
government urban planning
agencies, architects,
investors and developers
from both Singapore and
China.
Speaking at the Forum,
Mr Mah Bow Tan, Minister
for National Development,
Singapore, shared that there
is an opportunity for Asia to
evolve its own model of
liveable and sustainable cities
for the world – cities that are
vibrant yet sustainable, high
in density yet liveable.
China’s success in achieving
both vibrant growth and
liveability will make a
tremendous positive impact
on cities throughout Asia,
including Singapore.”
Amongst world-renowned
architects who presented at
the Forum was Mr Daniel
Libeskind, who showcased
Reflections at Keppel Bay
as his residential masterpiece
in Asia. The model of
Further progress in Tianjin Eco-City
The month of August saw
more progress in the Sino-
Singapore Tianjin Eco-City
(Tianjin Eco-City) project.
FILIPINO DEVELOPER
LAUNCHES FLAGSHIP
PROJECT
On 3 August 2010, Sino-
Singapore Tianjin Eco-City
Investment and Development
Co., Ltd. (SSTEC) joined
hands with the top
integrated city developer in
the Philippines, Ayala Land,
Inc. (Ayala Land), to develop
Ayala Land’s flagship project
in China.
The collaboration involves
a 9.78-hectare project
estimated to cost RMB1.5
billion which will be home to
more than 1,100 households
when completed in 2013.
Development will commence
by end 2010.
As part of the gateway of the
Tianjin Eco-City’s Start-Up
Area, this development will
be among the first that
visitors will see as they enter
the Eco-City. Located near
the commercial centre
surrounding the first light rail
transit station, Ayala Land’s
development is strategically
co-located with the Eco-
City’s first international
school.
To be designed by leading US
design consultant, AECOM,
this project will strive to
achieve at least the Silver-
Award standard of the Eco-
City’s Green Building
Evaluation Standards (GBES).
SSTEC and Ayala Land have
also signed a Memorandum
of Understanding to explore
co-development
opportunities in the eco-
Central Business District,
which will be the highlight of
the Phase 2 development of
the Tianjin Eco-City.
SUPPORT FROM WORLD
BANK
In mid-August, the World
Bank approved the grant of
US$6.16 million from the
Global Environment Facility
(GEF) to China to support the
development of the Tianjin
Eco-City, and to help China
develop a resource and
energy efficient, low
greenhouse gas emission
model city.
The grant will be used to
help the local authorities
establish legislative,
institutional, financial, and
monitoring systems to
facilitate the implementation
of the Eco-City’s masterplan.
The promotion of green
transportation and
architecture is also listed as
an area of focus. Established
in 1991, the GEF is today the
largest funder of projects
that aim at improving the
global environment.
Jointly developed by expert
teams from Singapore and
China, the Eco-City’s
masterplan aims for at least
20% of total energy
utilisation to be in the form
of renewable energy
by 2020.
Average energy consumption per capita of the Tianjin Eco-City is expected to be more than 20% lower than that of other cities in China
To achieve that aim as well
as energy conservation, the
Tianjin Eco-City emphasises
energy efficiency in
manufacturing, construction
and transportation, and
proactively develops and
utilises wind, solar,
geothermal, biofuels and
other renewable sources of
energy. All buildings in the
Tianjin Eco-City are also
required to achieve GBES
grading. keppelite
Reaching for the sky
In an interview with The Straits Times, Keppel
Corporation CEO Mr Choo Chiau Beng shared
how an engineering education can open up
the mind to endless possibilities.
With more Singapore youths
preferring business-related
studies over an engineering
one, Mr Choo Chiau Beng
recently gave a timely
reminder on the merits of
having an engineering
education.
“It is easier to learn anything
after engineering,” said
Mr Choo. “Engineers cannot
run away from fundamental
laws, for instance, the law of
gravity. Everyone can see
their mistakes. A bridge falls
down, a building collapses,
and a plane drops from the
sky.”
He elaborated that
engineering is a broad
discipline that combines
science, technology and
materials to meet human
needs. It trains the mind to
engage in life-long learning
and use numbers to make a
precise analysis of “what is
good, better or best.”
However, Mr Choo also
highlighted that scientific
discoveries are useless if
they cannot be translated
into practical applications
through engineering and
technology. A wellengineered
product with
lasting value will pass the test
of time.
“You can succeed if you are
numerate, literate, a team
player, and have the drive
and energy to work hard.
Engineering gives you this
discipline,” said Mr Choo.
“You can reach for the sky
to pursue your ideals while
your feet are firmly on the
ground.”
Mr Choo’s comments were
made to The Straits Times,
which was commissioned by
the Singapore Economic
Development Board (EDB)
to develop an eight-part
series entitled “Leaders of
Change.”
This is part of EDB’s initiative
to encourage more people
to take up the field of
engineering. The feature
on Mr Choo was published
on 17 July 2010.
Mr Choo himself had
benefitted from an
engineering education. He
received the Colombo Plan
scholarship and graduated
with First Class Honours and
a Master of Science degree
in naval architecture from the
University of Newcastle upon
Tyne. His studies taught him
more than just the basics of
designing, building, repairing
and operating marine vessels
and other structures. They
also laid the foundation for
him to develop the ability
to make sound decisions
based on first principles and
reality.
ship repair and conversions
and specialised shipbuilding.
He further highlighted that
although universities are
important, the role of
polytechnics should not be
overlooked. They train
technicians and other middle
management staff, helping
to build Singapore’s strength
in different fields of
engineering and other
professions. Mr Choo
commented that similar to
universities graduates,
polytechnic graduates can
also get good starting pay
and build successful careers.
keppelite
The Straits Times noted that
Mr Choo’s commitment to
fundamental first principles
was reflected in his career as
a naval architect, corporate
leader and educator.
Thanks to his engineering
background, Mr Choo was
confident of the future of
Keppel FELS even during the
long depression in the
offshore and marine industry
in the 1980s and 1990s.
“We decided that Keppel
FELS should stay in the
business. We saw
opportunities in the future,
we have the expertise and
when there is an upturn in
the market, we can hit the
ground running.
“We have a very strong
competitive advantage in
building and designing
jackups, oil rigs, specialised
vessels, ship repair and
conversions. If I were trained
purely as a financial man,
I could have sold Keppel FELS
and the shipyard business for
a quick return,” commented
Mr Choo.
Because of Mr Choo’s
foresight, Keppel is now a
global leader in offshore rigs,
Passionate about education
It is common knowledge
that Mr Choo is passionate
about Keppel. But a less
well known fact is that he
has a deep commitment
towards improving the
standards of education in
Singapore. Mr Choo
served as Chairman of
Ngee Ann Polytechnic for
nine years, and currently
sits on the Board of
Trustees of the Singapore
University of Design and
Technology (SUTD),
Singapore’s latest
university.
In the interview with
The Straits Times, Mr Choo
said that the SUTD will
train leaders of design
teams who can provide
engineering solutions for
Singapore to compete in
the global arena.
He added that Singapore
could offer cheap labour to
attract investments from
multinational companies
in the past, but it cannot
Training of leaders to provide engineering solutions will help Singapore compete in the
global arena
do this now when it is
competing in the premier
league of competitors.
The new university, he noted,
will develop people with a
strong understanding of
engineering, science and
technology who can lead
design and project teams to
come up with new products,
processes and innovations.
Education and training of
leaders will help Singapore
compete in the global
arena.
Mr Choo noted that there
was a shortage of such
talents in Singapore. To
meet this need, he said
that the university will
provide training in designs
for sustainable living,
architecture, products,
power grids, pipes, water
and other engineering,
computer and information
technology systems.
Meeting of minds
Some 50 senior executives
from across the world
convened at Keppel Offshore
& Marine’s (Keppel O&M)
headquarters in Singapore
from 10 to 11 August 2010
for Keppel O&M’s biannual
strategy meeting.
The world has barely shaken
off the dust of the global
financial crisis when they last
met in February this year. Less
than six months since, the
weakened foundations of
economies all over have been
battered again, this time, by
the European credit crisis and
the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Yet, every crisis presents
opportunities for those who
are prepared.
“We must be ready to capture
the right opportunities. Jobs
will not come to us directly;
we must go out and get
them.
“We have to be more
innovative, and sometimes
this means having to take
on more risks,” Mr Choo
Chiau Beng, Chairman of
Keppel O&M, said at the
two-day symposium.
Even amidst this challenging
climate, pockets of new
prospects are continuing to
emerge in the offshore and
marine industry.
These include rig upgrades
and repair works in the Gulf
of Mexico, and the provision
of customised solutions for
the offshore wind energy
sector and Brazil’s oil and
gas market, to name a few.
“We will need to be bolder,
more imaginative and
creative, working with our
partners, old and new,
to help bring projects to
fruition. We must be
prepared to look at various
ways to do so,” echoed
Mr Tong Chong Heong, CEO
of Keppel O&M.
Reflecting on the importance
of a strong global presence
that will continue to put the
company in pole position to
seize new opportunities,
Mr Choo stressed, “Our Near
Market, Near Customer
strategy is not an option, it
has become an imperative.”
on a national level.
Mr Abu Bakar, Chairman of
the Inter-Business Unit Safety
Committee, said,” We are
very encouraged by the WSH
Council’s recognition of our
safety efforts. These awards
also serve to spur us to take
safety to an even higher
level. We have taken
significant steps to align and
integrate initiatives across
our businesses and I am
pleased to see that we are
getting nearer to our target
where no one gets hurt.”
For all-round safety
performance, Keppel
Singmarine received the
WSH Performance Silver
Award for the fourth year in
a row while Keppel Seghers
NEWater Development
bagged its first.
Winning the Outstanding
Achievement and Innovation
Award was Keppel Sea Scan’s
mobile barrier which
prevents workers from falling
over the edge of modular
cabin tops while working on
a 2.5-metre high cabin. With
its quick set-up time and
adjustable design for cabins
of different sizes, the barrier
provides a safer working
environment and helps
increase productivity.
A WSH Award for
Supervisors was also given
out to Sima Ram, a foreman
at Keppel FELS, who leads
by example by putting in
constant effort to mentor his
workers on safety procedures
and taking appropriate
measures to reduce risks.
To emphasise safety
ownership, Keppel had
reinforced the need to look
out for one another with its
Safety Starts with Me,
Together We Care campaign
in 2009. The campaign had
introduced the Safety
Buddies scheme in which
workers are responsible not
only for their own safety but
also for those working with
and around them.
Of the challenges ahead,
Mr Bakar added, “In our
journey of achieving and
sustaining our safety
performance, one of our
challenges is to ensure that
our large and multinational
workforce are able to
communicate effectively
with one another and imbibe
the same safety standards.
“We empower our
workforce to remove at-risk
behaviour and conditions
and intervention.” keppelite
by Keppel.
Chairman of Keppel
Corporation’s Board Safety
Committee Mr Sven Ullring
visited the Reflections
at Keppel Bay work site on
19 July 2010 to gain an
overview and better
understanding of its
operations and safety
practices.
Mr Ullring was given a
comprehensive tour of the
work site, where he met
some workers from Woh
Hup, the main contractor for
Reflections at Keppel Bay,
and observed how Keppel’s
subcontractors also adhered
diligently to the Group’s
safety standards.
Prior to the visit to Reflections
at Keppel Bay, the Keppel
Land Management Safety
Committee had given
Mr Ullring a presentation
detailing their Safety
Management System.
reaffirm its commitment to
safety.
New safety initiatives were
launched at the seminar,
among which was a hazard
reporting programme that
is designed to facilitate
prompt responses and
appropriate actions to all
safety hazards identified by
both subcontractors and
employees at the shop
floor.
Another initiative
encourages KIE’s staff to
constantly take a standdown
during their work to
review their work conditions
and EHS procedures so as to
identify and eliminate any
unsafe workplace practices
and conditions.
All these new initiatives are put
in place by the management
to institutionalise safety
practices so that potential
hazards can be detected and
eliminated before they result
in accidents.
By the end of the seminar,
the message that workplace
safety requires constant
vigilance by management
and employees alike was
reiterated. keppelite
Building a formidable fleet
Keppel FELS is on track to deliver ENSCO 8503, the fourth of seven ENSCO 8500
Deployed to aid spill response
As the offshore drilling
industry is set to operate
under a stricter regulatory
environment in the Gulf of
Mexico where stringent
compliance with best oil field
practices will be the
minimum standard, Keppel
O&M stands ready to
support clients who need to
meet these new
requirements through its
global network of yards and
expertise.
Two Keppel-built rigs are
currently deployed in the
Deepwater Horizon spill
response in the Gulf region.
They are deepwater
semisubmersible drilling rig,
Development Driller III, and
semisubmersible service
platform, Q4000, which
were built by Keppel FELS
in Singapore and Keppel
AmFELS in the US
respectively.
Since its deployment on
2 May 2010, Development
Driller III has carried out its
work expediently in
intercepting the Macondo
well. Thereafter, the crew
onboard will verify
whether the Macondo well
has been successfully
cemented at the top, and
will then proceed with a
bottom kill and final
cement job.
The Q4000 is presently
performing the static kill
operation to plug the
Macondo well from the
top. It is doing so by
pumping mud into the well
at various stages as the
crew monitor and control
the pressure levels in the
well. To date, Q4000 has
pumped about 2,300
barrels of mud into the
well to push the oil back
into the reservoir.
When all seven ENSCO 8500 Series ® semisubmersible drilling rigs are completed, Keppel-built
rigs will make up a third of the leading driller’s premium fleet
I am very heartened to learn that
the first two ENSCO 8500 Series ®
units, ENSCO 8500 and 8501,
which we delivered, have become
the only two deepwater rigs to be
re-permitted to return to drill in the
Gulf of Mexico under the new and
stringent requirements imposed by
the US government.
perform well in the spill response in the Gulf of Mexico
Empowering Lives 27
Networking for young leaders
A new initiative that was
launched by Mr Choo
Chiau Beng, CEO of Keppel
Corporation, in July this
year, Keppel Young Leaders
(Keppel YL) held its first
networking activity, a lunch
cum movie screening of Salt
on 14 August 2010.
Attended by more than a
hundred young talents, the
inaugural Keppel YL event
was a hive of activity
as Keppel YL members
interacted with senior
management and one
another, some sharing ideas
and aspirations for the
Group, while others catching
up with colleagues from
the various business units.
Addressing the group of
young leaders, Guest-of-
Honour Mr Choo said,
“Many of us in the senior
management have forged a
big part of our careers in
Keppel, growing and
evolving together as we
navigate the Group through
challenging landscapes. You
are the future and the Group
depends on you to forge
ahead.
“Through Keppel YL, we aim
to provide avenues for wellrounded
development, and
global mindset and a spirit of
innovation and enterprise.
The capable global team
with strong leaders built by
Keppel YL will help take
Keppel into the future.”
In the pursuit of these
programme and activities,
Keppel YL members will have
the support of all levels of
management. Mr Choo said,
“I urge all managers and
Roaring mane event
Keppel represented the Lion City as host of the 23rd ASEAN Council for
Petroleum (ASCOPE) Games from 28 to 31 July 2010.
A roaring start for the 23rd ASCOPE Games 2010 as the country members’ Heads of Contingent exchange pennants, symbolic of friendship and sportsmanship
As the latest affiliate of the
ASCOPE family, Keppel
played host to the rest of the
participating members
during the 23rd ASCOPE
Games recently concluded in
Singapore.
Close to 400 participants of
the Games received a roaring
welcome from its host when
they arrived in Singapore in
July for the annual sporting
event. ASCOPE was set up in
1975 to foster co-operation
within the field of oil industry
amongst ASEAN countries. It
comprises 10 country
members, which are mostly
represented by national oil
companies. Keppel took over
from Singapore Petroleum
Company as Singapore’s
representative to ASCOPE
end last year.
The ASCOPE Games is a
sporting event that members
take turns to host every year.
It serves as a platform for
members to come together
under a fun-filled
atmosphere to foster
friendship and build mutual
understanding. Seven
country members, including
the host, participated in the
ASCOPE Games organised
by Keppel this year.
The sports that were played
at the Games comprised
nine-ball pool, badminton,
bowling, golf, darts and table
tennis.
Despite battling tooth and
claw for supremacy in these
six events, all the participants
had also taken time from the
intense competition to build
friendships and bonds.
During the opening
ceremony, Mr Keith Teo,
Chairman of the 23rd
ASCOPE Games Organising
Committee, said, “When
the Games start, we are
going to be both
competitors and supporters
for one another at the same
time. While this may sound
strange, this is in essence
what the Games are all
about – pushing ourselves to
perform to the best of our
abilities, fairly and with
honesty, and celebrating our
shared passion and fighting
spirit at the same time.
“This could sum up what life
is really about, and also what
ASCOPE stands for. As
companies in the petroleum
or oil related industries, there
will be times when we are
competing, and times when
we need one another’s
support.”
Mr Choo Chiau Beng, CEO
of Keppel Corporation and
also ASCOPE Council
Member for Singapore,
reiterated, “As the evolving
global energy landscape will
present both new challenges
and opportunities to us,
there is much we can benefit
from, if we maintain and
further grow a strong
regional partnership and
band together as ASCOPE.”
At the end of the four-day
event, Malaysia and
Indonesia emerged kings of
the jungle as big winners of
the Games, with each
clinching the championships
of three sports. Nonetheless,
every participant walked
away with winning smiles
and fond memories of their
stay in Singapore, and that
is the best outcome for 23rd
ASCOPE Games 2010. keppelite
Meaning
behind the
mane
Mr Choo Chiau Beng handing the flag over to next year’s host country, Thailand
The 23rd ASCOPE Games
logo features a bold lion
motif, which symbolises the
host venue of the Games –
Singapore, also known as
the Lion City – as well as the
collective vigour of the
organisation’s member
countries.
Team Brunei had a rolling good time during the bowling event
The brush strokes that make
up the lion’s mane, represent
the grouping’s 10 member
countries, namely Brunei,
Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao
PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar,
the Philippines, Singapore,
Thailand and Vietnam. The
bold strokes convey the
strong spirit and essence of
ASCOPE, which is the active
collaboration and promotion
of mutual assistance by
country members for the
development of regional
petroleum resources.
One heart with the nation
As the venue of Singapore’s
first National Day Parade
(NDP), which was held a year
after the country declared its
independence in 1965, the
Padang holds a special place
in the hearts of many
Singaporeans.
Celebrating the country’s
45th birthday on 9 August
2010 at this historical
landmark, citizens turned up
in full force, anticipating a
spectacular show.
For 72 Keppelites from across
the Group, the parade took
on a greater significance
this year because of their
roles as part of the Keppel
Contingent. Filled with pride
by this rare opportunity,
these Keppelites marched as
a synchronised unit at the
parade during the marchpast
to rousing cheers of the
spectators. The contingent
had undergone rigorous
training sessions over four
months for this occasion.
Tok Sok Hui, Logistics
Executive from Keppel FELS,
said, “Being part of the
parade allowed me to be in
the thick of Singapore’s
National Day celebrations.
The atmosphere at the
Padang was electrifying.
“I will never forget this
heartwarming experience of
paying tribute to Singapore’s
progress with an enthusiastic
25,000-strong crowd.”
Part of the Keppel Contingent’s city march route brought them past prominent buildings in the Marina Bay area
A former commando with
the Bulgarian Army, Ivan
Stoytchev, was another
proud participant in NDP
2010. Having stayed in
Singapore for more than
16 years, the permanent
resident was thrilled to be
able to be involved in the
parade as he wanted to do
something for the country
which has given him so many
interesting and rewarding
experiences.
While the engineer from
Keppel FELS found the
marching different from the
Bulgarian style, it did not
deter nor dampen his
enthuasiasm. Ivan said, “It is
very nice to see people of
different ages and races with
one goal – to do great things
for their nation.”
Meanwhile, for Lynette
Chong, an executive from
Group Corporate
Communications, Keppel
Corporation, the greatest
takeaway for her was the
friendships she acquired
during the training sessions.
Lynette shared, “Many in the
contingent have become fast
friends. I believe that the
camaraderie formed with
other members will endure
and extend beyond this
NDP experience.”
Proud of the contingent’s
fine performance at the
parade, leader of the Keppel
Contingent and Yard
Manager of Keppel Shipyard
(Gul), Ivan Lim, said, “All the
hard work we had put into
perfecting our steps has
definitely paid off. I feel
privileged to have had the
unique opportunity to be
part of the parade and I wish
Singapore many more good
years ahead.” keppelite
national flag at the openair
carpark of Keppel
were gathered there to
For 66 loyal employees, it
they were also recognised
Ranging from 10 to 40
Mr Daipi commended them
of the determination and
Mr Choo Chiau Beng,
Chairman of Keppel O&M,
also attributed the company’s
steady performance to the
versatility, dedication and
resilience of its people. “Like
Singapore, Keppel has
remained fighting fit. We
have developed a versatile
and well-rounded workforce
with multiple skill-sets and a
wide range of expertise that
can be fully deployed across
the Group,” he said.
He also acknowledged the
contributions of older
personnel, especially those
who have been with the
company for many years,
and those who have rejoined
after retirement. Presently,
Keppel O&M has about 120
re-employed older workers.
Mr Choo highlighted,
“Older employees play an
important role as mentors
to our younger generation
of employees. By passing
on Keppel’s core values
and experience to the
younger staff, they help
to ensure good continuity
and succession in our
workforce.”
Thanking the unions for
working hand in glove with
management to take care of
staff welfare over the years,
Mr Choo also emphasised
the continual need for a
cohesive workforce to help
the company to remain
competitive.
Mr Foo commenced his
Fresh sights for new Keppelites
At the Group Orientation
held on 17 August 2010,
senior management
extended a warm welcome
to a batch of 70 new
Keppelites. This year’s Group
Orientation was different
from previous sessions as
participants were brought on
site visits to the various
business units, instead of
auditorium-style
presentations.
Getting a first-hand view
of the breadth of Keppel’s
businesses, the new
employees toured various
facilities and developments
including Keppel FELS’s
Pioneer Yard, Keppel
Shipyard’s Tuas Yard, Keppel
Land’s Reflections at
Keppel Bay show gallery,
Keppel Logistics’ warehouses
and Keppel Integrated
Engineering’s Ulu Pandan
NEWater Plant.
Incorporating such a tour in
the orientation agenda
provides a quick but
comprehensive overview of
Keppel’s key businesses
in Offshore & Marine,
Infrastructure and Property.
The tour also proved to be
a good platform for the
more experienced Keppelites
to share some of their
experiences working in the
Group with the new hires.
Prior to the site visits, the
participants were introduced
to Keppel’s Vision, Mission
and Core Values. As they
come from diverse
backgrounds and
job functions across the
Group, it is essential that
everyone embraces a
common set of values to
form the foundation on how
work is performed.
One of the speakers,
Lim Ah Cheng, Senior Project
Manager at Keppel FELS, had
been with Keppel for more
than 10 years.
Peppered with interesting
anecdotes, his sharing
session recounted his
journey from his internship
days as a young Keppel
scholar crawling in tanks
onboard oil rigs to his present
responsibilities as a project
manager.
New hire Tri Gunadi Widjaja,
a sales engineer from Keppel
Sea Scan, found the Group
Orientation very useful and
insightful. Brimming with
enthusiasm, he said, “I am
proud to be part of the
Keppel family.
“From the sharing sessions,
I can see that working for
Keppel is more than just a
job – it is also an opportunity
to grow in one’s career
and personal development.
I really appreciate the
orientation as I have made
many new friends and gained
a better understanding of the
organisation.” keppelite
As part of the orientation programme, participants gathered at the Keppel Safety Training Centre to learn more about safety, which is one of Keppel’s Core Values
Clipper Race is indeed the best thing
I have done with my life, as Sir Robin,
Chairman and founder of the Race,
rightly pointed out. Since then, I have
taken on new challenges such as
organising my first charity dinner with
three top Singapore chefs and other
The Clipper Race has indeed been an
unforgettable chapter in my life. I have
learnt to face my fears and that no
obstacle is insurmountable – it is
all mind over matter. I am proud of
the Uniquely Singapore crew and
how hard everyone has worked
throughout the race. We have all
to amplify our Keppel Can Do! spirit
and more importantly, we have learnt
that the seemingly impossible is
actually achievable. After having been
GEARING UP FOR THE
NEXT RACE
Although the Clipper 09-10
Round the World Yacht
Race has just concluded,
17 individuals cannot seem
to wait for the next race to
arrive, having signed up for
Clipper Training Level 1 and
2 as far back as mid-2009.
These individuals, hailing
from places such as New
Zealand, Australia, Hong
Kong and the UK, come from
all walks of life, with ages
ranging from 23 to 71.
They had taken a five-day
break from their day jobs as
CEOs and directors of
companies, ballet teachers
and medical distributors to
rough it out on the high seas
with Keppel Bay Sailing
Academy instructors Tan
The youngest of the group,
Beulah Steele, 23, said, “It
was rather fascinating the
way we weaved in and
out of shipping lanes all the
way to Indonesia! The pace
of the course was just right
and Lynnette was very
helpful.”
CEO of Hermes Capital Sean
Chin Yew, 38, a Singaporean
based in Hong Kong, said,
“In addition to having great
instructors, battling Force 6
winds was the highlight of
my Clipper Training Level 1.
I am very excited to have
embarked on this new
journey with KBSA.”
The Keppel Bay Sailing
Academy is the first academy
in Singapore to provide
sailing courses accredited by
Royal Yachting Association,
the governing body for
water-based activities in
the UK.
To date, the Academy has
organised four rounds of
Clipper training since the
start of the year, among the
other five courses that they
run simultaneously.
Empowering Lives 37
The sporting life
Injecting just as much passion into coaching Singapore’s national canoe polo team
as he does at Keppel, Sean Chan shares his experience both at work and play.
For the uninitiated, canoe
polo is a sport that combines
water polo, basketball,
polo and kayaking. Both a
recreational and competitive
game, the tactics are
similar to those in water polo
and basketball, but the
complexity lies in having to
pass the ball around with the
aim of scoring a goal while
rowing oneself in a kayak.
Sean, GM (Risk and
Regulation) at Keppel Energy,
related how his love for
the game began when he
first discovered canoe polo
by chance during his student
days in Hong Kong. Having
basketball experience, he
took his skills to the water
and has never looked back
since.
Even when he came to
Singapore for work in 1996,
he continued to be an
active player in canoe polo
games and was subsequently
invited to be Singapore
Polytechnic’s coach three
years later.
The Singapore Canoe
Federation got Sean on
board as a coach in 2002
when it decided to form the
country’s national canoe polo
team. Despite a lack of
funding in 2004, he has
stayed on as a volunteer
coach. Although the sport is
a relatively new one, several
tertiary institutions have
taken to it like fish to water.
On top of imparting his
expertise and knowledge,
the father of two enjoys
interacting with the youths
he coaches. Under his
guidance, the Singapore
Polytechnic team has
won the Institute-Varsity-
Polytechnic Canoe Polo
Championships for the past
five years.
Even so, Sean feels that the
skill set should be spread
to other institutions so
that there can be greater
competition. He elaborated,
“I always encourage my
national players to coach
other schools as this will
improve the standards of
Singapore participants
overall. This is also to ensure
that complacency doesn’t set
in amongst those who
always win.”
While coaching provides
Sean with a form of
relaxation, the mental skills
he has acquired through
coaching workshops are
also applicable to work.
“Aside from picking up
tips on concentration and
composure, sometimes you
have to apply positive selftalk
to psyche yourself up
before and during training
sessions or competitions.
Similarly, when faced with a
difficult task or stressful
situation at work, you can
will yourself to think
positively and focus on your
priorities.”
Dedicating his time and passion towards coaching Singapore’s national canoe polo team, Sean (extreme right) enjoys sharing his expertise and
knowledge with the youths he mentors
Keeping up with work,
parenting and coaching may
not always be easy to juggle
but Sean relishes the balance
that these aspects give him
in life. Reiterating the
importance of staying active,
he said, “I think it’s important
to be enthusiastic about the
activities you are involved in
and it helps me to stay strong
mentally and physically.”
Keppelites Abroad
Nestled in Nantong
About 18 years ago, Chen
Liang Bo, a production
manager at Keppel Nantong
Shipyard, arrived on the
shores of Singapore to start
his career in Keppel
Singmarine as a hull officer.
Born in Fujian Province,
China, the cheerful 43-yearold
did not take long to set
up a family on the sunny
island. However, when his
wife began to experience
health problems five years
ago, they reached the
decision that it would be
best to return to China.
Liang Bo recounted, “It
was a difficult decision
to make as I enjoyed
working in Singapore
very much. My family and
I had wanted to make
Singapore our permanent
home.”
Nonetheless, an opportune
moment to return to China
and yet continue working
with Keppel arose when
Keppel Offshore & Marine
acquired a shipyard in
Nantong, which is now the
present Keppel Nantong
Shipyard.
Although Liang Bo left
Singapore with a heavy
heart, he soon found a new
sense of purpose upon
starting work in Nantong.
He shared that as one of the
pioneers of Keppel Nantong
Shipyard, he faced several
challenges as the early
initiatives and working
procedures did not go as
planned.
He elaborated, “Even though
Keppel Singmarine and
Keppel Nantong Shipyard
are sister companies, the
operations of the two yards
are very different in certain
aspects. Our team had to
adopt and apply what we
have learnt in Singapore
and quickly modify these
processes to suit the local
needs.
“The ability to adapt comes
with experience and at the
end of the day, I am happy
to see that our efforts to
strengthen ties and seek
winning relationships with
our Chinese customers and
partners have paid off.”
As a native-born Chinese,
he combines effective
communication and intuitive
comprehension of the needs
of the locals to establish
better relationships with the
working parties involved.
For Liang Bo, it is also
gratifying to see how the
Nantong yard has grown
over the years from a
small team to the current
1,000-men strong workforce.
Teamwork in Keppel
Nantong Shipyard is strong,
while the yard also receives
the support of the Nantong
municipal government.
He may miss local Singapore
dishes from time to time, but
Liang Bo has built a new nest
in Nantong with his family.
As one of the pioneers of Keppel Nantong Shipyard, Liang Bo finds it deeply gratifying to see how the yard has grown over the years
is a blend of multiple
cultures, much like the
diverse group of 42
Keppelites from various
business units and of
different nationalities who
visited the island from 30 July
to 2 August 2010.
During the trip organised by
the Keppelite Recreation
Club, participants soaked in
various sights and sounds
that the cosmopolitan city
had to offer. The 25-minutes
ride on the Ngong Ping Cable
Car across to nearby Lantau
Island offered them views of
the metropolis against a
mountainous landscape and
the sea.
One of the most remote and
scenic areas of Hong Kong,
Lantau Island is home to the
world’s tallest outdoor seated
bronze Buddha statue.
Participants were delighted
to spend a whole day at
Disneyland, where they got
reacquainted with their inner
child as they met some classic
Disney characters and took
the amusement park rides.
Hong Kong also lived up to
its reputation as a shopping
paradise when excited
Keppelites unleashed the
shopaholic streak in them.
Interestingly, the champion
bargainer turned out to be
an Indian employee who
managed to overcome
Keppelites reliving their childhood at Hong Kong Disneyland
language barrier and
successfully slashed prices
by more than half. Talk
about the Can Do! spirit!
After four days and three
nights, the Keppelites
returned to Singapore
recharged, with many fond
memories, countless photos
and, of course, shopping
goods. More importantly,
they also discovered that
the time spent travelling
together was the perfect
platform to bond and get to
know one another better.
Keppel
Heavenly time in Paradise
Funny, colourful and highly
delectable – that was the
kind of night that a group
of Keppel Volunteers
and students from the
Association for Persons
with Special Needs (APSN),
Keppel’s adopted charity, had
at the opening show of the
musical Fried Rice Paradise.
Revival of a local
Singaporean musical, the
show had sold 12,000 tickets
even before official sales to
the public started, but the
APSN students had a chance
to be among the first to
catch it when Keppel
celebrated the launch of the
enhanced Keppel Nights
scheme (refer to pages 41 to
42) on 20 August 2010.
Volunteers use to introduce
arts and culture-related
activities to APSN students.
For many of these students,
watching a musical was an
entirely brand new
experience.
With a storyline peppered
with elements of friendship,
romance, suspense and
twists, Fried Rice Paradise
had the APSN beneficiaries
singing and laughing along
as the plot unfolded.
It was also evident from their
laughter that the local
expressions used in the
musical had struck a chord
with them.
Special post-show
arrangements were made for
the students to meet the
cast. A few could hardly
contain their excitement
especially when meeting
Singapore Idol 2004 Winner
Taufik Batisah, who was one
of the male leads in the
show.
Besides meeting the cast,
they also had the privilege of
meeting Acting Minister for
Information, Communications
and the Arts, Mr Lui Tuck
Yew, making it an even more
memorable night for the
volunteers and their young
charges. Mr Lui also took the
opportunity to learn more
about what APSN does for its
beneficiaries.
“The thrill and experience
of watching a musical are
made possible by the fact
that Keppel Volunteers, as
nominated Arts Kakis
under the enhanced Keppel
Nights scheme, are able to
invite APSN students to
watch subsidised arts
performances,” said Lee
Shwu Huey, Chairperson of
Keppel Volunteers.
“It was a real treat for the
students to be able to meet
the stars. When Taufik hugged
one of the APSN students, that
moment was priceless.” keppelite
Both Keppel Volunteers
and students were gripped
by the dazzling performance
of the talented cast, and
swept away by the elaborate
stage and props, catchy
songs, energetic dance
routines and colourful
costumes of yesteryears.
When the melodic Malay folk
song Rasa Sayang song came
up, the APSN students burst
into applause with the rest of
the audience and hummed
along to the familiar melody.
Held at the Esplanade
Theatre, this event is one
platform which Keppel
Starstruck APSN students were overjoyed to meet the cast of Fried Rice Paradise
