■ ADAY TIRE & AUTO SERVICE
For a relationship built on trust
00741103
Tom Aday, Sr. opened his
wn tire store in 1952 with the
dea that people wanted qualty
tires at a competitive price.
is business was built on the
hilosophy that customer
ervice was always the highest
riority. This tradition is still
arried on today by his son
rian.
Aday Tire & Auto Service
as been a full-line Goodyear
ealer since 1969 and also ofers
the full line of Kelly and
astercraft tires. Our emphais
is on stocking American
built tires. A Sulphur location
was added in 1990, and is
managed by Bobby Koonce.
He is assisted by John Aday,
the family’s third generation in
the tire business.
Both stores offer complete
tire service, under car repairs
featuring the latest in Hunter
Alignment Equipment, and all
maintenance related services.
The Lake Charles store also offers
air conditioning and tuneup
service with Thomas Till.
“Our industry has changed
significantly,” Brian states.
“When I first started, FM radio
was a novel idea. Now my
truck can email me my current
air pressure and oil data.”
Advances such as tire pressure
monitors and computer
controls have greatly changed
vehicles. Yet even with all of
these technological advances,
Brian believes may people
underestimate the importance
of tires to vehicle performance.
“No one item,” he said, “can
affect your vehicle performance
than those mistreated,
under inflated, overlooked
items.”
“We have a commitment not
only to our customers, but to
the ideals on which we were
founded that make us the
best,” says Brian.
luxury cars and SUVs.
Billy Navarre has just completed
a new Chevy Showroom at our
Lake Charles location, and we
At our New Hyundai Facility
best Factory Quick Service we’ve
ever offered in 31 years! We’ll
be able to do 6 oil changes and 6
We’ll do 6 every 15 minutes.
Plus, we’ll include a carwash at
no extra charge for our customers.
We are really excited about
bringing this quick, low price
New Lake Charles Chevy Showroom
Billy Navarre says he is so
thankful for SWLA keeping his
dealership as their #1 choice in
the five parish area year after
year….also being named the
Best Auto Dealer in Lagniappe
Magazine every year that the
publication has come out.
Now that GM no longer builds
Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer, or
Saab, they have promised the
Chevrolet dealerships that Chevrolet
will be a worldwide brand,
and 72% of all of GM’s revenues
will be put into Chevrolet for
research, development and new
products. Chevrolet products
will be renewed every 4-5 years
from now on. At Billy Navarre’s
24 acres in Lake Charles, he
has five franchises. He says,
right now, they have over 40
models with those franchises to
sell. That’s 30 more models that
people can choose from than
what some smaller dealerships
offer. With the addition of the
14 additional luxury cars coming
with Equus and Cadillac,
we should have over 50 models
available within the next 20
months. These are real exciting
times for us!
General Motors cars finished
Billy Navarre, center and sons (L-R) Grant,
Ryan (General Manager at the Sulphur Store), Jareth &
Barrett Navarre work hard each day to ensure that their
customers get the best value for their automotive dollar.
#1 again in the world, making
it #1 in the world 17 of the last
20 years. The Chevrolet Cruze
was the best-selling small car in
America, outselling our hot selling
Civic and the Toyota Corolla!
The Eco Cruze has 10 airbags
and gets 42 MPG, plus it comes
with a 100,000 mile warranty,
and a price of under $17,000.
The Chevy Equinox just won
JD Powers Best Small SUV in
Quality for a three year survey,
beating the previous winner,
our Honda CRV. The all new
Malibu has arrived, and wow…
an unbeatable 39 mpg on the
highway with a ride as smooth
as the Cadillac CTS. “This is the
best riding mid-sized car I’ve
ever driven, and that’s saying a
lot being that I sell the Honda
Accord and the Hyundai Sonata.
I guarantee you, you drive any
mid-sized car out there, and
you will buy the Chevy Malibu.
Unbelievable quiet ride, fuel
economy, plus the 100,000 mile
powertrain warranty,” says Billy
Navarre.
For fuel economy, we have
what you’re looking for…the
Chevy Volt at 94 mpg-unbeatable,
the Chevy Sonic, 40 MPG,
the Chevy Eco Cruze at 42 mpg
and now the new Chevy Malibu
at 39 mpg. We also have four
models in Honda that get great
fuel economy. The new Civic
gets right at 40mpg, and the new
Honda CRV that just arrived,
and is selling like hotcakes, gets
32mpg on the highway.
The Hyundai Santa Fe has a
new model coming. This is a 7
passenger that is absolutely gorgeous,
and the all new Azera, a
car right under the Genesis that
is the prettiest car that Hyundai
has made yet. Hyundai is the
fastest growing brand in America
with America’s Best Warranty.
We have a new Hyundai Genesis
Coupe that has come out this
year, a new Veloster, a new Vera
Cruz and Santa Fe, and all are
going to be hot-sellers.
And when it comes to a car
for the summer, there is no finer
car than our Chevy Camaro
Convertible. It is practical and
beautiful!
Billy Navarre has been honored
with the Chamber SWLA
Citizen of the Year in 2008 and
in 1990. Navarre also won the
Citizen of the Year Award from
the West Calcasieu Chamber of
person in SWLA history to win
the Citizen of the Year Award on
both sides of the river! Navarre
said, “I cherish these awards so
much, especially since I was chosen
business: Jareth is the General
Navarre is Sales Manager in our
my oldest, is currently the
General Manager in the Sulphur
fantastic to have Ryan in the
Sulphur store because he cares
so much about our customers.”
His fourth son, Grant Navarre,
is a sophomore at McNeese and
is working in sales. He began
working part time in the service
lane learning how to service
customers before entering sales.
Navarre said his youngest two,
6 year old twins, Bryce and Kaitlyn,
“are still a little young for us
to know what they will do. We’ll
have to wait and see!”
“I want to thank all the
people of Southwest Louisiana
who have given us such tremendous
support and allowed
us to become their number one
choice when it comes to buying
and servicing their automobile
needs,” says Navarre. “God
has truly blessed me with an
outstanding company, six wonderful
children, 300 outstanding
employees, and I am so grateful
for the wonderful community
in which we live. I am truly
thankful for all of you and every
chance I get I will try to prove
my appreciation to my employees,
my customers, and especially
my community by helping
in every way possible.”
Navarre said, “It’s our goal
to be here another 31 years. We
know the only way that’s going
to happen is if you, our customers,
allow us to be here. The
only way that will happen is to
continually improve and get better
at serving you and that’s our
100% commitment.”

Keith Dubrock, owner of
McKenzie Pest Control, was
born and raised in Southwest
Louisiana, so he knows
well the trouble that pests
cause in our neck of the
woods.
Termites—especially
Formosan termites—take
a heavy toll, chewing up
people’s property to the
tune of millions of dollars a
year. Roaches, ants, spiders,
mice and other critters live
up to the label “pests,” causing
major aggravation when
they invade people’s homes.
When Dubrock talks to
people about roaches, termites
and other pests, he’s
a man with solutions. He
knows these varmints can
be controlled, and McKenzie
Pest Control has the people,
the science and the technology
to do the job. “That’s
why they call us ‘The Home
Protectors,’” he says matterof-factly.
McKenzie Pest Control
was founded in 1951 by
“Stan the Bug Man”—the
legendary Stan McKenzie.
Since then, the McKenzie
name has been synonymous
with the best pest control
available. When Dubrock
became the owner in 1996,
he was determined to
continue that “best pest
control” tradition.
Keith Dubrock, pictured with “Chewy,” the
super-size termite sculpture.
For termites, McKenzie
Pest control deploys the two
most effective systems available:
the Termidor Termite
Defense System and the
Sentricon “Always Active”
Colony Elimination System.
Whatever the termite threat,
one of these systems is the
right choice for total protection.
For other pests, McKenzie’s
pest-control service
is available on a monthly,
every-other-month, quarterly
or one-time basis—
providing just the right level
of protection to tackle the
problem.
Most of all, Dubrock is
proud of his team—the
12 certified, experienced
pest-control technicians
who go out daily to protect
the homes and businesses
of Southwest Louisiana.
“Our technicians are the
greatest. They’re professional,
presentable and
they really care about our
customers. I wouldn’t send
any other kind of person to
your home.”
Dubrock invites anyone
with a pest problem
to call him. Drawing on
McKenzie’s 60+ years of
pest-control knowledge and
experience, he’s confident
that he can offer the best,
most effective and economical
solution to that problem.
Situated downtown in the old
In business for over 40 years,
surviving two major hurricanes
and the Gulf Oil Spill, they try
to remain committed and loyal
to the “old fashion way of doing
things!’’
“We shuck every oyster.
We de-head and peel every
shrimp,” said Sherry. “We also
purchase fresh crab meat when
possible.”
At Sha Sha’s, they strive to offer
the best and freshest seafood
possible.
“We prepare everything from
scratch,” said Sherry.
Sha Sha’s has live music on
Friday and Saturday nights.
Stop in for a fun, casual atmosphere
to enjoy authentic Cajun
food, where even their servers
wear their shrimp boots!
■ GORDON DRUG STORE - EST. 1897
“115 Years of Service”
Gordon’s Drug Store is
ne of the oldest busiesses
in the Lake Area.
t began as a partnership
between Frank Von Phul
and S. W. Gordon in 1897.
The original drug store
operated from the building
which still stands at the
corner of Pujo and Ryan
streets. In 1912 Von Phul
sold his half of the business
to S.W.Gordon.
Gordon’s daughter
Bernice helped manage
the store and opened two
more drug stores around
town. In 1950 S.W. Gordon
received his Pharmacy
Degree. At this time his
grandson, Sonny Gunn
joined Bernice in running
the family business.
Bernice retired in 1970
and Sonny offered his
friend, and the current
owner, George Paret an
opportunity to work with
him after he graduated
from NLU in 1976.
George Paret has followed
the tradition of
personal service and
meeting the customer’s
needs. “It goes without
saying that service really
is our #1 priority.” They
also offer a large selection
■ J&J EXTERMINATING
Protect Your Home from Springtime Pests
J&J Exterminating Has Shielded Louisiana for over 50 Years
The warmer weather
of spring brings more
than flowers and greener
lawns; it also brings several
springtime pests: termites
and mosquitoes.
Termites tend to swarm
in the evenings during
the spring. In our area, we
deal with two different
types of termites: native
and Formosan. Native
termites swarm in early
spring, usually in the
early afternoon. Formosan
termites swarm later in
the spring and in the
evening; they can usually
be found near light sources.
“Formosan termites are often
referred to as super-termites
because of their destructive
ability,” explained Robert
Soileau, manager of the
Lake Charles office of
J&J Exterminating. “One
Formosan colony can do a
lot of damage because of the
high number of termites in
the colony.”
Another nuisance,
especially this spring, has
been mosquitoes. The mild
winter and significant
rainfall has led to an
influx. They are a problem
throughout Southwest
Louisiana but especially
for people living near
waterways.
“We have several mosquito
treatments available;
whether it’s an installed
misting system to keep the
yard free from mosquitoes,
spiders, and other bugs or
we have targeted treatments
that can be applied just once
or monthly,” said Soileau. “It
helps to have it done right
before a backyard party so
people can enjoy themselves
without getting eaten up by
mosquitoes.”
Homeowners can further
reduce mosquitoes by
ensuring their yard isn’t
a welcome mat. Standing
water is an invitation for
mosquitoes. Be sure gutters
are cleared and low spots in
the yard can drain properly.
“If you have a bird bath or
something decorative that
holds water, empty it out
every few days to wash
away mosquito larvae,” said
Soileau.
J&J Exterminating is the
largest Louisiana-based pest
control company. They know
what works throughout
the state. Founded in 1959,
the first office opened in
Crowley. With 10 locations
throughout Louisiana,
including Lake Charles and
DeRidder, J&J Exterminating
keeps homes and businesses
in Louisiana protected
from unwanted bugs. J&J
Exterminating provides free
home or business inspections
to examine the structure
and surroundings and give
recommendations.
“We know what to look
for and what products work
best in our climate,” said
Soileau.
Lake Area Office Products
opened in 2000 as a small,
home-based business remanufacturing
toner cartridges and
providing repairs for office
machines such as printers,
copiers and fax machines. Our
approach was simple: Offer
top-quality products at low
prices, and back it up with a
level of service that none of our
competitors could match.
Over the next four years, that
approach proved so successful
that owner, John Ney, found it
necessary to relocate to a larger
location on Kirkman Street and
expand his staff. This larger
location allowed LAOP to add
a full line of office supplies.
LAOP continued to grow, and
in 2005 we became a business
partner with Toshiba and Samsung.
The following year, after
continued growth, we moved
to still larger quarters, this time
on East Prien Lake Road. This
move allowed us to add Sharp
copiers to our line. We also
brought in a selection of used
office furniture and introduced
temporary leasing on used office
furniture and equipment.
Business has remained
strong. Today we are able to
provide furniture solutions for
businesses of all types and sizes
— from the one- or two-person
organization to major corporations
with 50 offices or more,
all from our 14,500-squarefoot
building on Enterprise
Our priority is the same
now as it has been since
our founding: To give you
the best paper we can,
every day.
Founded in 1895,
American Press was Lake
Charles’ first daily paper.
Its ancestry encompasses
a number of earlier
publications. The paper’s
roots go back to Joseph
F. Reed, who started the
Weekly Press in 1893, and
Guy Beatty, whom Reed
recruited to form the Press
Publishing Co. in Lake
Charles.
Together, Reed and
Beatty turned the
Weekly Press into a daily
newspaper, forming the
Daily Press in February
1895. Beatty sold out after
a year, but later returned
to the scene. Meanwhile,
land developer J.B.
Watkins moved his New
York newspaper, The
American, to Lake Charles
in 1897. It became the
Daily American. Beatty
and partner W.E. Krebs
then bought out another
paper, The Commercial.
The Daily American and
the Daily Press went
head-to-head, eventually
mergingin 1910 to
become the Lake Charles
Daily American Press.
The word, “Daily” was
dropped in 1912.
In 1943, Thomas B.
Shearman Sr. purchased
the newspaper from
the heirs of Beatty
and longtime director
Frank A. Smith. The
Shearman family has
owned and operated the
newspaper ever since. The
Phrase,”Lake Charles,”
was deleted from
American Press in 1998
to better reflect the
newspaper’s longstanding
regional coverage.
American Press has
enjoyed its greatest
successes during the
Shearman’s ownership--
achievements that began
with the newspaper’s
crusade in the 1950’s
against illegal gambling
and have since included
national and regional
awards in all facets
of news gathering,
including Pulitzer Prize
nominations for writing
and photography and top
honors for excellence in
news and advertising.
American Press now
delivers news for readers
with additional platforms,
Chuck Coleman relocated
the store to the Moss Village
Shopping Center in
2009, where they stayed
for two and a half years.
This was a busier location
and led to their needing
to expand a second
time.
They are now located
on Ryan Street in Lake
Charles, right in the heart
of the city.
At Le Marché, they
“Le Marché has been a
said Marie.
“It’s definitely been a
formed International
Dance and Fitness in
September of 2011. Sarah
opened the studio to provide
a safe, welcoming,
and pleasant environment
for adults to experience
the joy and benefits of
dancing.
The goal at International
Dance and Fitness is to
promote fitness through
dance.
They offer a variety of
classes to keep you fit
while having fun as well
as technical classes for students
who are interested
in performing. Current ongoing
classes include Belly
Dance, Venezuelan-style
Zumba/Salsa, Yoga, Tap,
World Dance Fitness, Teen
Belly Fusion, and American
Tribal Style Dance!
“I personally love to eat,
but hate to exercise,” said
Sarah. “But dancing is so
much fun, it never feels
like exercise. Plus, dancing
challenges not only the
body, but the mind and
spirit as well.”
The studio welcomes
teens and adults of all ages
and levels of fitness and
experience. Their instructors
are there to show
students how to keep fit
while having fun. They
also provide opportunities
for students to perform
if they wish. Their adult
and teen troupes have
performed and competed
in Lake Charles, Lafayette,
Beaumont, and Baton
Rouge.
There are several great
local dance studios, but
International Dance and
Fitness studio is the only
one primarily for teens
and adults. Their prices
are competitive. The cost
is $5 for a single class, or
$35 a month for all classes
offered. Students pay
monthly or by the class
and there are no contracts.
They offer all classes free
for the first time, so a
student can take the first
zumba class free, and the
first belly dance class fee,
etc.
Their great prices and
safe, convenient location
are two big draws for
students.
“Our studio is also very
beautiful,” added Sarah,
“and we have a wonderful
sprung floor which is gentle
on the body. Exercising
on concrete can damage
knees and backs.”
International Dance
and Fitness will be starting
“Thriller” classes in
late summer to learn the
original Michael Jackson
dance and to perform it
for Halloween. They will
also be having workshops
during the summer for
both adults and young
teens.
Their troupes will be
performing and competing
at various events in the
fall and winter, including
Showstoppers National
Competition in Galveston,
and the Texas Renaissance
Festival in Plantersville,
TX. They will also provide
dancers for “crazy
time” at parties and events
and will host parties at
their studio.
Several of their instructors
have performing and
competition experience in
addition to teaching experience.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran,
Jimbo is proud to say that Jimbo’s
Quick Stop is one of only a
handful of convenience stores
that are still owned & operated
by an American family.
Jimbo and Barbara are in the
process of handing the store
over to their daughter and sonin-law,
Kim and Kevin Primeaux.
Open seven days a week
from 4:00am-10:00pm, Jimbo’s
Quick Stop offers fresh breakfast
sandwiches, homemade boudin,
the best hamburgers made with
real hamburger meat, Hunt
Brothers pizza, and much more
to satisfy our customers hunger.
Jimbo’s Quick Stop takes pride
Our employees take pride
in servicing customers in a
courteous and efficient manner.
satisfying for Jimbo and
his family. Kim and Kevin look
forward to many more years of
serving loyal and appreciative
customers.
In November 2006, they
opened The Spot Bar & Grill in
the rear of Jimbo’s Quick Stop.
They offer weekly entertainment,
town, plenty or TVs for sports
fans and monthly cookouts, The
successful business is always remembering
that the customer is
the number one priority. Jimbo
also understands that treating
his employees fairly is a huge
factor in the success of continuing
to operate his two thriving
businesses.
Kim and Kevin are the second
generation in the Jimbo family
and look forward to continuing
into a 3rd generation in one day
getting their son involved in
their business.
