between Frank Von Phul 

and S. W. Gordon in 1897.

The warmer weather 

of spring brings more 

than flowers and greener 

lawns; it also brings several 

springtime pests: termites 

and mosquitoes. 

Termites tend to swarm 

in the evenings during 

the spring. In our area, we 

deal with two different 

types of termites: native 

and Formosan. Native 

termites swarm in early 

spring, usually in the 

early afternoon. Formosan 

termites swarm later in 

the spring and in the 

evening; they can usually 

be found near light sources. 

“Formosan termites are often 

referred to as super-termites 

because of their destructive 

ability,” explained Robert 

Soileau, manager of the 

Lake Charles office of 

J&J Exterminating. “One 

Formosan colony can do a 

lot of damage because of the 

high number of termites in 

the colony.” 

Another nuisance, 

especially this spring, has 

been mosquitoes. The mild 

winter and significant 

rainfall has led to an 

influx. They are a problem 

throughout Southwest 

Louisiana but especially 

for people living near 

waterways. 

“We have several mosquito 

treatments available; 

whether it’s an installed 

misting system to keep the 

yard free from mosquitoes, 

spiders, and other bugs or 

we have targeted treatments 

that can be applied just once 

or monthly,” said Soileau. “It 

helps to have it done right 

before a backyard party so 

people can enjoy themselves 

without getting eaten up by 

mosquitoes.” 

Homeowners can further 

reduce mosquitoes by 

ensuring their yard isn’t 

a welcome mat. Standing 

water is an invitation for 

mosquitoes. Be sure gutters 

are cleared and low spots in 

the yard can drain properly. 

“If you have a bird bath or 

something decorative that 

holds water, empty it out 

every few days to wash 

away mosquito larvae,” said 

Soileau.

home-based business remanufacturing 

toner cartridges and 

providing repairs for office 

machines such as printers, 

copiers and fax machines. Our

Charles’ first daily paper. 

Its ancestry encompasses 

a number of earlier 

publications. The paper’s 

roots go back to Joseph 

F. Reed, who started the 

Weekly Press in 1893, and 

Guy Beatty, whom Reed 

recruited to form the Press 

Publishing Co. in Lake 

Charles. 

Together, Reed and 

Beatty turned the 

Weekly Press into a daily 

newspaper, forming the 

Daily Press in February 

1895. Beatty sold out after 

a year, but later returned 

to the scene. Meanwhile, 

land developer J.B. 

Watkins moved his New 

York newspaper, The 

American, to Lake Charles 

in 1897. It became the 

Daily American. Beatty 

and partner W.E. Krebs 

then bought out another 

paper, The Commercial. 

The Daily American and 

the Daily Press went 

head-to-head, eventually 

mergingin 1910 to 

become the Lake Charles 

Daily American Press. 

The word, “Daily” was 

dropped in 1912. 

In 1943, Thomas B. 

Shearman Sr. purchased 

the newspaper from 

the heirs of Beatty 

and longtime director 

Frank A. Smith. The 

Shearman family has 

owned and operated the 

newspaper ever since. The 

Phrase,”Lake Charles,” 

was deleted from 

American Press in 1998 

to better reflect the 

newspaper’s longstanding 

regional coverage.

enjoyed its greatest 

successes during the 

Shearman’s ownership-- 

achievements that began 

with the newspaper’s 

crusade in the 1950’s 

against illegal gambling 

and have since included 

national and regional 

awards in all facets

in performing. Current ongoing 

classes include Belly 

Dance, Venezuelan-style 

Zumba/Salsa, Yoga, Tap, 

World Dance Fitness, Teen 

Belly Fusion, and American 

Tribal Style Dance! 

“I personally love to eat, 

but hate to exercise,” said 

Sarah. “But dancing is so 

much fun, it never feels 

like exercise. Plus, dancing 

challenges not only the 

body, but the mind and 

spirit as well.” 

The studio welcomes 

teens and adults of all ages 

and levels of fitness and 

experience. Their instructors 

are there to show 

students how to keep fit 

while having fun. They 

also provide opportunities 

for students to perform 

if they wish. Their adult 

and teen troupes have 

performed and competed 

in Lake Charles, Lafayette, 

Beaumont, and Baton 

Rouge. 

There are several great 

local dance studios, but 

International Dance and 

Fitness studio is the only 

one primarily for teens 

and adults. Their prices 

are competitive. The cost 

is $5 for a single class, or 

$35 a month for all classes 

offered. Students pay 

monthly or by the class 

and there are no contracts. 

They offer all classes free 

for the first time, so a 

student can take the first 

zumba class free, and the 

first belly dance class fee, 

etc. 

Their great prices and 

safe, convenient location 

are two big draws for 

students. 

“Our studio is also very 

beautiful,” added Sarah, 

“and we have a wonderful 

sprung floor which is gentle 

on the body. Exercising 

on concrete can damage 

knees and backs.” 

International Dance 

and Fitness will be starting 

“Thriller” classes in 

late summer to learn the 

original Michael Jackson 

dance and to perform it 

for Halloween. They will 

also be having workshops 

during the summer for 

both adults and young 

teens. 

Their troupes will be 

performing and competing 

at various events in the 

fall and winter, including 

Showstoppers National 

Competition in Galveston, 

and the Texas Renaissance 

Festival in Plantersville, 

TX. They will also provide 

dancers for “crazy 

time” at parties and events 

and will host parties at 

their studio. 

Several of their instructors 

have performing and 

competition experience in 

addition to teaching experience.
