How green buildings impact people,
profits and the planet

Whether breaking ground on a new building or operating/retrofitting
an existing facility, asset managers, property developers, property
managers, and occupants are under mounting pressure to achieve
higher performance with lower capital and operating costs. In addition,
a new awareness for conserving the finite resources of the planet

services, reduced erosion. Green buildings have lower energy
and water usage. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions,
costs, and overall demand on utilities. In addition, traditional
construction practices that ignore the impact on the earth may
create significant negative consequences such as soil erosion
and flooding. Site management, landscaping, and other features
of green buildings can dramatically reduce these problems.
3. Profit - Lower energy use and increased property value.
Reduced energy costs are a major benefit of green buildings.
Measurement, monitoring, and automation of building systems
ensure that equipment is in use only when needed and that
operations function at peak efficiency.
By reducing a building’s operating costs, the net operating income
of that building is increased. According to the New Buildings Institute,
a nonprofit organisation that is working to improve the energy
performance of commercial buildings, increasing a building’s net
operating income increases the building’s appraised value by 10 times
the annual cost savings.
