…”O God, who shows the 

light of your truth to those 

who go astray so that they 

may return to the right 

path, give all, who for the 

faith they profess are 

accounted Christians, the grace to reject 

whatever is contrary to the name of Christ, and 

to strive after all that does it honor. Through 

our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and 

reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, 

one God, for ever and ever.” Reject whatever 

is contrary to Christ! Strive after all that does 

Christ honor! What work we have to do in the 

middle of this summer season!!! Our call to 

prayer this weekend really focuses our 

attention on walking the right path. On that 

path we are called to live in the ways of Jesus 

Christ and to reject whatever is contrary to His 

ways and His truth. The promise for those who 

walk this path….His Life…abundantly and fully 

and forever. Pray for the deeper 

understanding of this truth and His promise 

this week as you go about rejecting what is 

contrary, and striving for whatever gives 

glory to God. 

…This week we welcome almost 300 young 

people along with parents, teen helpers and 

adult staff for Vacation Bible School. It’s a 

great week for our young people to learn about 

the ways of the Lord, and to surround 

themselves with friends and teachers who can 

help them learn His truth and find great joy and 

life in the Lord. Special thanks to all who have 

worked so hard to plan and organize this 

highlight of summer for our young people. 

Please hold all of them in your prayers this 

week. May God speak to their hearts and 

change their lives in the ways of the Lord. 

…Many thanks for the outpouring of 

prayers, and cards, and thoughts for my dad. 

He is on the mend and, hopefully, by the time 

you read this, on his way home after a long bout 

of pneumonia. Your compassion and 

thoughtful prayers were/are a great source of 

support for him and especially for me. Thank 

you so much. 

…Amid caring for my dad and planning for The 

FEST (our diocesan family FESTival on August 

4 th ), these are very busy days for our parish 

community. While there are a few less 

meetings and events (admittedly only a few), 

this is a very active time of planning for the 

upcoming pastoral and school year. I have 

been meeting with so many of our staff and our 

leaders to make sure our parish is poised for a 

strong year of opportunities to grow spiritually 

and in service to the Lord. May the Holy 

Spirit guide and direct all of our efforts. 

…Some highlights of the planning process 

include: 

…Father Larry Richards will be coming to 

Saint Ambrose for our Lent Parish Mission in 

2014. He is an incredible preacher who will call 

and challenge all of us to walk the path of the 

Lord. 

...We will be “Filling the Field” on Saturday, 

October 12, for a HUGE outdoor Mass and 

dedication of the new football field. 

…Plans are in place to start monthly 

community service days to help improve 

homes and neighborhoods in our region. 

…Following the goals of the Pastoral Council, 

we will be engaging in an effort to invite more of 

our members to share their gifts and talents in 

some of our parish ministries. 

…Mission Possible will be completing a Church 

in the Dominican for some of the poorest of the 

poor, and our members will be making a 

beautiful quilt that will sew the bonds of faith 

and stitch the love and care we hold for our 

sisters and brothers in need. 

…The list could go on and on. We are very 

blessed with so many of our members and our 

pastoral staff who are using the summer 

‘vacation’ to help all of us embrace lives 

centered on the Gospel. 

…This coming week I will be leading a 

discussion with some of our members about 

strengthening our care and outreach to the 

imprisoned. The Corporal Works of Mercy call 

us to Visit the Imprisoned and bring them the 

Good News. If you would like to learn more 

about some ideas and plans we are discussing,

…Tonight (before the rains) our parking lot and 

fields were filled with teens who come every 

Tuesday for FIAT volleyball. It’s wonderful to 

see so many spending their summer nights at 

Saint Ambrose. It’s one way of helping them 

form good friendships so they can walk together 

on the path of the Lord. 

…Jurell Sison, our youth minister, has been 

working very hard these past few weeks 

(before his wedding in two weeks) to get both 

the FIAT youth ministry and Confirmation in a 

good place for the coming year. He’s been 

gathering 20-somethings and adults to help him 

support our teens through a vibrant youth 

ministry. If it’s hard for us as adults to ‘reject 

what is contrary to Christ,’ it’s even more 

challenging for our teens as they are flooded 

with distractions. He really needs YOUR help 

in creating a parish that has a special place 

and commitment for our teens. There’s plenty 

of room for everyone. Some cook meals. 

Others lead discussions. Some watch the 

parking lot. A few teach. All care about our 

teens. All are needed. To learn more or 

consider the call to serve this important 

ministry of our parish, please contact Jurell

…I’m excited for August 15 to come and for 

you to have the chance to meet our newest 

faculty member for Saint Ambrose School – 

Rachel Burkey. Rachel has family in Northern 

Ohio and found her way home to be with them. 

She comes to us from Nashville where she has 

been teaching in a Catholic School. She has 

amazing talent in music, fine arts and 

language (she speaks four languages fluently). 

More importantly, she has an incredible 

spirituality and will be greatly enriching our 

school and parish community. Make sure 

you meet her. She will give all of us one more 

huge reason to give thanks to God for our 

parish community. 

…Plans are starting to come together for our 

next building project as part of the Vision 

20/20 plan and capital campaign. We should 

be about two weeks away from sharing the plan 

for office space for our hard working staff, along 

with some additional meeting space. Through 

much discussion and discernment, we are 

looking to place this building on the south side of 

Hilkert Hall adjacent to the current kitchen (thus 

eliminating the need for building a kitchen in the 

new building). It will allow us also to connect 

Hilkert Hall and the Church with the office and 

meeting space. A very good plan is coming 

together that responds to many of our needs 

and priorities (office space, connecting the 

buildings, space for funeral lunches without 

moving students, more storage, and some 

kitchen upgrades). Watch next week for a 

time for us to meet and share the plan. 

...Special thanks to our Women’s Guild who 

work so hard for the good of our parish 

community. This past week they made their 

second payment on their collective pledge to 

our Capital Campaign. I firmly believe that 

God will bless them and all who make such great 

sacrifice for the Lord and our parish community. 

Together…for the glory of God. 

…One clear sign of God’s blessing and 

favor….Last summer we needed dry weather for 

construction of the LC addition. This summer 

we needed rain to water the newly planted 

football field. Take a drive to the Grotto and 

see the field…it is wonderfully alive and will be 

a great place for our young people and 

community to gather in prayer and play. God is 

very good. 

…In these summer days, what do you need to do 

to reject what is contrary to Christ so you can 

more fully embrace the promise of God’s life 

and love Have a great week.

RCIA I N S!! 

Tradions have a special role in family life. 

Celebrang birthdays with a gathering of family and 

friends, accompanied with singing, gis, cake and 

birthday candles serves to create memories filled with 

love. Christmas tradions – baking special cookies, 

decorang the tree and special movies or play 

presentaons which convey the spirit of the season – all 

work together to pass on the “specialness” of the 

Christmas season. Parents have a special role in handing 

on tradions. 

In a similar way, faith tradions have a special 

role in a person’s spiritual life. Prayers serve as a means 

of communicaon with God. Gathering as a faith 

community for prayer and sharing Eucharist is at the 

heart of the Catholic faith tradion. As more of us gather 

at the Table of our Lord, our community of faith is 

strengthened. 

We invite all who are being called to grow closer 

to our Lord through greater parcipaon in our Church. 

Come and learn more about the process of the Rite of 

Chrisan Iniaon of Adults (RCIA) which will meet 

weekly beginning Sept. 18. Come and learn about our 

Catholic teachings and tradions. Come and ask 

quesons. As you learn more and grow closer to God, as 

a parent, you will be able to pass along a deeper 

understanding of our Catholic faith to your children. 

RCIA Informaon Nights will take place at 7 pm in the 

Lehner Center. Come meet our team members and hear 

more about the RCIA process!!

MESSAGE 

FROM JURELL 

Last week we asked the 

question, “How can we make 

church engaging” and the 

complex answer was to speak 

the language of the 

generation. So, here is a 

classic example of one way 

we can speak the “millennial 

tongue.” 

I can count only a handful of 

times that church 

announcements were 

actually exciting. Usually it’s a 

simple reading of the events 

going on in the parish. Now, 

this is not a bad thing—it gets 

the message out there and 

that is exactly what is needed; 

however, the deeper 

question we must ask is: Does 

it catch our teen’s attention 

Let’s explore the question. 

We’ve already talked about 

how our teens feel special. So 

it’s no surprise that teens are 

neither impressed with nor 

persuaded by impersonal and 

routine invitations. Current 

research reports that teens 

hear the announcements but 

rarely consider the 

impersonal invite. After all, 

they are special. Parents and 

much of our society have 

conditioned them to higher 

expectations. So, when a 

church is not giving special 

attention to their young 

people—they know it. They 

can feel it inside and they can 

many times perceive this lack 

of attention as uncaring. 

If you are like me, then you 

know that this cannot

happen. Our teens need to 

know we are dedicated to 

them. We cannot let the 

popular message of 

materialism, consumerism, 

sexism (etc…) steal their 

attention. We must be 

committed to them— 

showing them that the power 

of faith, justice, love, truth, 

mercy, and compassion to 

the other is worth it. 

So what’s the best way to 

invite Old-fashion 

hospitality. Our invitations 

must be personal and heartfelt. 

Such authenticity helps 

our teens to feel special and 

wanted. Which at the end of 

the day—is what all of us 

desire.

In the Gospel today, Jesus addresses the queson, “Who is my 

Neighbor”...the Jr. High teens will be reflecng on this during Camp 

Samaritan, an overnight service –oriented retreat on July 23-24. 

Permission forms are at the church entrance and Rectory Office. Please 

prayerfully consider encouraging your teen to aend. Teach them the ways 

of our Lord! 

You are invited to join our group going to the Lake County Captains game on 

Sunday, July 21st! Mass is at 5pm and the game begins at 7pm. Tickets are 

$7 and the bus leaves St. Ambrose at 3pm. Please pick up a Permission 

Form and return with payment by July 15th! 

The FEST is August 4th; so make plans to join us...we 

sll need volunteers. Go to www.the fest.us to sign up 

to volunteer! There will be concerts, acvies, fun and 

fellowship. The busses will leave St. Ambrose at 12pm 

and 3pm. Please pick up a Permission Form in the Rectory Office to reserve 

your spot! 

Our next (and last) Wednesday Community Service is August 7th! Please let 

me know by August 2nd if can join us!
