Welcome
Happy 35th Anniversary,
Shawano Folk
Music Festers! Thank
you for joining us.
Planning the Festival
has been fun as we
reminisced, brainstormed
and worked
together – from the mentoring seniors to the enthusiastic
newbies. We’ve got great artists this year
- some you know and love, and some you’ve never
heard before. As always, there’s the incredible quilt
rafle, crafts, food, children’s program, buckskinners,
and more. We’ve made a few changes to the
grounds, so make sure you check out the festival
map! Bring your families and friends, and enjoy the
weekend. Come play with us!
On behalf of the entire Festival Committee,
John Domkowski, Nicole Henquinet and Dori Jerger
Thank You
This Festival is possible only because of your support.
We’re grateful to the volunteers and the
Shawano County Arts Council. Thank you to advertisers,
festival patrons, and the donors, sponsors
and supporters, including those whose donations
came after we went to press, and those who wish to
remain anonymous.
Matt Watroba is a folksinger’s folksinger. His voice is
mellow and easy to sing with. He’s got a legendary knowledge of musical
history and his songs about heroes and villains, compassion, strength,
humor and everyday living give audiences no choice but to join in. They’re
songs that you will feel and remember for a long time. Lou Berryman said,
“… If you want to hear what it sounds like to adore folk music, and at the
same time boundlessly appreciate why it’s adorable, Matt Watroba is your
man.” Matt’s appearances at the Shawano Folk Music Festival since 2005
have made him one of our favorite folksingers. Matt is Honorary Co-Director
of the 2013 Shawano Folk Music Festival. More at mattwatroba.com
Lou and Peter Berryman have been Shawano
favorites for most of our 35 years. Peter writes the lyrics and plays 12-
string guitar. Lou writes the melodies and plays accordion. They’ve produced
numerous albums and songbooks of hilarious, quirky, oddly profound songs
about the Midwest, cheese, deer, snow, and cleaning the refrigerator. Their
work appears in publications like the RISE UP SINGING Songbook and SING
OUT! Magazine, and in audio collections. You’ve heard them on A Prairie
Home Companion and NPR’s Weekend Edition. In 2004, their music was featured
in the Madison Repertory Theatre’s production of “Love Is the Weirdest
of All: The Music of Lou and Peter Berryman”. More at louandpeter.com
Caravan Gypsy Swing Ensemble is an instrumental acoustic jazz
group from Madison, Wiscosin, inluenced by the legendary gypsy
guitarist Django Reinhardt. They pull inspiration from jazz, swing,
European folk, traditional Latin, Parisian waltz and other vintage
jazz sources, playing tunes from the Gypsy Swing or “Hot Swing”
repertoire, along with originals and standards. In Gypsy Swing,
guitar and violin are the main solo instruments. Clarinet and accordion
are also commonplace. Rhythm guitar is played using a
unique percussive technique that replaces the drums. An upright
bass ills out the ensembles. Chris Ruppenthal (lead/rhythm guitar),
is joined by Ed Fila (lead/rhythm guitar), Kevin Tipple (upright
bass) and Greg Smith (clarinet). More at gypsyswing.com
Joe Crookston … you expect to hear a guy with a
guitar, a ingerpick and some great songs. You will, but there is SO
much more going on here. You’ll be pulled in by the magic and musical
world that he creates and become part of the show. You’ll travel along
mystical, historical and humorous roads, and twist through personal,
colorful stories along the way. From the irst strum of his 1948 Gibson,
through stories of ruby red dresses, Tinian Island, Dylan Thomas,
Taoist parables and drunken roosters you’ll be drawn in and deeply
moved by his music. Joe Crookston, from Ithaca NY, is Matt Watroba’s
“Director’s Choice.” Learn more at joecrookston.com
Frogwater is the acoustic pairing of John & Susan Nicholson. Renowned
for their musical virtuosity and exuberant live performances, they like to
think of themselves as musical ambassadors. They describe their style as “eclectic
acoustic peoples’ music.” Their repertoire spans styles from Celtic to Delta Blues,
Classical to Pop with a healthy dose of unique original material illing out the mix.
Their innovative interpretations of traditional tunes span the centuries and the
miles and defy categorization. Fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo and voice combine
to form the “little duo that could.” Frogwater has been honored with awards from
the Shepherd Express Reader’s Poll and Wisconsin Area Music Industry (W.A.M.I.)
awards. More at frogwater.us
Mike Mangione & The Union combines a folk-rock sound with an
orchestrated string section, soulful vocals and literate sensibility. Blurt
Magazine refers to their “… tearstained folk, Memphis-styled gospel
and bluesy-lavored pop” as “luminous.” They were such a hit at the
2012 Shawano Festival that we invited them back. Original songs, good
energy and a lot of talent combine to create a sound that’s theirs alone.
The group consists of Mike Mangione (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Tom
Mangione (electric guitar), John Leo Collins (upright and bass guitar),
Patrick Joseph Hoctor (cello, guitar), Kristina Priceman (violin) and Nez
(percussion). More at mikemangione.com
he was recording and composing his own music. His music is inluenced by
70’s progressive rock, the blues of Robert Johnson and Nina Simone, and
classical composers like Glenn Gould and Prokoiev, coming together in a
sound that’s his alone. Clinton is also an accomplished visual artist, putting
his own modern twist on Native art and symbolism. Classics in Shawano is
Eddie Biebel & Vicki Basar are an eclectic, dynamic
mix of Eddie’s earthy baritone voice, Vickie’s smooth vocals, rockabilly,
blues, old-time country, bluegrass, Texas swing and jazz. All of it is backed by
Eddie’s distinctive guitar work. The Milwaukee Journal said, “Eddie’s dynamic
guitar playing and earthy warm baritone blend perfectly with Vickie’s soaring
heartfelt vocals to create something new, fresh and exciting: a seamless mix
of music genres that make for a passionate and powerful performance you’re
bound to enjoy.” Eddie and Vicki call it “acoustic Americana.” We call it wonderful.
35th Annual Shawano Folk Music Festival
50% Folk is ive people from Wisconsin who discovered traditional
music during the folk revivals of the 60’s. Since 2004, they’ve been
singing traditional folk, bluegrass, gospel and old time country, with a few contemporary
folk songs thrown in for good measure. 50% Folk is Mark Bradish
(guitar, banjo, mandolin, dobro, vocals), Barb Colson (autoharp, harmonies),
Tanya Przbylski (lead vocals), Wayne Rippl (guitar, vocals), and Dean Sauers
MainStage Sound
What’s a music festival without sound
Once again, MainStage Sound of Appleton
makes everything you hear sound as good
as it does. You may see the sound crew scurrying
between stages during the day, but
mostly you’ll just hear the magic they work.
John Doxtator has a
quiet demeanor and a heart full of music.
Country, gospel, bluegrass and old-time
music are all part of John Doxtator’s repertoire.
John lives in Gresham, and is a member
of the Green Apple Folk Society.
Kay Kuester-Doran
Central Wisconsin, and a member of Clintonville’s
Steppin’ Sisters Tap Dance Troupe.
She’s a multi-faceted teacher who’s presented
conferences of foreign language teachers. Her
folk dance repertoire includes German, French, Israeli, Spanish,
Costa Rican, Hawaiian, American traditional and “retro” dances.
“Practicing an art, no
matter how well or badly,
is a way to make your soul
grow, for heaven’s sakes.
Now, I mean, I’m talking
about singing in the shower,
I’m talking about dancing
to the radio, I’m talking
about writing a poem to a
friend - a lousy poem.”
Kurt Vonnegut
String Fever is an acoustic
string with members mostly from the Shawano
area. They’ve been playing together
for about 5 years, and have performed at
events in the Shawano area, specializing in
music for barn dances. Members include
Rhody, Eric Roers, Richard Sarnwick, Patti
“A choir is made up of many voices, including
yours and mine. If one by one all go silent
then all that will be left are the soloists. Don’t let
a loud few determine the nature of the sound.
It makes for poor harmony and diminishes the
song.” Vera Nazarian
Buckskinners Rendezvous!
Before 1840, trappers and explorers gathered
from time to time at a Rendezvous to
swap songs and stories, trade pelts, and
rest a bit before going back out. This is a
reenactment of a pre-1840 encampment,
full of trappers and explorerers in period
clothing, spinning yarns, telling tales and
making music. They use the old skills
and sell handmade wares you can’t ind
bit of our history. They’ll be camping at the park all weekend.
