The logo chosen aims to represent the main IESO topics. The marble column symbolizes
the connection between art and Earth Science.
The theme of this edition is the Earth Science Renaissance. Italy is famous for the
Renaissance, a cultural movement that grew in Tuscany, Florence, and then spread
all over Europe. It was an important time of intellectual transformation and
widespread educational reform. Even Earth Sciences need a renewal to grow their
importance all around the world as it is happening with the International Year of
Planet Earth. Renaissance age is famous all over the world especially as far as arts
are concerned. There are strong connections between Earth science and art, a lot of
Earth Science Departments are starting to collaborate with archaeologist colleagues
to study the archaeological site, examine the materials used in building, decoration,
monuments. There are Earth scientists dealing with investigating the quarry used in
the past, studying the mineral inside clay and stone. Weathering affects monuments
and buildings as the rocks in the natural environment. This is just to give some
examples.
In Italy there is a huge artistic and cultural heritage. Analysing the link between
art, environment and Earth Science is a new approach never used before, that could
show and focus on new aspects of Earth science.
IN MEMORIAM - VIC MAYER
Those of you who knew Vic Mayer will be saddened to hear, of his recent passing on Tuesday 26th July 2011, in Colorado. Some will remember the central role he played in supporting the International
Geoscience Education Organisation through running, with Nir Orion and John Carpenter, the second GeoScience Education conference in Hawaii in 1997 (strongly supported by Rosanne
Fortner). You can read about the Honorary Award given to Vic at that conference at: http://www.geoscied.org/awards/mayer.htm Others will know the key role he played in working with others
in the USA to develop a ‘Framework for Earth Systems Education’ that you can read at: http://earthsys.ag.ohio-state.edu/framework.html . To my knowledge, this was the first attempt to define
the Earth science education we would seek for all children, and so is a key marker in the development of Earth science education across the world. Vic also edited two books on ‘Global Science
Literacy’ - bringing together for the first time in book form, the thoughts of a range of geosciences educators across the world and did a great deal in the USA to support the development of
Earth systems education. Vic has played a vital role in the development of geoscience education across the globe and, whilst it sad indeed to realise that he is no longer with us, it is good to be
able to celebrate the legacy he has left us.
IN MEMORIAM – ANTONIO ROSSI
In the afternoon of Tuesday 2nd August 2011 Professor Antonio Rossi passed away, thus not being able to assist the final part of the International Earth Science Olympiad - IESO 2011, which I
believe, knowing his passion for Earth Sciences and his dedication to teaching students, He would have really enjoyed very much. Antonio, professor of Sedimentary petrography at Modena and
Reggio Emilia University, was one of the greatest experts on Modena Apennine that He loved so much and where He used to bring students for unforgettable lectures given directly on the field.
He participated to three field investigations in Antarctica (1990/91, 1999/00, 2004/05), with the specific role of collecting and filing meteoritic samples (264 discoveries) of Extreme Remote
Camps of the Frontier Mountains (Victoria Land, Antarctica) and of studying sedimentary and volcanic sequences in the Victoria Land Region (Ross sea, Antarctica), also leading to the discovery of
a deposit of fossil tree trunks. Furthermore, in one of the rock samples collected by Antonio during his field campaigns, three new zeolites were identified: gottardiite, terranovaite and mutinaite.
All these findings contributed to further increase a well consolidated national and international scientific reputation.
Among international collaborations, particularly relevant for Antonio were the ones with Universidade do Amazonas (Manaus, Brasil) and the Universidade Federal de Goiás (Goiânia, Brasil).
A significant part of Antonio’s scientific activity involved Karstification and mineralogenesis in hypogeal environment in Greece, Italy, Philippines, Brasil and Mexico, not forgetting however his
studies on metamorphic and magmatic rocks from Greenland.
He was one of the promoters of the Naturalistic Museum ‘Ferruccio Minghelli’ in Pavullo (Modena Province).
Antonio Rossi was in the same research team where I moved my first steps as geology student and I will never forget my first positive impression on his human qualities, his nice mood and his
ability in smoothing down situations, otherwise critically affected by physical and mental stress associated to this kind of investigations. He lived his role of teacher as a mission and his ability
of transmitting emotions to students, while explaining a geological event, and of capturing the attention while detailing a stratigraphic sequence, transformed his lessons in an unforgettable
show, which forged many generations of researchers and technicians, always under his motto “students first of all”. For all these reasons, and for commemorating a respected colleague and a
dear friend, colleagues from the Department of Earth Sciences established this prize, delivered by Antonio’s wife, Marga, during the concluding ceremony of IESO 2011.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The International Earth Science Olympiad – IESO, founded by the International Geoscience Education Organization – IGEO http://www.geoscied.org/, is an annual Earth Science Competition
for secondary school students worldwide. The IESO activity intends to encourage international interaction and cooperation among participating students from all over the world and in turn to
promote public awareness on the importance of Earth Science Education. The 5th International Earth Science Olympiad 2011 was successfully held in Italy from September 5th to 14th http://
www.ieso2011.unimore.it/, with the theme: ‘Earth Science Renaissance: science, environment and art’ in order to reflect the unique Italian artistic heritage we have try show the link between
Earth Science and art and cultural heritage, especially during the practical test that took place inside the city centre of Modena.
IESO 2011 is the first IESO edition host outside Asia, were this competition born in 2007, and the first one where all the continent are represented by team or observers. The number of countries
represented almost doubled from 2010 edition.
Including the hosting country of Italy, a total of 217 participants and observers from 34 countries registered for the IESO 2011. There were 26 participating countries with student competition
teams including: Australia, Belarus, Cambodia, France, Honduras, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Nepal, Philippines, Romania, Russia, Singapore,
Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine, United States of America and the 8 observing countries: Argentina, Austria, Cyprus, Malaysia, Malta, Norway, Pakistan, South Africa.
A total of 115 students consisting in 71 were male and 44 female (38%) with an approximate average age of 16,8 participated at the competition.
The Ministry of Education and at the Department of Earth Science of Modena and Reggio Emilia University, for co-hosting and with Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena for generously
giving their full support in many ways to ensure the success of this event. The IESO organization involved 42 people in Local Organizing Committee, 39 in the Scientific Committee, 45 young
universities and school students as staff (4 of them comes from abroad), many others volunteer as the Modena Civil Protection group. All the Italian Earth Science world collaborate for the
success of this event. Several presentation were held around Europe to increase the number of countries participating.
The IESO competition consists of two parts: a written examination and a practical examination. The written test aims to examine the participating students’ understanding of the theoretical
knowledge of Earth Science. The practical examination includes experiments and field tasks designed to evaluate students’ capacity in conducting experiments or solving problems in the field
of Earth Science. The IESO 2011 Practical Test included equipment operation, data analysis, and field survey in the fields of astronomy in the civic planetarium of Modena, atmosphere, and
geosphere test in the Modena city centre and Hydrosphere test in the Venice lagoon.
In addition to the contest activities, related activities such as International Team Field Investigation (ITFI) were organized in the Valle d’Aosta Alps. In order to promote cooperation of team members
from different cultural backgrounds, the ITFI activity regrouped participating students into cross-country teams to conduct field investigations together and to perform group presentations
on the following day in front of the ITFI judges and all the IESO participants. Finally, six outstanding student teams were awarded with the certificates of “Best Cooperation Team”, “Best Creativity
Team” and “Best Presentation Team”.
International Earth Science Olympiad – IESO
The International Earth Science Olympiad – IESO, was founded as one of the major activities of the International Geoscience Education Organization – IGEO.
IGEO is affiliated to and sponsored by International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The aims of IGEO are to promote Geoscience education at all international levels, to encourage and
develop the public awareness of Geoscience, especially among young people and to work on the improvement of the quality of Geoscience education all over the world.
The IESO is an annual competition for secondary school students (students not older than 18 years old on July 1st on the year of the Olympiad). The students have to test their skills in all major
areas of Earth sciences, including geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, terrestrial astronomy and environmental sciences. The theoretical examination includes problems which are
supposed to measure the participants’ knowledge and understanding of Earth science areas. The practical examination consists of tasks which are designed to assess participants’ abilities to
carry out scientific investigations in earth science inquiries. The examinations are prepared by specialists in Earth sciences and Earth science education, who also provide solutions and evaluation
guidelines. Each delegation is composed by 4 students and 2 supervisors. The latter must be specialists in Earth science and Earth science education and capable of serving as members of the
International Jury. The official language of IESO is English; however, the supervisors may translate the written examinations and related materials into to the participants’ native language.
Final Report
The main aim of the IESO is to encourage students’ interest and public awareness of Earth Science and to enhance Earth science learning. With the IESO the organizers hope to pick out talented
and gifted Earth science students and to promote the improvement of teaching Earth sciences at schools. Last but not least, the IESO is developed in pursuit of encouraging friendly relationships
among young learners from different countries and promoting international cooperation in exchanging ideas and materials on Earth sciences and Earth sciences education.
The IESO is the only International Olympiad that includes an International Team Field Investigation – ITFI. The last International Team Field Investigation focused on: developing stratigraphic
sequences, evaluating living on the Mt. Mayon volcano, and evaluating the fault escarpment of the Chi-Chi earthquake. In 2010 in Indonesia the International Team Field Investigation focused
attention on sustainability and use of the underground water. Thus, ITFI turns out to be a special IESO tool to encourage friendly relationships among young learners from different countries and
to promote international cooperation.
IESO Coordinating Committee, as decided at last Meeting, 2011 Sep. 20, in Yokyakarta
The history of the IESO
The idea of the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) was suggested by several Korean earth scientists before 2003. In 2003, Korean Earth Science Society (KESS) organized the first Korean
Earth Science Olympiad (KESO). The second (2004) and the third (2005) KESO were organized successfully.
The IESO was established as one of the major activities of the International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO), during the International Council Meeting held in Calgary, Canada. The
Meeting was part of the Fourth International Conference on Geoscience Education (GeoSciEd IV) in April 2003.
During IGC32 held in Florence, Italy in August 2004, Eduardo de Mulder and Ted Nield of the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) management team agreed to support IESO as one of the
activities of the IYPE.
Seoul IESO Conference was held in November 2004 in Seoul. Representatives from ten countries participated and discussed the earth science curricula and a desirable format of the IESO. There
were made 23 presentations and the IESO Coordinating Committee was established. It was composed by 11 members including the Chairperson, Moo Young Song. The IESO Committee was
renamed the IESO Advisory Committee later on. The Statutes for the IESO were also finalized.
During the first meeting of the IESO Coordinating Committee, held during the Seoul Conference, it was concluded that Korea offered the best conditions and the most favourable atmosphere
for hosting the first IESO. The efforts of the Committee combined with a great personal contribution of Prof. Moo Young Song resulted in the first International Earth Science Olympiad that took
place in Korea in 2007.
In 2005 the IESO Syllabus Commission (Chairperson: Nir Orion) was established and the first draft of the IESO Syllabus was elaborated. The IESO logo was designed and approved by the IESO
Advisory Committee in March 2006
The International Science Olympiads
The International Science Olympiads are worldwide annual or bi-annual competitions in several science topics. Usually the best 4-6 high schoolstudents (15-20 years old) from each country
take part in them.
Even junior students Olympiads exist: International Junior Science Olympiad and even some Olympiads in humanistic area such as:
International Philosophy Olympiad
International Linguistic Olympiad
The science Olympiads are separate competitions, each one with is own organization. The main aims of science Olympiads is to promote career in science and even to challenge brightest students
around the world and to compare the various teaching systems of each country.
The science Olympiad interest born in Europe but move to Asia. As is possible to read in Table 2 till 200 7 science Olympiad born in Europe. From 2000 3 science Olympiad born in Asia. Host an
international Olympiad need a great organization and set a new one even more for the lack of previous experience and the need to plant everything for the first time. That means that a strong
motivation and a strong effort are necessary to set a new one so look like important notice this shift on the set of new Olympiads that means an increase of focus in science education in Asia.
This shift is confirmed even in the number of times that scientific Olympiads are held in each continents. From Table 3 is possible to see that almost 56% of all the science Olympiad were held in
Europe, but if we consider the last 10 years (2001-2010), Table 4, this percentage down to 32%, instead in Asia the percentage up from 30% to 49%.
A group of geoscience educators met in a small restaurant (Uncle Billy’s Hilo Hideaway) in a rainstorm to formalise a proposal for an international association, prompted by Nir Orion.
This proposal was put to the general assembly at the conference, and was enthusiastically endorsed.
This was the formal beginning of an international association for earth science education.
Nir Orion and Chris King agreed to lead a development committee that would, among other things, determine the name of the association
Later, having discussed different names, including the International Geoscience Education Association (IGIA), the name of the new association was eventually agreed as the International
Geoscience Education Organisation (IGEO).
IESO 2011 Preparatory work
The Italian involvement in IESO organization begun with the participation in IESO 2009 in Taiwan, as it was the first selected European team to attend this event. In the same occasion the IESO
coordinator professor Moo Young Song asked to the Italian delegation about the possibility to organize IESO 2011 in Italy. One of the reasons of this proposal was to involve more European
countries in IESO. The first three IESO editions were held in Asia with a major participation of Asian countries, and the move from Asia to other continent was really important to increase the
participation of other countries from all over the world.
European countries are used to attend massively the science Olympiad and that is important especially for a new Olympiad as IESO to grow the number of participant and the international
dimension. By the way Earth science teaching is not homogeneously taught in Europe and that could affect from one side the possibility to participate at IESO from one side, from the other
side could be the opportunity to spread a new science education model and syllabus all over Europe and help to raise the curricula in the country with poor tradition in Earth science education.
Earth science in Europe is taught broadly as follows:
· a small compulsory part of national science curriculum in southern Europe, where is part of natural sciences and generally taught by biology specialist;
· in the UK it is mostly allied to the chemistry part of the science curriculum and is generally taught by chemistry specialist;
· a small compulsory part of national geography curriculum, e.g. In many northern European Countries, such as Germany and Denmark.
· in some countries as Portugal and UK some students could follow additional optional geosciences courses, of a year or longer duration (King, 2008).
IESO could help in the growing of awareness and importance of Earth Science in European national curriculum. By the IESO organization the national Ministry of Education could realize that
Earth Science could be useful to develop an integrated science approach because to solve IESO test is necessary to use in a contextualized situation previous knowledge even on math, physics,
chemistry, geography and some times even life sciences. So the approach by the use of System Thinking (Orion, 2007)
Final Report
Italy has already experience in guest international science Olympiad, indeed Italy guest 3 of the actual ten science Olympiad:
1993, Perugia, International Chemistry Olympiad – ICHO
1999, Padova, International Physics Olympiad – IPhO
2008, Trieste, International Astronomy Olympiad – IAO
When the proposal of hosting IESO 2011 arrived, the organization of International Olympiad in Informatics – IOI 2012 in
Sirmione was already in progress.
IESO 2011 History step by step
1st Find the Local Organizing Committee
March 2010 - Constitution of the first embryo of Local Organizing Committee: Daniela Fontana, Director of Earth Science
Department of Modena and Reggio Emilia University, according with the Rector of Modena and Reggio Emilia University
decide to start to organize IESO.
The Local Organizing Committee is made by Earth science expert of Earth Science Department of Modena and Turin University
and also Ministry of Education delegate, Valle d’Aosta Region, Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali, ISMAR CNR.
The 5th IESO is supported even by Italian Earth Science Federation – FIST, Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca
Ambientale – ISPRA, Italian Commission International Year Planet Earth. and send a letter to the Minister of Education
asking for support.
2nd Find the place
After a quick survey the Local Organizing Committee decided for Modena as a city to host IESO the 5th IESO edition. Modena
is a small city of 183.000 citizens, in the north of Italy. It’s settled in the Padania plan, this plan grow by the sediments
brought by the surrounding mountain by Po river and its affluents. It’s at 34 meters above the sea level and surrounded by
two rivers: Secchia and Panaro. Modena territory in the north is all plain, in the south it shifts from plains to hills and then
to mountains till the maximum height of Monte Cimone at 2165 meters above sea levels. Modena is province (county) seat
and is settled in the Emilia Romagna region bordering the famous Tuscany. It is world famous for Parmiggiano Reggiano
cheese, Balsamic Vinager (Aceto Balsamico di Modena), and Ferrari and Maserati cars: both produced in the city. There is
also an important tiles manufacturing district in Modena province that exports tiles all over the world and employs many
geologists in quarries and in clay analysis.
Modena was chosen as IESO location because there is a Earth Science department interested in Earth Science Education
and in IESO organization and because it’s a quiet city, close to the Bologna International Airport Guglielmo Marconi, just
40 minutes drive from Modena. Bologna airport is well connected to 49 international destinations and 6 intercontinental
destinations.
Choosing the IESO date the organizer took care to avoid religious holidays and set the Olympiad before the beginning of the
main university activities, usually 15th of September, with the purpose to use the university structure for the competition
and the students house to host the students’ teams. September in Modena is autumn season but still quite warm, the
average temperature is between 25 and 16 degrees Celsius and usually around 50 mm of rain fall this month.
4th The theme
The theme of this edition is the Earth Science renaissance. Italy is famous for the Renaissance a cultural movement that
grew in Tuscany, Florence, and then moved through Europe. It was an important time of intellectual transformation and
widespread educational reforms. Even Earth Sciences need a renaissance age to grow is importance all around the world as
it start to do with the International Year of Planet Earth. Renaissance age is famous all around the world especially for the
arts. There are strong connections between Earth science and art, a lot of departments of Earth science start to collaborate
with archaeologist colleagues to study the archaeological site, to study the material used in building, decorations, monuments.
There are Earth scientists involved in finding the quarry used in the past studying the mineral inside clay and stone.
Weathering affect monument and building us the rock in place. This just to give some examples.
Italy is rich of arts and analyse the link between art, environment end Earth Science is a new approach never used in
previous IESO editions that could shine light on new aspects of Earth science.
Ministry of Education Mariastella Gelmini received the IESO 2011 T-shirt during a ceremony at the
Accademia dei Lincei, Rome (Photos Fedor Getman).
20

5nd Find the Money
Organize such kind of events needs a lot of money, the budget of IESO 2011 was approximately of
500.000,00€ but several services were provided for free as service sponsorship and almost all the people
involved in the organization work as volunteers. The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia give human
resources, the place for the test and the place to guest the students delegates for free. The 4th of November
2011, the Italian Ministry of Education in a public ceremony, after receiving the t-shirt with the IESO2011
logo by the IESO 2010 Italian team, announced that IESO 2011 will be hosted by Italy. After this announcement
the Minister of Education funded IESO 2011 as the main sponsor and actively collaborate even with
human resources and technical support.
Another important sponsor of this edition was a local Fundation, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena.
Then with several minor sponsors and the delegation registration fee it was possible to reach the necessary
budget
Final Report
IESO delegation selection and training: the Italian case
One of the obstacles for new countries to attend the IESO is to start the national selection program. The following one is the description of the Italian national selection program for IESO. The
Italian national selection is done by the Italian Natural Science Teachers Association, Associazione Nazionale Insegnanti di Scienze Naturali- ANISN, www.anisn.it ). This association was founded
in 1979 and counts around 1000 teachers as members, mainly teachers of secondary school. Most of the members have degrees in biology, natural science (this has followed academic courses
of biology and geology) and a small part in geology. Natural science teachers in Italy have to teach math and all the sciences at pupils of 10-13 years old and mainly biology, Earth science and
chemistry (sometimes even geography) at pupils of 14-18 years old.
From 2000 ANISN organize the national natural sciences Olympiad and year by year develop the following structures: the same organizer manage two competition one that selects students for
International Biology Olympiad -IBO and the other one for IESO. There are two categories in the competition shared at the moment by age
A) 14-15 years old: questions on Earth science and life science;
B) 16-18 years old: question only in life science.
A categories give access to IESO
B category give access to IBO - International Biology Olympiad
ANISN decided to select students for IESO and IBO in that way because in the Italian School Earth Science is studied at students when they are 14 in some schools and when they are 18 in some
others. The students of 18 years old at the time of the competition are too old according to IESO statute.
In 2010/2011 school year will start in Italy a new school system that puts Earth science at least for one year in all the second degree-secondary schools for at least two hours per week, at ninth
grade post kindergartner (pupils of 14 years old).
In the next few year, according to the new school system, in most of the lyceum school natural science will be taught at least from 2 to 5 hour per week for 5 years (14-18 years old). In Natural
Science subject is included biology, Earth science and chemistry.
So from 2012-2013 Italian students for IESO will be selected even among students of 16-17 years old.
A work group inside ANISN manages the national selection. Usually around October the new call for school to participate at the National Natural Science Olympiad is ready. The school could
download the call for school directly by ANISN website. The call for school is advertise by ANISN member network and by the official communication of Ministry of Education.
The Natural Sciences Olympiad has several steps:
School level: the school applies at the Natural Science Olympiad and select generally 4 students for each category. The selection is managed by science teachers that could make a test or simply
choose the students with the best science assesment.
Regional level: the selected students of each school of each region they partecipate in the same place at regional selection. Regional selection is held the same in day in all Italy.
National level: the selected students from each Region (around 50 students for each category) stays for three days in Napoli (Italy) to take tests and select the students for the international
olympiad.
A national team of ANISN members prepare the regional and national test.
In A) category there is the final list and even a special list made by the best evaluation only in question related in Earth science. The first four will attend at IESO.
During the summer ANISN provide a week of training for the best ten students of A) category in Earth science national test. The students already know the four of them that will attend IESO.
However for all ten this week is something like an additional award and all of them enjoy to spend a week with other smart students with the same interests and to learn more on Earth science.
In 2010 summer the training week was held in Università degli Studi di Camerino (http://www.unicam.it/geologia/unicamearth/index.htm ), organize by ANISN teachers and the Earth science
Department. School teachers and University professor held lectures and practical activities in laboratory and in the field.
ANISN selected students for IBO for the first time in 2008 and for IESO for the first time in 2009. The first italian partecipation at IESO was partially fund by Federazione Italiana Scienze della
Terra Geoitalia Onlus.
All the olimpiads program is partially funded by school that have to pay a small fee and provide the travel expense for teacher and students to partecipate at the regional level and partially by
the Ministry of Education.
on the opening Ceremony of The 5th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO)
Modena, 2011
Dear students,
This year, the International Earth Science Olympiad – IESO 2011 – will be held in Italy. On behalf of the Italian Government, I would like to invite your country to participate in this important
event.
It will be an honour to welcome you in the beautiful city of Modena from the 5th to the 14th of September 2011. Italy was the first European country to take part, with a full selected team,
in the Taiwan games in 2009, and, now, it is the first to host the IESO in Europe.
Italy strongly believes in encouraging friendship among people from different countries, promoting international cooperation, exchanging ideas and materials on earth science and improving
geoscience education in secondary schools.
IESO 2011 offers a unique opportunity to encourage students’ interest in a topic which affects our lives and our presence in the world as human beings. Respecting nature and our planet
is a value that we wish to inspire in all participants.
2011 also marks Italy’s 150th unification anniversary. For this reason, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia together with the Ministry of Education are all the more proud to have
the opportunity to organize the Olympiad this year.
Good luck!
On behalf of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia I would like to convey to the participants of the 5th IESO a warm and cordial welcome.
I also like to express the satisfaction of the University for the decision to hold such an important event in Modena. Through this annual gathering enthusiastic teachers and pupils meet
on a subject that has deep roots.
This ethical and educational initiative that has the merit of maintaining an international focus on key themes such as knowledge and respect for nature, environmental protection, sustainable
development.
The department of earth science in Modena was founded well over 100 years ago, earning a forefront position in many important scientific fields, such as mineralogy, and geomorphology.
Also the school of Geology, now in its 50th year of service, is highly esteemed, as certified by national and international research projects coordinated by the research personnel of the
department in collaboration with groups all around the world. Thanks to the efforts of the teaching and technical staff, working with skill and scientific precision, the Department is up to
date in any progress and development made in this area.
Modena University, one of the oldest in Italy, hence in the world, its roots going back to the Middle Age, is pleased to welcome you. We are sure that in this study field we can offer much
to the young people that will take part at the training and educational activities. Let us also advice you to pay a visit to the collection of our Museum Gemma 1786.
Walking in the old streets of downtown you will discover our valuable cultural and architectural heritage, the Cathedral and its Piazza, a UNESCO world heritage site.
I am sure you will enjoy staying here. My colleagues and I will do everything to make your day pleasant and intense, making it an opportunity of scientific and cultural growth, while
discovering a rich and interesting territory.
I wish to all of you a pleasant, proud to be the first European city and university to host such a prestigious event.
It is a great satisfaction to see so many young students from different countries, with different experiences and cultures here together in Italy in this year, that coincides with the 150th
year of the Italian Unification.
I hope this anniversary, so important for us, will leave you with a sense of sharing, friendship, solidarity and belonging to a world without borders, where different traditions, customs,
ethical or religious beliefs no longer represent an obstacle to dialogue and peace between peoples.
Welcome to the 5th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO-2011)
It is my great pleasure to welcome young students from all over the world to the Fifth International Earth Science Olympiad, the IESO-2011. The Olympiad will be held for the first time on
the European continent, in the beautiful italien host city of Modena.
The IESO is an activity of the International Geoscience Education Organisation (IGEO), which aims to promote geoscience education internationally at all levels, to work for enhancement
of the quality of geoscience education internationally and to encourage developments raising public awareness of geoscience, particularly amongst younger people. To meet these aims,
the IGEO monitors international provision of geoscience education and foster communications between geoscience educators worldwide. It liaises with international and national bodies
concerned with geoscience education, with international professional geoscience bodies, such as the International Union of Geological Sciences (of which it is an affiliate) and with
international bodies concerned with science education.
The main aim of the IESO is to encourage students’ interest and public awareness of Earth Science and to enhance Earth science learning. With the IESO the organizers hope to pick out
talented and gifted Earth science students and to promote the improvement of teaching Earth sciences at schools all over the world. Last but not least, the IESO is developed in pursuit
of encouraging friendly relationships among young learners from different countries and promoting international cooperation in exchanging ideas and materials on Earth sciences and
Earth sciences education.
In the name of IGEO I like to thank the local italien organizers of IESO-2011 for their enthusiastic and very successful work for this important event. I am shure the teams will enjoy their
tasks and have many inspiring experiences!
Modena, 2011
Earth Science Renaissance with the 5th IESO
ust as the Renaissance originated in Italy 6 centuries ago, Earth Science Renaissance will occur with the 5ht IESO in Modena, Italy in Sep. 5th through 14th. It is just because Italy is the host
and organizing country as the leader of the world civilization and culture, and also because the upcoming influence will be extraordinary, especially toward former Communist countries
which still are teaching Geography rather than Earth Science.
Our delegate students from around the world will become great leaders internationally in every specialized field; until now through 4 years’ IESO activity the former participants have
shown their great capability, and since the IESO competition they pioneered their career studying in highly qualified Universities. In near future they will lead and guide the world for
better society, earth environment and space exploration.
Through the IESO, the knowledge competition, practical test and International Field investigation, the participant students will show their brilliant capacity and get good fellowship
between foreign students, along with their sharing their unique cultural heritage.
We, mentors, observers, and all staff welcome our young friends to this event! May your great power be successful!
Final Report
Dear IESO students, mentors, observers, and guests,
Welcome to Italy, for the 5th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO 2011)!
First of all I would like to thanks all the people that I meet in this adventure of organize an IESO edition, from Prof. Moo Young Song that that propose me that after three day that I meet
him in Taiwan, to the staff volunteers that comes from all over the world and in most of the case without any relations with Earth Science studies. Many thanks to the Modena Earth Science
Department that were brave enough to take the responsibility to start the process, to the University of Study of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the Italian Ministry of Education and Fondazione
Casa di Risparmio di Modena that give financial and human support.
Thanks to the Italian Earth Science communities, the Italian natural science teachers associations and local authorities and professional trade unions each one bring to us his specific
competence and positive energy.
And last but not least thanks to all the delegate, you are come here from all over the world, after be successful in your local selection.
Why we are here Why we do all this organizing effort Why we are spending all this money for few hundreds of people Just for love of the competitions Well who really know IESO know
that IESO it’s more about cooperation than competitions. Promoting Earth Science Education worldwide has been a life-long goal for all of us. Even with the aims to contrast the lack of
connexion of human with our planet process, fact that increase by the increasing of urban population and decrease or rural one.
Through the IESO 2011, we would like to wake up interest on Earth as a System in the students that are here but even in the hundreds of thousand of students that participate at the
national selections and to be one step closer to reaching the goal of developing friendships and establishing collaboration among the Earth Science communities from around the world.
