Introduction<br />
Ignition devices combined with inductive ballasts (CCG) are used in<br />
conventional technology for the ignition and current limiting of HI<br />
and HS high intensity discharge lamps. In electronic ballasts (ECG),<br />
all functions for lamp ignition, lamp operation and switching off of<br />
lamps at the end of service life are united in one component. Essential<br />
benefits for operation of HID lamps with ECG instead of with<br />
CCG are:<br />

Energy savings<br />
For comparison of the power consumption and efficiency of high intensity<br />
discharge lamps, the complete life cycle of a lamp must be<br />
considered. Fig. 1 shows the typical cycle of power output of a 150 W<br />
high intensity sodium vapour lamp in relation to burning time:<br />
The coloured part represents the potential for energy savings with<br />
use of ECG. While with inductive ballast operation the increase of<br />
lamp arc voltage leads to increased power consumption, power consumption<br />
with use of ECG remains constant due to integrated power<br />
control during the lamp service life.<br />
