support and example of the Virgin Mary renowned for her openness to
the will of God and her readiness to accept a mysterious future. I hold
that close at this time.
It is an honour for me to be appointed
bishop but it is also an honour for the
Oblates and for Iona and all our works.
I hope you feel this honour too. As
well, I thank you for the many texts,
emails and calls I have received and
for their support and congratulations.
A highlight for me has been the
blessing prayed over me by Fr Paul
Siebert. As I knelt beside his hospital
bed, he prayed for the gifts of wisdom
and courage for me.
An auxiliary bishop helps out a bishop who has a large diocese. There
are four auxiliaries in Melbourne and each gets a region. I will probably
have the eastern region with approximately seventy parishes and
preparing and celebrating confirmations will be a big part of my work
(perhaps fifty confirmation ceremonies a year) as well as visiting
parishes and supporting and encouraging priests.
The Oblates have made it clear that Iona is a valued and important work
in our Province and that they intend to maintain Oblate leadership at the
College. We are grateful to the Provincial and Council for their care for
us.
EMILIA KEENE
NEITA EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD
We congratulate Emilia Keene on
being the second Iona staff member
to be awarded this excellence in
teaching award after Mr Simmers in
2012.
Mrs Keene loves teaching and loves
teaching at Iona College as
evidenced by the fact that she is still
here at her first placement twelve
years later and that she is still
enthusiastic and excited about her
work here. Ironically, teaching was
her back up at Drama school and
she reluctantly entered her first prac
as a twenty-one year old female at
this all-boys Catholic school. And
she loved it. The atmosphere was challenging, fast paced and
electric. Every lesson was different, every cohort presented with new
hurdles, new joys to share in, new personalities to get to know. She was
posted back to the same school for her following prac placements and
became an official member of the College community six months after
graduating.
Mrs Keene tries really hard to ensure that all of her students feel noticed
and valued as individuals. She enjoys supporting students as they learn
new things, gain confidence and overcome their own personal, social
and academic trials. Their success is her success and their buzz is her
buzz.
Well done, Mrs Keene.
SURF LIFE SAVING QUEENSLAND PRESENTATION
Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Chief Operating Officer Mr George Hill
made a special presentation at our College assembly on Tuesday. Our
five students who saved the life of St Lawrence’s student Perry King
during a cross country meet at Iona were recognised for their
achievement.
Kyle Wegner, Joseph Curtin, Perry King, Jim Ham, Daniel Mole,
and Scott L’Barrow .

Please pray for Br Paul Shen O.M.I.
who will be ordained as deacon on the
16 November in our Parish of Sha Tin
in Hong Kong. After training as a
diocesan seminarian, Br Paul took
First Vows as an Oblate in 2011 and
made his Perpetual Oblation on 8
September 2014. He is the first
Chinese born Oblate to make
Perpetual Oblation in forty years.
Br Paul will spend a few months in
Australia in January in 2015 to
familiarize himself with some of the
aspects of our Province before
returning to China to be ordained a
Priest next year.
OLD BOYS DAY
Iona College Old Boys Barefoot Bowls will be held tomorrow at Wynnum
Manly Leagues Club. Cost is $20 per person which includes Barefoot
Bowls and a rib fillet steak burger. This will be a great time to catch up
with old friends and also to say farewell to me before I leave at the end
of this year. Please pass details on to other Old Boys. I look forward to
seeing you there.
