14 NOVEMBER 2014 No. 35
Dear Parents,
Sandra Hazel, Honorary Oblate, died early on Monday morning. Sandra was well
prepared for her death and accepted her illness with great faith and courage.
Please pray for her, Colin her husband and her family http://www.iona.qld.edu.au/
images/stories/PDF/sandrahazelrip.pdf.
I invite you to pray the Rosary in the College Chapel on Monday 17 November at
6.00 pm and to attend the funeral on Tuesday 18 November in the College Chapel.
The funeral will commence at 1.00 pm.
Fr Paul Siebert O.M.I. is in the Mater Hospital and is in quite poor health.
There are numerous items this week and I have to put aside the third and final instalment on Fr Lewy’s
story until next week.
PRESENTATION EVENING
The Presentation Evening was 2¼ hours of wonderment. It showcased the spirit and joy that both the
staff and students have and celebrated the year that was and recalled who we are and what we could
be. The evening was filled with much joy and laughter. The MC boys were extremely flamboyant and
were a pleasure to listen to; credit to the people who wrote their script! The wedding singer
performance was entertaining. The awards were inspiring and I trust that they bring forth effort and the
ambition for success in all the students who attended.
I congratulate all those who worked to make the night possible, especially Mr David Cockburn, Mr
Darren Harbinson, Mrs Karen Corkeron, Mr Sam Ould, Mr Damian Courtney and Mr Ross King. They
did a terrific job.
I thank those who were able to come and also those who helped by returning tickets for seats that
were not needed. A full list of the major award winners will be in next week’s newsletter.
AND MORNING TEA
Studies with Bishop Elect Mark Edwards
“A New Heart: Life in
Apostolic Community”
MARK EDWARDS BISHOP ELECT
On Friday night at 9.00 pm Brisbane time, it was announced that Pope Francis had appointed me
auxiliary bishop of Melbourne and titular bishop of Garba in Numidia. This has happened very quickly
and I think it has come as a bit of a shock for all of us. The Papal Nuncio (the Pope’s ambassador in
Australia) informed me of this on Saturday 1 November.
The news was embargoed until noon, Friday in Rome. (9.00 pm Brisbane time). When it did come out
and spread rapidly via Facebook, there were those who thought that it was a last day prank by the
Year 12 students and laughed heartily at it.
The Ordination will be held at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne on Wednesday 17 December at 7.30
pm. All are welcome. I hope to be able to be at Iona to the end of the academic year.
This is a dramatic change of ministry for me. However, St Eugene was very clear that serving the
Church was the number one priority for Oblates. When Fr Grandin, later Bishop Grandin the great
Canadian Oblate missionary bishop who is patron of our house of the same name, wrote to St Eugene
asking if it was OK for an Oblate to accept ordination as a bishop, St Eugene replied along the lines of
“I am a bishop and an Oblate – and a very good one. You should accept.” That has been helpful for
me. Being a bishop will be a new way for me to live out my Oblation to God.
I feel sadness as I love this community and really believe in the school and what it does. At other
times, I am excited about the new role. As members of an Oblate community, you and I have the
…/2

FROM THE RECTOR cont...
support and example of the Virgin Mary renowned for her openness to
the will of God and her readiness to accept a mysterious future. I hold
that close at this time.
It is an honour for me to be appointed
bishop but it is also an honour for the
Oblates and for Iona and all our works.
I hope you feel this honour too. As
well, I thank you for the many texts,
emails and calls I have received and
for their support and congratulations.
A highlight for me has been the
blessing prayed over me by Fr Paul
Siebert. As I knelt beside his hospital
bed, he prayed for the gifts of wisdom
and courage for me.
An auxiliary bishop helps out a bishop who has a large diocese. There
are four auxiliaries in Melbourne and each gets a region. I will probably
have the eastern region with approximately seventy parishes and
preparing and celebrating confirmations will be a big part of my work
(perhaps fifty confirmation ceremonies a year) as well as visiting
parishes and supporting and encouraging priests.
The Oblates have made it clear that Iona is a valued and important work
in our Province and that they intend to maintain Oblate leadership at the
College. We are grateful to the Provincial and Council for their care for
us.
EMILIA KEENE
NEITA EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD
We congratulate Emilia Keene on
being the second Iona staff member
to be awarded this excellence in
teaching award after Mr Simmers in
2012.
Mrs Keene loves teaching and loves
teaching at Iona College as
evidenced by the fact that she is still
here at her first placement twelve
years later and that she is still
enthusiastic and excited about her
work here. Ironically, teaching was
her back up at Drama school and
she reluctantly entered her first prac
as a twenty-one year old female at
this all-boys Catholic school. And
she loved it. The atmosphere was challenging, fast paced and
electric. Every lesson was different, every cohort presented with new
hurdles, new joys to share in, new personalities to get to know. She was
posted back to the same school for her following prac placements and
became an official member of the College community six months after
graduating.
Mrs Keene tries really hard to ensure that all of her students feel noticed
and valued as individuals. She enjoys supporting students as they learn
new things, gain confidence and overcome their own personal, social
and academic trials. Their success is her success and their buzz is her
buzz.
Well done, Mrs Keene.
SURF LIFE SAVING QUEENSLAND PRESENTATION
Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Chief Operating Officer Mr George Hill
and Scott L’Barrow .
BR PAUL SHEN O.M.I.
Please pray for Br Paul Shen O.M.I.
who will be ordained as deacon on the
16 November in our Parish of Sha Tin
in Hong Kong. After training as a
diocesan seminarian, Br Paul took
made his Perpetual Oblation on 8
September 2014. He is the first
Chinese born Oblate to make
Perpetual Oblation in forty years.
Br Paul will spend a few months in
Australia in January in 2015 to
familiarize himself with some of the
aspects of our Province before
returning to China to be ordained a
Priest next year.
UPGRADE PATHWAYS
‘Upgrading’ means doing something that will give you a better tertiary
entrance score to help you gain entry into your preferred course, usually
in the following year. Some of these pathways can be built into your
current list of QTAC preferences (e.g. the ‘foot-in-the-door’ courses).
QTAC has a very useful information sheet on upgrading pathways at
http://www.qtac.edu.au/InfoSheets/UpgradingPathways.html.
When choosing an upgrade pathway you need to consider the following:
Does the university to which I wish to gain entry accept this
pathway
Will this pathway give me a good enough score to get into the
course I want
Will this pathway give me credit into the course in which I wish to
gain entry
Does this pathway match my learning style (i.e. will I be successful
in it)
How much does this pathway cost
How long will this pathway take me to upgrade sufficiently to gain
entry to the course I want
Will this pathway give me the prerequisite subjects I need to gain
entry to the course I want if I don’t already have them
Visit pages 27 and 28 of the QTAC Guide for a list of preparatory,
bridging and pathway programs.
THE BENEFITS OF TAKING A GAP YEAR
The following article is adapted from the October 2014 myfuture
news. You can access this newsletter at http://www.myfuture.edu.au/
tools-and-resources/resources-for-career-practitioners/myfuture-news.
With Year 12 students facing final exams all around the country, much
thinking is going into planning the next stage in life. Taking some time
out between school and formal education or work – taking a ‘gap year’
as it’s sometimes known – is becoming increasingly common, with more
school leavers opting to defer their place in tertiary education or
training. If you’re considering a gap year, here are some reasons why it
could be a good idea for you.
If you’re unsure about your future direction, having the time to be
clear on what you want to do can be valuable. This could lead you
to being more focused when going back to study later on.
Using the time during a gap year to get some work experience or
gain skills can stand you in good stead in your future studies and
career.
Volunteering during a gap year can be very satisfying and not only
offers new skills and diverse experiences but also can look good on
your resume and add to your employability.
Many people taking a gap year travel interstate or overseas in order
to volunteer or seek work experience. If this is an option you want to
pursue, remember to stay safe. The Australian Government's
Smartraveller advisory service at http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/
contains valuable advice and information on staying safe overseas.
Taking a gap year is not for everyone, and in order to get the most out of
the experience you need to plan your time well. It is one option among
many, but offers many benefits. For further information and links to
selected programs, click on ‘I’m keen to take a gap year’ on the myfuture
website at http://www.myfuture.edu.au/getting-started/discover-whatcareer-paths-are-available.
BRIDGING COURSES AT THE QUT
One way to meet assumed knowledge requirements is to successfully
complete an approved bridging course in the required subject/s. QUT
offers bridging courses in Chemistry, Physics and Maths B. Maths B
can be undertaken during the Summer Semester starting on 17
November 2014 or during Semester one in 2015. Chemistry is offered
IONA SPORT - A YEAR IN REVIEW
With 2014 Iona Sport drawing to a close, it is worthwhile to reflect
on our directions. Inter-house sport again served the important
purpose of participation and enjoyment. AIC competition was again
enthralling and character building—it was an arena that saw Marist
College Ashgrove dominate, surrounded by Colleges who see the
value in strong sporting programs. There is no doubt that the
improvement exhibited by some Colleges has meant that our
traditional strongholds are now threatened by our opposition. We
will need to improve our sport via resources, coaching, high rates of
participation and continued enjoyment—it is not an easy task but
we will show the necessary “beast” to remain strong. Our 2015
sporting mantra will be “get moving, get coached, get enjoyment”.
We had forty-seven senior sportsmen represent at regional level;
twenty-four at Queensland level and four senior athletes gain
