cultural connections presents
10 scoops at Ertskade
July 19th 2007, Amsterdam
Launch
Design Scoops is a new platform initiated
by Natascha Drabbe. On Saturday 15 and
Sunday 16 September she will present
new work by ten creatives from divergent
creative fields, ranging from architecture
to jewelry and from fashion to food
design. The objects have either not been
publicly presented before or will be on
view in Amsterdam for the first time
during Inside Design.
In January 2007, architectural historian
and design savvy Natascha Drabbe set up
Cultural Connections. It is based in Amsterdam
on Ertskade along the waterfront in the
Eastern Docklands, in a building designed
by architect Hans van Heeswijk.
The mission of Cultural Connections is to
promote and disseminate news, content and
information about the creative industries in
the international media.
As a PR and press communication consultant,
Drabbe is active in the arena of
international architecture and design media.
As an intermediary and facilitator, she also
focuses on special projects involving the
production of printed matters, exhibitions,
cultural events and press communication
in general. She plays an active role in the
international reporting on architecture and
design, thereby aiming to highlight new
talents.
Design Scoops is a new platform geared
towards informing media and design professionals
on the latest developments in
the design field. The keywords in this launch
of Design Scoops are material innovation
and imaginative design. Most products
presented are marked by a textured, structured
and tactile quality, and in most cases
they capitalize on blurring the boundaries
between art, design and architecture.
Following the public presentation on
15 and 16 September, journalists and
design professionals are most welcome
to visit Design Scoops by appointment.
Press Preview
On Tuesday 11 September, between
11 and 12am, you are cordially invited for
a Pecha Kucha Preview. The designers will
be present to provide further information.
design scoops
architect | Janjaap Ruijssenaars
The Floating Bed trifles with gravity through
magnetic rejection. Although the bed seems
to be falling off the earth, four thin cables,
serving as the only contacts with the floor,
keep the object in its place.
visual artist | Jan Ros
The works of Jan Ros generally start from
photography and often feature minimalist
buildings, gas stations, flyovers or apartment
buildings from the 1950s. By drawing horizontal
tracks in the wet paint of his works and by
applying a thick layer of epoxy resin that covers
the paint texture with a mirror-like surface, he
adds several special visual dimensions to them.
industrial designer | Satyendra Pakhalé
The Add-on Radiator can be incorporated in
architecture because it can be built in into
non-structural walls. Its open structure renders
it both transparent and translucent. The Panther
Multi Chair, recently added to the collection of
the Centre Pompidou, can be tilted in various
ways and is intriguing as a sculpture.
industrial designer | Jonas Samson
The high-tech light-emitting wallpaper by Jonas
Samson makes it possible to have light from a
two-dimensional surface rather than a 3D object.
As long as the wallpaper is turned ‘off’, in no way
does it refer to its being a source of light.
Instead, it is just what it appears to be: wallpaper.
food professional | Katja Gruijters
A video clip about the making of Other Lace
leads you through a series of material experiments:
from fabric, concrete and rubber to
various edible materials, thus titillating our
senses. In the end the lace motif appears as
a texture in tiles made of candy, shortbread,
cookies or cookie dough, or different colors
of chocolate.
graphic designer | Hannah Bonjer
Bonjer graduated with honors from Eindhoven
Design Academy with the book 81191918
My document. It is a remarkable investigation
of her many identities, explored in their tiniest
details. She has designed the invitation and
accompanying publication of Design Scoops.
industrial designer | Janne Kyttanen
Freedom of Creation’s latest product is the
Trabecula Tray. A lightweight three-dimensional
structure made with laser sintering technique
and inspired by the bones of birds. In addition
a piece of furniture will be launched that is
especially made for Design and the Elastic Mind,
an exhibition scheduled to open in February 2008
in the MoMA, New York.
interior designer | Odette Ex
Odette Ex is responsible for the spatial design
of Design Scoops. Spatiality and harmony are
essential values in the designs of Ex Interiors.
Sustainable materials are applied to create a
forceful yet sober image. She is also the winner
of the Bouwfonds Award Vitale Monumenten
2007 for Huis de Wiers in Vreeswijk.
fashion designer | Conny Groenewegen
The spring/summer collection 2008, Deliberate
Pixelation, is based on knitwear and plays with
female sensuality, by either showing or hiding
skin surfaces as in lacework. Flexible elastic
yarns, in combination with angora, offer the knitwear
a blouse-like structure and a deluxe look.
textile designer | Aleksandra Gaça
The Architextiles are three-dimensional textile
structures that explore the domain where design,
architecture and autonomous art intersect. The
fabrics are applied in design or architecture as
acoustic paneling or as decorative wall paneling.
Open
5 x building for culture
July 19th 2007, Amsterdam
Sneak Preview
Recently completed and works-inprogress:
a foretaste of new projects by
Hans van Heeswijk architects, known
in Amsterdam from designs such as the
SBS-6 offices, IJ-tram stop Rietlandpark
and the pedestrian bridge of Muziekgebouw
aan ‘t IJ.
De Beyerd Museum for Graphic Design,
Breda
The Netherlands has many museums,
but one for graphic design is lacking. The
renovation of De Beyerd in Breda, including
the adding of a new building, will fill this gap
when it is completed in mid-2008.
Town Hall and Public Library,
Heerhugowaard
The inner city of Heerhugowaard, 30 miles
north of Amsterdam, is undergoing a dramatic
change. Central to its metamorphosis is
a new city plaza right next to the Town Hall,
which dates from 1982. A new wing with
information and social services for the public
in combination with a central hall topped with
a mezzanine offers an inviting public space
and a splendid view of the new inner city.
Hermitage Museum, Amsterdam
The Hermitage Museum has a collection of
three million works of art, many more than
can ever be shown in St. Petersburg. In
the spring of 2009 Amsterdam will open an
annex of the Hermitage that will function not
only as a museum of fine arts, but also as a
center for Russian culture.
Pedestrian Bridge Zouthaven, Amsterdam
The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan
‘t IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the
Amsterdam Eastern Docklands. The nautical
character of the location is enhanced by
connecting the building with the mainland
by a bridge whose design is inspired by a
gangplank.
Cultural Center De Muzerije, Den Bosch
The Muzerije cultural center offers the
residents of Den Bosch courses in fine
arts (painting, sculpture, photography) and
performing arts (dance, ballet, music). A new
glass-covered atrium between two monumental
and landmark buildings provides
a central space where people can gather.
