A Review <strong>of</strong> Some Drugs Mentioned in <strong>the</strong> Texts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islamic</strong><br />

ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص هللا لوسر عم انك‘‏ لاق رباج نع<br />

هبيطأ هنإف هنم دوسألاب مكيلع لاقف ‏,ثابكلا ينجن<br />

We picked <strong>the</strong> Kabath (arak fruit) with prophet when<br />

he told us ‘pick <strong>the</strong> black fruit; it is <strong>the</strong> most delicious’<br />

(Bukhari, Muslim).<br />

ؤُلٱؤُل 22. Luloo<br />

Marwareed, Pearl, (Mytilus margaritiferus)<br />

It is animal origin drug. Pearl mussel has nearly a semi<br />

circular shell, greenish, ornamented with <strong>the</strong> most beautiful<br />

nacre within.<br />

Nature: Cold and dry<br />

Actions: Ash <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pearl (Kushta Marwareed) is used in<br />

heart burn, nervous disease and bilious affection. Pearl is<br />

used as prophylaxis <strong>of</strong> epidemics.<br />

After purification pearl is used as stimulant, tonic, aphrodisiac.<br />

It contains calcium and phosphorus. Unani <strong>for</strong>mulation<br />

is Khameera Marwared.<br />

Text: Luloo is mentioned more than once in Al-Quran.<br />

اَذِإ ‏َنوُدَّلَخُّم ٱٌنٱَدٱلِو ٱمِٱٱيَلَع ‏ُفوُطَيَو<br />

(١٩) اٱًروُثنَّم اٱًؤُلٱؤُل ٱمُٱَتٱبِسَح ٱمُٱَتٱيَأَر<br />

And round about <strong>the</strong>m will (serve) boys <strong>of</strong> everlasting<br />

youth. If you see <strong>the</strong>m, you would think <strong>the</strong>m scattered<br />

pearls. (Al-Quran, 76:19)<br />

(٢٢) ‏ُناَجٱرَمٱلٱَو ‏ُؤُلٱؤُّللٱ اَمُٱٱنِم ‏ُجُرٱخَي<br />

‘From both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ocean, emerge luloo (pearl) and marjan<br />

(coral)’. (Al-Quran, 55:22).<br />

اجرم ن .23 Marjan<br />

Coral, Corallium rubrum<br />

It is also animal origin drug. It acts as cardio tonic, styptic,<br />

general tonic, nerve tonic and expectorant. It is used in<br />

palpitation, restlessness, cardiac weakness, general debility,<br />

cough, hemorrhage, diarrhea and leucorrhea.<br />

Nature: Cold and dry. Marjan contains carbonate, magnesium<br />

and iron.<br />

Unani <strong>for</strong>mulation: Kushta Marjan<br />

Text: Marjan is mentioned more than once in Al-Quran.<br />

(٢٢) ‏ُناَجٱرَمٱلٱَو ‏ُؤُلٱؤُّللٱ اَمُٱٱنِم ‏ُجُرٱخَي<br />

‏َناَك ٱٍسٱأَك نِم ‏َنوُبَرٱشَي ‏َراَرٱبَأٱلٱ ‏َّنِإ<br />

(٥) اًروُفاَٱ اَهُجاَزِم<br />

‘Indeed <strong>the</strong> righteous will drink from a cup whose mixture<br />

is <strong>of</strong> Kafoor’. (Al-Quran, 76:5)<br />

لدرخ 19. Khardal<br />

Mustard (Brassica nigra)<br />

It is largely cultivated n India <strong>for</strong> fixed oil which it yields.<br />

Actions: Externally oil is stimulant and mild counter irritant.<br />

Internally seeds are emetic, useful in febrile cases and<br />

inflammatory swelling, locally applied in sore throat, internal<br />

congestion and rheumatism. It is popular edible oil.<br />

Parts used: seeds, leaves, oil.<br />

Nature: Hot and dry.<br />

Chemical constituent: myrosin, glycoside, sinigrin.<br />

Text: Khardal is described twice in Holy Quran as an example<br />

<strong>for</strong> a tiny thing.<br />

ٱنِّم ٱٍةَّبَح ‏َلاَقٱثِم ‏ُكَت نِإ آَٱَّنِإ ‏َّىَنُبٱَي<br />

‏ِتٱَوٱَمَّسلٱ ىِف ٱوَأ ‏ٍةَرٱخَص ىِف نُكَتَف ٱٍلَدٱرَخ<br />

ٱُهَّللٱ اَٱِب ‏ِتٱأَي ‏ِضٱرَأٱلٱ ىِف ٱوَأ<br />

«O my son! If it be (anything) equal to <strong>the</strong> weight <strong>of</strong> a<br />

grain <strong>of</strong> mustard seed, and though it is in a rock, or in <strong>the</strong><br />

heavens or in <strong>the</strong> earth, Allâh will bring it <strong>for</strong>th. (Al-Quran,<br />

31:16)<br />

متك 20. Katam<br />

Indig<strong>of</strong>era aspalathoides 3,4<br />

Root is chewed as remedy <strong>for</strong> toothache. A preparation<br />

is made from <strong>the</strong> ashes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> burnt plant which is used to<br />

clean dandruff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hair.<br />

Action: Bitter, anti-septic, disinfectant.<br />

she presented us some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prophet’s hair ‏(اهنع هللا يضر)‏<br />

that was colored with henna and متكلاو ءانحلاب بوضخم وه<br />

katam. (Bukhari)<br />

ث ابك .21 Kabath<br />

Arak Tree<br />

Nature: hot and dry.<br />

Kabath is digestive, stomachic, and expectorant, diuretic.<br />

It is useful <strong>for</strong> back pain. It is found in Hijaz region.<br />
