A Review <strong>of</strong> Some Drugs Mentioned in <strong>the</strong> Texts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islamic</strong><br />

watery and sweet. Fruit juice is used to clinch thirst, in affection<br />

<strong>of</strong> urinary organs, fever and hepatic congestion.<br />

Unani <strong>for</strong>mulation: Lauq Aab Tarbuzwala.<br />

Chemical constituent: fixed oil, citrullin.<br />

دمثإ 10. Ethmed<br />

Antimony sulphide<br />

رصبلاولجي هناف دمثالاب مكيلع‘‏ Text: The Prophet said<br />

‘Resort to Ethmed, as it purifies <strong>the</strong> sight ‏‹رعشلا تبنيو<br />

and makes <strong>the</strong> eye lashes grow’ (Ibn-Maja).<br />

Best Ethmed is from Asfahan (Iran)<br />

Nature: Hot and Dry 7<br />

Actions: Detergent and eye tonic, drying agent without any<br />

harm ‏,ففجم healing agent in ulcer and wounds.<br />

بنع 11. Enab<br />

Grape (Vitis vinifera)<br />

Grapes are largely cultivated in India.<br />

Nature: Rind is cold and dry, pulp is hot and moist and<br />

seeds are cold and dry. 7<br />

Actions and uses: It is nutritive, demulcent, refrigerant,<br />

diuretic and cooling. Dried one is laxative, expectorant<br />

and blood purifier. Enab is used as medicament in various<br />

ailments such as in anemia, dyspepsia, dysuria, hemorrhage,<br />

chronic bronchitis, epilepsy and in scorpion<br />

sting.<br />

It contains sugar, gum, citric acid, potassium, sodium,<br />

magnesium, iron, albumin, oil, fat and vitamin P.<br />

Text: Enab is described eleven places in Quran, indicates<br />

its importance.<br />

ةضف 12. Fizzah<br />

Silver, Argentum<br />

A s<strong>of</strong>t white precious univalent metallic element having<br />

<strong>the</strong> highest electrical and <strong>the</strong>rmal conductivity <strong>of</strong> any<br />

metal; occurs in argentite and in free <strong>for</strong>m.<br />

It is included after purification in <strong>the</strong> ointment to cure<br />

scabies, ulcer and wounds. Silver leaves used <strong>for</strong> decoration<br />

<strong>of</strong> dessert.<br />

Silver leaves are Cardio tonic, stomachic, cerebral tonic.<br />

Nature: cold and dry. 7<br />

Unani <strong>for</strong>mulation: Maul-Fizza.<br />

Text: Fizza is mentioned more than once in Holy Quran.<br />

‏ِءآَسِّنلٱ ‏َنِم ‏ِتٱَوَهَّشلٱ ‏ُّبُح ‏ِساَّنلِل ‏َنِّيُز<br />

‏َنِم ‏ِةَرَطنَقُمٱلٱ ‏ِريِطٱَنَقٱلٱَو ‏َنيِنَبٱلٱَو<br />

‏ِةَمَّوَسُمٱلٱ ‏ِلٱيَخٱلٱَو ‏ِةَّضِفٱلٱَو ‏ِبَهَّذلٱ<br />

‏.ٱِثٱرَحٱلٱَو ‏ِمٱَعٱنَأٱلٱَو<br />

‘Beautified <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>the</strong> lust <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y desire<br />

from women and sons, heaped up sums <strong>of</strong> gold and silver,<br />

fine branded horses and cattle, and tilted land’ (Al-Quran,<br />

3:14).<br />

ءادوسلا ةبح .13 Habbat-us-Sauda<br />

Shoneez, Kalonii, Black Cumin, (Nigella sativa)<br />

It is Herb <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean region having pungent<br />

seeds used like those <strong>of</strong> caraway. Nature: hot and dry. 7<br />

Actions and uses: It is anti-inflammatory, carminative, stomachic,<br />

expectorant, emmenogogue, anthalmintic, nervine<br />

tonic, analgesic. It is used in flatulence, dyspepsia, colic<br />

pain, arthritis, paralysis, asthma, and amenorrhea. Useful<br />

in asthma if taken with natrium. 7 Kalonii oil is used in vitiligo,<br />

eczema, pimples and o<strong>the</strong>r skin diseases. It is also useful<br />

in diabetes mellitus. It contains tannin, resin, protein,<br />

volatile oil, gum.<br />

ناف ‏,ءاد وسلا ةبحلا هذهب مكيلع‘‏<br />

‏‹ماسلا الا ءاد لك نم ءافش اهيف<br />

اٱّبَح ‏ُهٱنِم ‏ُجِرٱخُّن اٱًرِضَخ ‏ُهٱنِم اَنٱجَرٱخَأَف<br />

ٱٌناَوٱنِق اَهِعٱلَط نِم ‏ِلٱخَّنلٱ ‏َنِمَو اٱًبِٱاَرَتُّم<br />

‏َنوُتٱيَّزلٱَو ٱٍباَنٱعَأ ٱنِّم ٱٍتٱَّنَجَو ٱٌةَيِناَد<br />

ٱٍهِبٱَشَتُم ‏َرٱيَغَو اٱًهِبَتٱشُم ‏َناَّمُّرلٱَو<br />

We bring <strong>for</strong>th green stalks, from which We bring<br />

<strong>for</strong>th thick clustered grain and out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date¬palm and<br />

its spa<strong>the</strong> come <strong>for</strong>th clusters <strong>of</strong> dates hanging low and<br />

near, and We produce gardens <strong>of</strong> grapevine and olives and<br />

pomegranate, each similar (in kind) yet different (in variety<br />

and taste). (Al-Quran, 6: 99)<br />

Text: The Prophet said<br />

‘Use this Habbatus-Sauda, as it is <strong>the</strong> panacea that cures<br />

all diseases except death’ (Bukhari, Muslim).<br />

Abresham, Silk cocoon (Bombyx mori)<br />

Raw silk cocoon are coverings spun by a group <strong>of</strong> silk<br />

moths during <strong>the</strong>ir metamorphosis.<br />
