Hijamah (Cupping): A Graeco-<strong>Islamic</strong> Perspective Therapy<br />

5. Allama Kabeer-Uddin says that Hijamah at lower extremities,<br />
especially at ankle joints is similar to <strong>the</strong> fasd<br />
(venesection) because normally blood and noxious<br />
matter move in <strong>the</strong> downward direction and hijamah<br />
also attracts <strong>the</strong>m, so when hijamah bil-shurt is indicated<br />
at ankle joints <strong>the</strong> oozing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> blood is higher<br />
than in venesection [7].<br />
Importance <strong>of</strong> Cupping mirrored by<br />
Ahadith-e-Nabvi<br />
Following Ahadith-e-Nabvi from Al-Kitub-al-sittah<br />
(encyclopedia, assemblage <strong>of</strong> six great texts <strong>of</strong> Ahadith-e-<br />
Nabvi i.e. Bukhari Sharif, Muslim Sharif etc.)[8] reflect <strong>the</strong><br />
importance <strong>of</strong> cupping.<br />
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet was cupped while he<br />
was in <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> lhram, and also while he was observing<br />
a fast).<br />

ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet<br />
was cupped while he was fasting.<br />

متنكأ هنع هللا يضر كلام نب سنأ لئس لاق ينانبلا<br />

Narrated Thabit Al-Bunani: Anas bin Malik was asked<br />
whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y disliked <strong>the</strong> cupping <strong>for</strong> a fasting person. He<br />
replied in <strong>the</strong> negative and said, Only if it causes weakness.<br />

هيلع هللا ىلص Narrated by Ibn ‹Abbas: The Prophet<br />
suffer- was cupped on his head <strong>for</strong> an ailment he was ملسو<br />
ing from while he was in a state <strong>of</strong> Ihram. At a water place<br />
called Lahl Jamal.<br />

ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص يبنلا نع امهنع هللا يضر سابع<br />
.طعتساو هرجأ ماجحلا ىطعأو مجتحا<br />
هيلع هللا ىلص Narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet<br />
was cupped and he paid <strong>the</strong> wages to <strong>the</strong> one who had ملسو<br />
cupped him and <strong>the</strong>n took Su›ut (<strong>Medicine</strong> sniffed by nose).<br />
عمس هنأ ةمقلع نع ناميلس ينثدح لاق ليعامسإ انثدح (9<br />
ثدحي ةنيجب نبا هللا دبع عمس هنأ جرعألا نمحرلا دبع<br />
نم لمج يحلب مجتحا ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص هللا لوسر نأ<br />
.هسأر طسو يف مرحم وهو ةكم قيرط<br />
هيلع هللا ىلص Narrated Ibn Buhaina: The Prophet<br />
while in <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Ihram, was cupped at <strong>the</strong> middle ملسو<br />
<strong>of</strong> his head at Liha-Jamal.<br />
ينربخأ لاق بهو نبا ينثدح لاق ديلت نب ديعس انثدح (10<br />
ةداتق نب رمع نب مصاع نأ هثدح اريكب نأ هريغو ورمع<br />
مث عنقملا داع امهنع هللا يضر هللا دبع نب رباج نأ هثدح<br />
ىلص هللا لوسر تعمس ينإف مجتحت ىتح حربأ ال لاق<br />
.ءافش هيف نإ لوقي ملسو هيلع هللا<br />
Narrated by Jabir bin ‘Abdullah: that he paid Al-Muqanna<br />
a visit during his illness and said, I will not leave till he gets<br />
cupped, <strong>for</strong> I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “There is healing<br />
in cupping.<br />

نب ناورم انثدح عينم نب دمحأ انثدح نيسحلا ينثدح (1<br />
نبا نع ريبج نب ديعس نع سطفألا ملاس انثدح عاجش<br />
ةبرش ةثالث يف ءافشلا لاق امهنع هللا يضر سابع<br />
عفر يكلا نع يتمأ ىهنأو ران ةيكو مجحم ةطرشو لسع<br />
نع سابع نبا نع دهاجم نع ثيل نع يمقلا هاورو ثيدحلا<br />
مجحلاو لسعلا يف ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص يبنلا<br />
Narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas هللا يضر :هنع The Prophet<br />
said Healing is in three things: A gulp ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص<br />
<strong>of</strong> honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing). But<br />
I <strong>for</strong>bid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with<br />
fire.<br />

هللا يضر هللا دبع نب رباج تعمس لاق ةداتق نب رمع نب<br />
نإ لوقي ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص يبنلا تعمس لاق امهنع<br />
مكتيودأ نم ءيش يف نوكي وأ مكتيودأ نم ءيش يف ناك<br />
قفاوت رانب ةعذل وأ لسع ةبرشوأ مجحم ةطرش يفف ريخ<br />
.يوتكأ نأ بحأ امو ءادلا<br />
Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah: I heard <strong>the</strong> Prophet<br />
saying, «If <strong>the</strong>re is any healing in your medicines, <strong>the</strong>n it is<br />
in cupping, a gulp <strong>of</strong> honey or branding with fire (cauterization)<br />
that suits <strong>the</strong> ailment, but I don›t like to be (cauterized)<br />
branded with fire”.<br />

ماجحلا رجأ نع لئس هنأ هنع هللا يضر سنأ نع ليوطلا<br />
وبأ همجح ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص هللا لوسر مجتحا لاقف<br />
.هنع اوففخف هيلاوم ملكو ماعط نم نيعاص هاطعأو ةبيط<br />
Narrated Anas bin Malik: When Abu Taiba cupped <strong>the</strong><br />
Prophet and <strong>the</strong> Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ordered that<br />
he be paid one or two Sas <strong>of</strong> foodstuff and he interceded<br />
with his masters to reduce his taxes.<br />
